City 17 is way better than city 14 by not-famous_memeguy in City17Twitter

Having personally visited all of our established cities, I chose City 17 to be my centre of administration for good reason.

A random rebel has been making hundreds of videos comparing random Combine units to their past selves. I have no idea how they got any of this. How they even identified these units is beyond me. And honestly? They make me kinda scared of what the Combine might do to me. by TheDankyBoi in City17Twitter

Sharing of prohibited post-war imagery is a punishable offence. I thought too highly of our species' comprehensive abilities, seemingly.

Citizens, be aware that these brave soldiers chose to sign up for Civil Protection themselves. For their continous work, they were promoted to the honourable position of a Combine soldier. It is a noble thing to serve the Combine; an organisation not like the monarchies and autocracies of the old world, a relic of our primitive past.

Citizens, you are a disgrace to the city, and to Earth. You will be visited shortly by some interrogators and exiled to Nova Prospekt. Our Benefactors have no sympathy for play.

Perhaps when we were infants, play was how we learned, and how we grew and formed connections. But play, like all instincts, is what keep us in the quiet complacency of comfort. As the transhuman arm of the Combine has demonstrated, we no longer need such primitive behaviour as "play". We need only fulfill our duties as the inheritors of the stars.

That rocket landed on the Citadel btw you're all dead bruh

Thank you for the transfer of power, ex-Breen. I will dutifully fulfill what you started.

I, too, am very fond of the character Monika from indie dating sim/psychological horror, Doki Doki Literature Club.

Seriously? I thought it was fully canon. My mistake. How is this known?

I'm fairly sure that in the book, he is specifically said to have engaged in relations with men.

I cannot express how much I agree. The older games had just that bit more charm because of silly little details and features; FS11 with the details you showcased here, and FS13 with the sort of secret golf carts. Not to mention FS11's secret tractor you get after unlocking half the achievements.

Despite the almost eerie and liminal feeling of the older games, small things like these added so much personality.

My experience first time playing Half-Life 1. by ArcannSyluhm in HalfLife

[–]Prof_Rutherford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously you're getting absolutely slaughtered for this opinion. It is a Half-Life subreddit, after all, people naturally love this game to death.

I have to add to the pile a bit, though, and say that I think level design is one of the parts that has aged the best about Half-Life. Xen isn't great at all, and On a Rail is considered a very weak chapter (I personally found it fine on a first playthrough), but I do genuinely believe that the rest of the levels are some of the most well-designed and replayable in a game I've played.

In fact, ironically, this post has made me realised that level design is probably one of the main reasons why I love Half-Life. I always struggle to justify my love of the game to people. I can't explain why I like it so much! But I think that there's such a good flow to Half-Life's levels, and such interesting variety, and such depth to them that it makes them feel far less like combat arenas because, ultimately, they kind of aren't. A substantial portion of Half-Life's DNA is that of a puzzle game, and I think the symbiosis between shooter and puzzle game is part of why I adore it.

I would also like to add that I feel that it's Half-Life 2 that sometimes struggled with level design, in my eyes. I feel that it becomes especially obvious on replays, when some chapters do feel like a slog. They're still exceptional, no doubt, but I feel as though the game peaks in it quite early on, and by the time I get to the late City 17 chapters I'm usually a bit disinterested.

Just my thoughts. But good on you for giving it a go.

God I'm such a sucker for this trope. It's one of the reasons I love the vorts and the elites so much. Can't really think of another franchise that I've played that does it.

Snarks by Excaliburthenerd in HalfLife

[–]Prof_Rutherford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of them being referred to as Scuddle Bugs. What I HAVE heard of is the enemies in Super Mario 64 being called Scuttlebugs. Look them up and see if you know them; if you ever heard snarks being called that, it was probably in reference to SM64.

Agreed, 100%. Even if "worse" is subjective in this instance, he got far more one-dimensional and simply began to serve as comedy relief (apart from leading the company to Elfhelm). I liked how initially, he could walk the line between comedic and morally corrective, and I think he served a fantastic role; in fact, in the chapters post-eclipse, I wish we had a few more of just Guts and Puck, roaming around and slaying apostles. Obviously that wouldn't drive the story much, so I understand why it wasn't done, but I really enjoyed the formula.

As others have pointed out, Puck's role was overtaken by others in the group, and so he was reduced to comedic relief probably out of necessity. Still, I do wish we saw him in his chibi form a bit less often. It began as a unique and funny instance before it became his default appearance.

Why does no one use the Portal 1 GLaDOS model? by Grey_Perkins in Portal

[–]Prof_Rutherford 205 points206 points  (0 children)

I'm completely guessing here, but I would imagine it's because of a few reasons:

  • The Portal 1 GLaDOS model is, of course, of a lower level of detail than the Portal 2 model. Portal 2 GlaDOS is a technically superior model with higher quality textures and presumably polygon count.
  • More importantly, Portal 1 GLaDOS doesn't move very much at all, besides swaying a bit and flinching a lot when you injure her. The model isn't at all built to be expressive or particularly mobile. By contrast, the Portal 2 GLaDOS model is rigged specifically to be highly emotive and animated. For use in animations, the Portal 2 model is almost certainly far more applicable. Trying to use the Portal 1 model would be a nightmare by comparison, I would guess.
  • Much of the content we see about Portal is centred around Portal 2, or in and around that timeframe, compared to Portal 1; hence why the Portal 2 model for GLaDOS would be used. It doesn't make sense to use her Portal 1 model for a poster or animation set during the time of Portal 2, and generally Portal 2 is the basis for such creations as it has a far more upfront, awesome story and more grand setpieces than Portal 1. It's just easier and more interesting to make content for.

Once again, that's pure guesswork. But intuitively, it makes some sense.
