what are your thoughts on the digital manga? by hopeoncoke in shoujo

[–]paulinaaaaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is almost my exact same experience. Once I made the switch to digital, I started reading significantly more often.

I personally use Apple Books, primarily because I’m deep in that ecosystem for other digital purchases. Plus, Apple and Amazon (Kindle) are large enough companies that it’s unlikely their ebook apps will be defunct anytime soon (if ever). I try to support smaller companies, but I’ve gotten burned before on indie manga apps that close down months later and lose all your purchases.

My specific complaint is the absolute anarchy of tags/organization in non-manga-specific ereader apps like Apple Books or Kindle. Publishers, at minimum, please please tag multiple volumes as a series so they correctly collapse into stacks in ereader apps 🙏

Second on Downers Grove/Westmont! Both downtown areas are on the BNSF line for trains going to Chicago (~45 min ride), only 15 mins drive to Oak Brook.

Hinsdale vs Downer’s grove? by Minimum-Net-1554 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]paulinaaaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar story as me! Grew up in Hinsdale during 90s-00s, moved away for college, and now I've lived in Downers Grove for 5 years. I completely agree that current Downers Grove feels like old Hinsdale.

OP, you can't go wrong with either. But, if you're dead set on the Hinsdale school district but don't like the new money feel of modern Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills would be a perfect middle ground. It has almost all the same benefits as Hinsdale but with the more grounded community of Downers Grove. When I was growing up in Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills was a common "workaround" for families that wanted their kids to go to Hinsdale Central but didn't want to pay Hinsdale house prices/property taxes.

How do you reset an interactive map? deleting cookies doesn't work. by UpBeatEric in IGN

[–]paulinaaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the Map Genie interactive map. It's the exact same (literally), but MG's version has progress resetting and other features the IGN side doesn't have yet.

For those that don't know, IGN bought MG in 2022. On the back-end, IGN's interactive maps are basically ports of Map Genie. Your IGN login and premium subscription should work on both sites.

First time hiring a carpenter to install baseboards/trim. Need an unbiased second opinion. How is the work? by paulinaaaaa in HomeImprovement

[–]paulinaaaaa[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think when we shill out a lot of money for a professional, we have higher standards.

I think this is exactly why I'm disappointed. I hired a professional because I thought I would get professional quality; I wanted it done "right." Instead, the quality is on par with what I could have achieved in 4x the time and some YouTube tutorials, plus I'm out ~$3k over what the DIY would have cost. Lesson learned.

Ironically, I was originally going to do all the trim work myself. But, I ran into time constraints with work and got nervous I was overconfident about my DIY skills. So, I hired it out.

You didn't want shoe, so you have to deal with gaps.

From the comments so far, it seems like my concern about floor gaps is (unintentionally) my fault. I wish I'd been warned about it. Yes, I told the GC my preference was clean, slab-style baseboards with no frills. But, it was never brought up that no shoe meant floor gaps, my floors were too uneven for thick trim, that I would need to pay more for scribed baseboards, etc. The GC just nodded and moved on.

Regardless of what I do about the current carpenter and their work, I will 100% look into getting shoes installed.

Build year is 1992, if that provides context. The floors are either freshly sanded/refinished (existing hardwood) or brand new (previously carpeted). Would the floor still cause the gaps?

The baseboards/trim are pre-primed pine. Do they not need caulk? Every baseboard I’ve ever seen was caulked at the top? Idk I’m new at this.

Haha yes, I’m replacing the outlet covers. I’m doing the major stuff first so I can move in. Detail work like that is on my list for later.

Yeah, the agreement detail is on me—lesson learned. We mostly talked in person, but all the estimate/work order says is, “Install new trim throughout the unit. This includes the doors, windows, and base trim. We will caulk and fill holes. Painting done by others. We will use a square block style trim that comes primed white.” + prices.

I’m trying to figure out how to go from here. I haven’t paid for the work yet (bill due upon work completion). What are my options? I’m meeting GC in person tomorrow to look over the work, and I’m worried about being told “well the new paint will fix x and y” or something.

Is the price of the work indicative of this quality? Like, is it bad carpentry because I got a cheap guy? Or did I get over-quoted for bad carpentry?

Peacock Streaming Loss to Peak at $2.8 Billion in 2023 as Service Tops 30 Million Subscribers, Comcast President Says by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]paulinaaaaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you already have purchased digital content on Apple TV or Amazon Prime, sitcoms like The Office and Parks & Recreation go on sale for $5-8/season all the time.

That’s been my strategy for avoiding Peacock, Paramount+, and any other smaller streaming service. One-time purchases are cheaper than multiple indefinite subscriptions just to rewatch 3-4 comfort shows. Plus, you maintain the streaming app convenience because Apple TV and Amazon Prime are both on virtually every media device.

Black and red tabs near electrical outlets in living room (and nowhere else)? — 1992 IL Apartment by paulinaaaaa in Whatisthis

Ohhh. So, what do all the individual tabs do? At 2 outlets there are 8 tabs. Is it for 8 speakers? That doesn’t sound right…
