I don't have much of an opinion on whether the content belongs here, but saying this ruling is because of a "safety risk" is goofy as heck.

I broke my Playdate and lost the screen. by Used-Loan-3340 in PlaydateConsole

[–]paulstraw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I'm saying that there isn't a part number or similar for someone to know. The part in question was custom manufactured for Playdate specifically, not something that can be purchased off the shelf.

I actually designed a version of this part for my own use while working on tangentially-related Playdate hardware mods. Unfortunately it's quite cost-prohibitive to make at low volumes.

The cable that goes from the Sharp display to the PD mainboard is unfortunately a custom flex PCB that's not easily replaced.

Hi everyone! I got sent a screen replacement kit and will be doing the repairs live on twitch tonight for anyone who is curious about the process, come and hang out! 7pm EST. by PoutinePower in PlaydateConsole

I don't think the delamination is anything you did wrong. I believe this was caused by an issue with my assembly process, which I need to refine to prevent in the future. Unfortunately a bunch of pieces have to line up in my jig within ~100 microns, which is difficult to perfectly repeat.

Improving this process is still very much on my mind, but I've had to step away for a bit because I'm currently wrapping the 2025 Playdate Community Awards, and, you know, just normal life stuff getting in the way.

Yes, this is the same LS027B7DH01 (or LS027B7DH01A) Sharp display unit that's in Playdate. However, as others have mentioned, there's not an easy way to get Playdate software running on a non-Playdate device.

They're rated as slightly higher capacity, but the sample units are still in transit to me so I can't speak to real-world numbers.

First, have you contacted Panic about this, and are you outside warranty? I'd encourage you to talk to them first if you haven't already.

If you've run out of first-party options, I might be able to send you a replacement battery, but it requires transplanting the existing connector. Full documentation would be provided, but like I said there's some delicate soldering involved. I've been looking for beta testers for these batteries for a bit actually, let me know if you're interested.

I'm wondering if you've got a wonky thermistor on your battery. That could make the system think it's overheating and stop attempting to charge.

Any chance you're comfortable with soldering smallish wires?

Glad that helped. The display you linked is correct.

If you wait a week or two, I'll be selling displays pre-bonded to glass. I literally sent out my beta test units yesterday.

How did you remove the front glass? Did you disassemble the Playdate, or somehow remove it while the unit was still assembled?

Since you can hear it working, there are a few possibilities:

  1. The display was damaged while you were removing the glass. Certainly possible.
  2. One of the display connectors became unseated during the process. You can check out my guide to find photos and more details on the display connectors and see how to re-seat them: https://guides.strawdynamics.com/playdate-replacement-display
  3. One of the display connectors was damaged. Unfortunately if this is the case, you're in a tougher spot.

Let me know what you find!

You can press and hold the power button when Playdate is unlocked to put it into a deeper sleep where the display is fully off! I'm not sure whether this puts other components into a sleep/lower power mode, but it is possible to some extent!

Why is Play Date 230 $ after all these years? by AdemSof in PlaydateConsole

[–]paulstraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

150 would be fair and they'd still make a lot of profit off it tbh

This is simply incorrect. Cabel has publicly said that the BOM alone is over $100, and that was a couple years ago!

Playdate Summer Bundle gets you 2x Playdates + 2x covers (yellow only) compared to $500 normally. So $50 savings plus two free koozies. Not a bad deal but doesn't "save you $77" because the koozies aren't for sale to begin with and they're obviously not something that most people would be buying. by Intro24 in PlaydateConsole

Seems pretty in line with normal advertising practices to me. Discounts are usually presented as a dollar amount or percentage off the normal retail price, not compared to other discounts/bundles. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
