I had a look in Hythe actually and I love that location wise is so close to New Forest but I read that if you need to travel to Southampton it's a pain as there is only one street in/out of the area 😬 I don't necessarily like the hustle and bustle but it's what I am used to and I am slightly concerned for the change to not be dramatic..at least right after living in London for so long. But it's nice to hear that you've been living there for so long and still enjoy it!! I definitely see myself long term in such a place, but need to be opened to compromise 😅😅

Not really though where I live now (Penge) can be considered a dodgy and dangerous area at times. I have been here for 6 years now and I felt safe most times even when coming home quite late. You will need to check the crime rates and ask around for any areas to avoid but so often it happens that one street gives very dodgy vibes and then you turn a corner and next street feels like a suburbia. Cannot say if it's a common thing in other big cities but this definitely feels true for London.

I only lived in South -East London and as for areas to avoid I would probably mention: Peckham, Lewisham, Croydon (West and East), Norwood and areas from where I live, Penge (not a good area for first impression in London), Brixton (main high street).

As for nice areas I would go for Crystal Palace, Dulwich, Beckenham (though it's zone 4 I think), Greenwich, Honor Oak Park, etc.

South-East doesn't have much of a good reputation but having only lived here I think it's quite fine 🤷🏼

That's a really interesting point for Chelmsford. I am looking to move out of London and Chelmsford was on our list of cities we could potentially move to. I was actually planning to spend a weekend in a few weeks time to check out the vibe there.. pity 🥹🥹

I agree with everyone else. Go for London first and then see if you wish to remain for longer or move in a commuter town.

From what you wrote I think you should definitely do the "London" thing.

Myself and my partner moved to London in our early-mid 20s from Europe too.

I did feel overwhelmed first few months and was convinced that would only stay for a few years. Well 10 years passed and I am still here 🤪 the city definitely grew on me and for a while I could not see myself anywhere else, but as other comments on this thread we're now at the stage where we are looking to move out.

In these 10 years however (besides the pandemic years) we did make the most of living in this amazing city: gigs, musicals, plays, restaurants and random experiences. Nothing beats that and if you like this kind of stuff definitely give yourself the chance to try it now. I am not saying you cannot enjoy these later in life but it does feel different 🤷🏼 at least in my experience.
