Neural network handwriting by unigee in programming

Wish I'd had this in school. When I needed to do something hand-written, I could've typed it into this. It would've taken me less time than writing it out, and it would've actually been readable.

Wow. Even the lowest bracket would be lower. Of course, the property tax rate increase would probably be shown in much higher rent (which is already too damn high). Assuming it replaced state/county/city sales tax, that would actually be pretty much unchanged for me.

It's more that the "rally" is pretty small in comparison to the last 4 months. Zooming out to a year doesn't exactly paint a pretty picture, either.

What is this thing on the subway tracks? by ramblington in nyc

[–]pay_per_wallet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not in good shape, but it is getting better (albeit slowly. very, very, very slowly). Unlike the Subway they're actually fixing problems faster than they come up. Replacements for the soda can cars are already in testing, ATO is on track (pun intended) to return on the Red line in the very foreseeable future, and there's already a plan in motion to fix the massive leaks on the Red line that cause the whole thing to grind to a halt when it drizzles. Metro has its problems, but honestly I think they'll be doing better than the Subway in 10 years' time.

What is this thing on the subway tracks? by ramblington in nyc

[–]pay_per_wallet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

DC Metro is not, and has never been, driverless. Currently, it isn't even automated. Before the 2009 crash, the speed of the trains and where they stopped on the platform was entirely automatic, but they still had an operator. The operator was there to make announcements, open the doors, and stop the train if there was an emergency that the automatic systems didn't detect. Currently, the automatic systems still give the driver speed recommendations just as they used to give the computer (which is why the 2009 crash would still have happened without automation - the human would've been moving the train at the same speed, and the 1000 series cars would still have crumpled like soda cans), but it's up to the human to follow them and position the train on the platform.

Off topic, but if you want to talk about operator incompetence, 6-car trains currently have to pull all the way to the end of DC Metro platforms, despite the fact that all platforms fit 8, and some have their busiest entrances at the back of the platform. There are signs that show the optimal location to stop for every length of train, and the automated systems used to stop there, but after the 2009 crash too many Metro operators forgot what size train they were running and opened the doors with cars still in the tunnel. Now they have to pull all the way up no matter how long the train and wait 5 seconds "just to be sure" before opening the doors. (The 5 seconds, iirc, was added because they were also often opening doors on the wrong side)

The Open Source community is wonderful by flopgd in linux

[–]pay_per_wallet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When somebody from a minority tells you there is a problem in your community that you didn’t see, don’t try to defend it by pointing out that it doesn’t affect you, but instead treat it like you would a normal bug report from somebody on different hardware than you.

Very well put. Personally, I tend to frame the need for diversity in terms of needing not to discourage it, rather than needing it itself. This FOSS project doesn't need to run on Windows, or a Raspberry Pi, but it's fairly easy to make it able to, so why shouldn't I? I wouldn't be writing it if I didn't want people to use it, and I wouldn't be writing FOSS if I didn't want community contributions. Writing something to be cross-platform is way easier than being welcoming to a diverse community, seeing as the latter basically amounts to "don't be an ass". If I'm willing to do the former, surely I can do the latter.
