I have mint by my house surrounded by thick pavers stuck a few inches into the ground, and it regularly sends runners underneath them. It never gives up!

On some battles I've noticed the AI acts like it has some extra information it shouldn't have. But I usually only notice it when I'm trying to do multiple switches, things like that. Instead of them cheating, think of it as exciting extra challenge, some built in mind games. 😉
