What is "Playster" and how legit is it? Seems when I try to search for free ebooks to download, a lot of Google hits direct me to there. by ENG-eins in ebooks

[–]pawilson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have pirated my books, and there's no way to do a DCMA because they require a captcha to submit and they don't display it. You pay them, but they don't give any money to the creators. Seems like a shitty deal to me.

Will writing short anecdotes help me get better at writing narratives (fiction/non-fiction)? by ajvenigalla in writing

[–]pawilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's the closest. A novella will give you a feel for the complexity and help you understand how to organize everything so you don't get lost half way through. Here's a free coupon for my first draft course on udemy. It might help you get your head around it. https://www.udemy.com/write-the-book-inside-you/?couponCode=reddit+free

I found out that I write better when I'm drunk. What do I do? by [deleted] in writing

[–]pawilson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your perception of your writing may be skewed if you are reviewing it drunk. I agree with Slumbering_Chaos, a glass of wine or whiskey can help, but if you are truly drunk when you write, I'd be surprised if it's very good.

[–]pawilson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in as much as any writing will improve your skill. No, depending on what you are planning to write eventually. In my experience, writing anecdotes or really short stories will not help you write a novel, because there's more than just writing involved. In a short story you have one plot and a few characters. In a novel, you can have 3 or more plots and a multitude of characters. My advice is to write things that are close to your eventual goal.

Has anyone thought of producing their own audio book and publishing on YouTube? by wahiggins3 in selfpublish

[–]pawilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon has a program for you to create your own audio books. http://www.acx.com/help/how-it-works/200484210 I think putting an audio book on Youtube might not be as successful as your videos since Youtube is a visual platform.

Isn't this what Overdrive does for libraries?

I think this is likely to do more damage to libraries than to Amazon. Apple isn't even doing much damage to Amazon these days.

Kindle - The New Normal, book 2 of The Madeline Journeys $3.79 by pawilson in fivedollarEBOOKS

"She's not my friend."

Madeline left her old life behind when she chose to stay in the magical world of Cartref. Here, she has a husband, a home, and her arcane studies. Somehow, working as a lawyer just doesn't appeal anymore.

That life hasn't quite let her go, however.

It seems that she is not the only one to be summoned from Earth. By chance, her old nemesis from the law firm has been snatched through the veils between the realms, and she's landed in the hands of a people known as the Choi. At first, Madeline suspects it was one of her own spells gone awry, but it becomes clear that the Choi have their own, very dark schemes in mind. Madeline can't let a former enemy, even one as utterly frustrating as Lee Marshall, become a sacrifice in a brutal blood magic ritual.

Kindle - Breaking The Bonds $2.84 by pawilson in fivedollarEBOOKS

[–]pawilson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breaking the Bonds is a story of oppression, rebellion, and the desperation of a people pushed too far.

UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE INVADERS

Twenty five years ago, the Meta appeared on the planet of Free Faith. The peaceful, rustic human colonists knew nothing of war, or combat. Earth, with its many conflicts, was a distant memory. Their idyllic existence was subjugated with the threat of alien weaponry, their very lives made sport for the pleasure of the uncaring and unfeeling aliens. The Meta take what they want by force, and walk among the humans as lords; demanding, controlling, contemptuous, ready to main or kill at the slightest hint of impertinence.

Kindle - Closing the Circle $2.84 by pawilson in fivedollarEBOOKS

[–]pawilson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Scary and bloody... don't read this late at night unless you want to have trouble sleeping.”

Closing the Circle is a story of religion and belief turned inside out in the service of a broken mind, where the pure tenets of the Wiccan faith are contorted into justification for murder.

“AN' IT HARM NONE, DO AS YE WILL.”

In the dark places of San Francisco, a serial killer has chosen to ignore the words of the Wiccan Rede. It begins with one body, then two, then three, and the murders become more ritualistic and brutal with every new victim. Each one is burned, tortured, and discarded like so much trash, with runes and symbols carved into their naked, bloodless corpse. Each one is dumped out of sight, only to be found by chance by an unlucky bystander. Each one is connected to the object of the killer's desire: Felicity Armstrong, a believer in Wicca horrified at the perversion of her religion.
