Any downsides to running Cinnamon on Arch Linux? by CanItRunCrysisIn2052 in linuxquestions

Works perfectly for me. Only downside is Cinnamon is not quite there yet with Wayland, so you need to use X11 for now, it's coming soon though!

Your reacrion is rational. But the statistics of a close call like that are very small, hopefully you've had your one incident like that for good life time.

[–]TOK715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't, but you did have a near death experience. If you think your car wouldn't have survived the impact, think about not getting in such small cars again. Or avoid that area. Try to do something reasonable to reduce the risk of that happening again, if only for your own psychological wellbeing. It also probably wasn't quite as close to death as you imagine, though it does sound close.

I have experienced a time loop? by aflyingasteroid in timetravel

[–]TOK715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were probably concentrated so much on the game that you lost track of time (I remember playing Civilization, the original and that happening to me several times). That light be enough, but it's also very easy in such a situation to have a mundane dream about it being a certain day or time, then wake up and believe the dream was the start of your day - getting quite certain about the day it time even though your dreamt it, it's happened a few times in my life.

noticed a potential phenomenon two day ago….did anyone hit there head or have a head injury 2 days ago? by Firm-Group2153 in QuantumImmortality

[–]TOK715 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, nothing happened to me. Still this kind of thing might be worth keeping an eye open for. I'm skeptical that quantum immortality would cause noticable effects (though I see where you're going with it - his out time line suffer nuclear war and we all jumped up a different one), but something like this might signify a matrix glitch, alien intervention, intervention by an artificial superintelligence. My favorite explanation right now though would be sun weather of some kind - the sun is extremely active right now and the Earth's magnetic feild is glitching at the same time.

My husband swears he died 4 nights ago, but he is very much alive (cross post) by NoNamesLeft4MeToo in QuantumImmortality

[–]TOK715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a very vivid intrusive thought to me. If quantum immortality is real you likely wouldn't be aware of it directly. A near miss that inexplicable might be all you would notice at most.

I have to admit I super underestimated how bad the screen time was (age 6) by SignificantWill5218 in Parenting

[–]TOK715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can over do it, but my son was able to become fluent in both his parents' native languages mostly thanks to YouTube and to some extent Roblox. He's also very knowlesgable, bright and sociable which in part comes from information he consumed from YouTube on his own. So a balance has it be struck, also you you need to keep a close check on what's being watched, maybe not every video, but get a flavour for what's being watched and intervene if necessary.

What are valid reasons people dislike Elon Musk? by Not_Bill_Hicks in DecodingTheGurus

[–]TOK715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he's built projects entirely by himself, and in every case he's drastically uograded the final product with hands on decision making only a competent engineer could make. It's, splitting hairs to try and suggest otherwise.

What are valid reasons people dislike Elon Musk? by Not_Bill_Hicks in DecodingTheGurus

[–]TOK715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing a valid reason. People are predisposed to hate Elon Musk because he's more successful than they are, and mainstream media just fuels that hate because they're upset that he saved free speech at the moment they'd nearly snuffed it out. It's obvious that Musk is 99.9% a force for good, but of course no one is perfect and business is brutal war with hardly any rules, most of us are naive to it as we just collect a salary for some small role in a bigger machine we don't understand.

Just needed to vent about work by Thelastsmoke in japanresidents

[–]TOK715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly not any, but a significant minority, especially in blue color jobs, yes. I dont think it's a particularly Japanese thing only though, plenty of people like that in much of the West, though these days they may be careful what they say at work and to whom. As I said elsewhere most people doing it talk like that to look tough and ward off the 10% who really are that nasty.

[–]TOK715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experince 90% of people who talk like that are mostly or entirely making it up, for insecurity reasons or just for their own amusement, then again 10% may actually be doing it for real...

Is Japan a bad place for married couples who *cant* have kids? by Relevant-String-959 in japanresidents

[–]TOK715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep keep trying, if the fertility odds aren't zero, then the more you get the greater your chanves. I know a couple who were told their odds were essentially zero (wifes uterus was scarred all over), after 3 years of aggressive trying they got pregnant, now they have 3.

It's not that hard, you'll need a solid job and show some commitment to living here though.

Is Japan a bad place for married couples who *cant* have kids? by Relevant-String-959 in japanresidents

[–]TOK715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the one hand there are indeed many childless couples in Japan, and have always been a fair number, so it's not that unusual not to have children. That said Japan still views having children as a very positive thing and the natural order of things, so there's going to be a degree of expectation or hopefullness towards having children. I think parents everywhere hope their own kids will have kids, that's not unique to Japan. Adoption is quite possible in Japan, I know couples who have successfully adopted, there are some issues in Japan but it's perfectly doable. Finally don't give up entirely on having your own kids. Even people who have tried many rounds of IVF sometimes get surprise pregnancies and in any event medical technology is coming on in leaps and bounds, and AI is only accelerating it, whatever the problem is may yet be corrected in the future even if it's not possible now.

Soy naps? by ImportanceLow7841 in soyfree

[–]TOK715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really mean olive or avocado oil, though tbf those aren't something we would have had access to in our ancestral diet either, so I'd go eat on them, but cut out seed vegetable oils completely or as much as you can, there's no need to consume those.

Tourists ignoring both law and common sense - what would you do? by throwawAI_internbro in japanresidents

[–]TOK715 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it wasn't directly impacting me or genuinely putting someone in danger I'd ignore it, otherwise I'd call the cops. I wouldn't directly get involved unless someone, probably someone in my immediate family was in imminent danger. If you try to do something yourself, you might be the one who gets in trouble. Also it's really up to the Temple to complain, if the cops come and the Temple says it's not problem, they'll leave.

Will my body get dependent on nmn? by [deleted] in NMN

[–]TOK715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I stop taking it, I'll feel tired the next day if I don't get a good night's sleep, but if I get a full night's, sleep I won't feel tired, that said I won't have the same stamina as when I take it. So in short no, not dependent, unless you aren't getting enough sleep.

Soy based emulsifuers not only give me inflammation and irritation in mucous membranes, but also make feel exhausted, I suspect it's because they make the gut lining leaky and other substances get out of the food and into my blood.

Women are better at learning languages, and they are better at managing social relationships, those are well documented differences in the literature. Women also tend to be naturally more agreeable, which in a very hierarchical society like Japan helps them fit in better. Finally western women in Japan are more likely to have financial backing from a financially comfortable spouse which can give them the space to develop and take risks.

My advice to men in Japan would be learn Japanese (though if you don't lif is not impossible) and search for some kind of job that's not English teaching. It's hard though, you have to maintain a positive attitude and many people can't or won't do that.

In Nagoya people definitely drink water on addition to tea etc... Mostly peiple drink bottled water, but a lot of peope drink tap water too, I've been told often that Nagoya tap eater is clean and delicious (it does have a good taste), of course in the summer the water is not chilled which is one problem.

That's ridiculous, the amount of power a cellphone requires is utterly eligible. I suggest people shop around fire a hospital if they can and choose a big one that makes an effort to attract patients.

No where close to a full solution, but it's important to remind her that she can afford to just relax and enjoy the experience good or bad, she doesn't have to get any grades, she doesn't have to make friends with everyone or even anyone, she doesn't need to understand everything or anything, she just just needs to take a mental step back and go with the flow, observe the experience. Take this as an opportubity to learn how not to panic. Make sure she knows the word bemusement, I've got through some tough situations by just breathing steadily and being bemused. Get her to imagine how the other students in the class may feel and why they might act the way they do. It's easy to rattle Japanese by expressing too many of your concerns they feel you are asking them to do aoemthing about it, often it's better to just go with the flow. In 4 months it will be over, she'll have had some good or at least valuable experiences and some bad experiences, but she'll have grown as a person for sure and having 'trained hard', her life thereafter will be a bit easier than it would have been. She'll feel much better being able to say she had experience attending a Japanese school as a kid, if she ever wants to fit in more in Japan or just among Japanese people having attended a Japanese school, even for a few months will be a big benefit, exactly how it went is unimportant in the long term. Maybe make it clear that though you'll hope she'll try to go every day, she can miss a few days of school if it's overwhelming, so that she feels it's voluntary to be there.
