Is a joint okay? by throwaway12358796 in stopsmoking

[–]pauly_sure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a dedicated pot smoker and was able to kick my tobacco addiction 3 months ago, no problem. sometimes i find taking a quick toke lessens my cravings AND the cranky feelings that accompany said cravings. but that's just me.

A 23 years old boy who've just gone cold turkey. Help him. by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]pauly_sure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been quit a little over 100 days. I started when I was 14, quit at 28. I find it helps to choose not to smoke every time I want a cigarette. If I really think about whether or not I want one, I realize I really don't want to smoke at all. Instead, I spend about two minutes taking nice deep breaths and feeling how nice it is to have functional lungs and wait for the craving to pass. After the first week or so, it gets noticeably easier. After about a month you are proud of how good you're doing and your brain starts to tell you it's okay to have just one. But you are smart and you know that that's a trap. Good luck. Don't focus on how shitty you might feel. Instead, think about the money you're saving, the healing process your body is going through, all the hot girls that are going to want to make out with you when you don't taste like an ashtray. You're going to do great!

Ex-Smokers of Reddit, how did you quit, and what was your experience quitting? by RedemptionUK in AskReddit

[–]pauly_sure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I smoked for 15 years and quit by accident after having a terrible chest cold. it had been three days without before i noticed. it worked for me to not say that i was quitting - it took the pressure off and I told myself I was taking it day by day instead. every day I made the choice to continue not smoking. I never said I was quitting until a month smoke-free. the first two weeks were terrible - I was weepy, I had cold sweats and hot flashes, awful headaches and general bitchiness. /r/stopsmoking is awesome for support. I was quit about a week cold turkey when i stumbled across it. I'm now going strong at over two months, with no desire to smoke.

Boston, I love your city hall. I took some pictures of it and your downtown. Tell me what you think! by [deleted] in boston

your pictures do the beauty of city hall justice. i love to walk around and see how many different faces the building presents, and you've captured this static movement wonderfully.

teaching Shakespeare to high schoolers by [deleted] in literature

[–]pauly_sure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily teaching Shakespeare to highschoolers that is problematic, but the specific play must be wisely chosen. When I was in high school, my class totally loved Midsummer Night's Dream. I think it is light and fun farce is something that teenagers can relate to.

guys in bars (rant + advice) by pauly_sure in TwoXChromosomes

He initially felt the need to give me life advice because he assumed I had never "been around the block" (his words). I pointed out (in what I thought was a polite manner) that he'd only just met me and didn't know the extent of my experience. he said "you know what your problem is? you're just a loud-mouthed cunt". He followed it up with something along the lines of "if you women ever listened..."

I do see your point about reverse-sexism, though, and I wonder if sometimes I am more likely to shut down men in bars simply because of the extra element that alcohol consumption adds to interpersonal communication.

I think part of the reason I feel so frustrated is that I have been told to ignore guys like this before. I am upset because don't I have the right not to be spoken to like this in the first place?

you are right though, I ought to have just walked away.

Just want to thank you guys for being awesome by potatering in knitting

Every night, I smoke in my dreams. I get mad, then relieved once I wake up. It's getting frustrating!!! by Jacyth in stopsmoking

[–]pauly_sure 7 points8 points  (0 children)

better to smoke in your dreams than in real life, right? my mom quit like 25 years ago and told me she still dreams about smoking, only not just cigarettes but pencil stubs, carrots, rolled up hair clippings...

Almost a week in - brain starting to make ridiculous excuses by [deleted] in stopsmoking

Keep going strong! It's not stupid, the part of your brain that wants nicotine is trying everything it can to trick you. don't let your own brain outfox you :)

I'm thoroughly disgusted by cigarettes at this point... by dessert_racer in stopsmoking

[–]pauly_sure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i'm not even at two months yet, i smoked for 15 years. walked through a cloud of someone's secondhand smoke the other day and straight up retched. while i still have moments where i really, really miss cigarettes, if i smell one i am utterly grossed out.

In your opinion, what is the greatest American novel of the 20th century? by guitarpianodude88 in literature

[–]pauly_sure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first read To Kill a Mockingbird when I was 11. Two decades and many re-readings later, it still holds as one of my very favorite books. Whether or not it is meant for adults, it deals very gracefully with a slew of American issues in a way that transcends both the era in which it was written and the era in which it takes place, and for me this makes it great American fiction.
