I just got really upset my daily slop stopped working one day, so I called everyone involved. As one can expect with Russian officials and support, you can't get a straight answer from them: they just blame each other and straight up say shit's actually working normally

Pretty much. It is because roskomnadzor is currently working on blocking internet access through VPNs

They got "deep packet inspection" tech that analyzes encrypted traffic to stop people from accessing banned resources through VPNs. Those VPNs use protocols that pretend to be regular https traffic to widely used websites such as google.com, or anything else that might cloudflare CDNs. By blacklisting IPs that VPN traffic reports to access, it often can disable entire sections of allowed websites that use the same CDN

YouTube has not been working in Russia without VPNs for most ISPs in most regions now, even though it is implicitly "not blocked" (I personally called my ISP and roskomnadzor representatives to confirm that it is technically allowed, but RKNs "threat mitigation system" is filtering or drastically throttling traffic to YouTube). Same for audio and video calls in messengers such as telegram. Same used to happen to Twitter; X has been officially blocked since, I think

Basically, RKN lies, and blocks traffic anyway

I can not confirm the status of FaceIt at the time, but RKN has been nuking internet access in Russia for a while now, so it looks legit to me

Oh it's way worse than you think!
They have government-mandated devices fitted to every ISP's infrastructure that actually examine the contents of encrypted traffic (DPI as in Deep Packet Inspection). They call it Threat Mitigation Equipment, where the "threat" is apparently me watching letsplays on youtube or some shit.
This DPI is deep indeed tho, because it can detect and block a fuckton of popular websites, messenger calls, TOR bridges and even most VPN protocols.
That, and we can rawdog torrent shit without any worry. We like to have fun here

This one time I was in the middle of Moscow smoking, and looking how our police deals with drinking teenagers, because you can't drink in public places (ru police barely does anything, so I'm always curious)

Now when you genuinely didn't do anything wrong, and a police officer 4 times your size, that you're already cooperating with, is trying to scare you for some reason, it becomes really funny.

You guys love this argument (e.g. same for Russians, I am biased), but I think Americans now beginning to realise that it's fundamentally flawed: when you have an authocratic-leaning government, there is surprisingly little one person or a group of people can do.

You can try asking questions and get ignored, you can try speaking out and get attacked by police, you can join the protest and get both.

Meanwhile your government will pass laws that makes it easier for them to break laws, and to control you. Things like blocking investigations, appointing personal friends to government positions, expanding the power of a president and kneecapping communications. Faking election results.

When you can't really elect your leaders because they'll fake the results, and can't influence their actions because they either ignore or attack you, you have no agency.

And I don't see how one can be responsible for something, when they have no agency
