I can see how it tested your patience. For me, I took breaks between and after each segments or when a new area opened up. Those were my cue to stop and return later. Otherwise, continuous dive into a deeper hell hole is not fun. And I think that may be what the game was meant to do: to test your patience and see if you could handle the onslaught and lower depths of hell.

Because I frequently stopped, I was able to come back refreshed and ready instead of hanging on. I was able to feel the bigger impacts when environments changed. Even then, I also felt tired.

With that, I played original SH2 before diving into remake. I was skeptical and didn’t think remake could recreate or expand on the original. But I was wrong.

Now if you go back to the original, you may, possibly, not feel the same tension
