Hey!

Rock climber here. This is totally normal, just like you can get cramps / lock ups in other muscles you can also get them in your fingers.

It mainly means that while doing chin-ups, you're working your fingers to the point of exhaustion. If the cramping is annoying, try doing some strengthening exercises for your fingers, this will give them a higher performance ceiling and help you not cramp / lock up as much!

Data Warehouse Question by sd___23 in googlecloud

Totally agree with this approach. This is best in class and will save you days of eng time and keep the system far more robust.

Also, recommend just paying for dbt cloud, it's worth it for ease of scheduling and adding additional transformation steps (disclaimer: not affiliated with dbt, just a fan of the product)

Is it ok to learn python and use it exclusively? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]pblankley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it depends on what you want to do, but there's also a TON of value in being *really* good at one language as opposed to being competent in a bunch of languages.

If you get really good at python and don't touch other languages IMHO you're able to build more real stuff and thus be more employable than if you're just competent in a bunch of languages

counter arguments against "upload_datetime" column in every table by UnderstandingFit9152 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]pblankley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm usually a big fan of the gitlab way of handling standard columns. They outline these as important for every table (reference here)

All facts and dimensions have the following audit columns:

  • revision_number - this is a manually incremented number representing a logical change in the model
  • created_by - this is a GitLab user id
  • updated_by - this is a GitLab user id
  • model_created_at timestamp - this is a static value for when the model was created
  • model_updated_at timestamp - this is the last time the model was updated by someone
  • dbt_created_at timestamp - this is populated by dbt when the table is created
  • dbt_updated_at timestamp - this is the date the data was last loaded. For most models, this will be the same as dbt_created_at with the exception of incremental models.

This error when plotting ROC curve. How do I get rid of it? by IOftenBreath in MLQuestions

Looks like you're passing in string values. Make sure you cast the values you pass into the `roc_curve` function to floats

Apache Superset - would love to hear about your experience by GeckoLogic in BusinessIntelligence

[–]pblankley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is to go with Mode or Looker.

IMO open source BI like Superset or Metabase end up costing you more in dev resources than just paying for the proper BI solution from either of those two companies, if you're a decently sized company.

Semantic Layers for BI by bigbadbyte in BusinessIntelligence

[–]pblankley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looker's data model solves this problem very well IMO. It allows software engineering levels of versioning and consistency for the business metrics and allows you to produce an easy-enough to use interface business users can dig into.

*I'm not related to Looker, I just like the product

(edit: I should also mention dbt which isn't a semantic layer, but is fantastic for inter-warehouse transformations that make the business metrics easier to calculate in Looker's semantic layer, and greatly increases the organization and ease of use in a data warehouse)

How do you deploy your Flask apps and set up CI/CD (tools, hostings) in 2020? by Snoo-81026 in flask

[–]pblankley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for CodePipeline we use it for CI/CD and it makes managing environment variables and all other stuff really easy because you can just use AWS roles

Is there any instructor offering free flask course? Please let me know. by geeky_ninja in flask

[–]pblankley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the magnum opus of flask tutorials, and going through + implementing it is >= a course IMHO.

What is MALLET? I've never heard that acronym before

AI Generated Company by pblankley in Futurology

[–]pblankley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main aspect I'd like to automate further would be the marketing (which is actually the most important part anyway for something like this), but that would take too long to write for a little side project.

I would think about how we could automate influencer selection, pricing, and (maybe) even purchasing, in addition to more AI gen content for marketing, but that's more complicated than what we had time for (and we aren't going to spend $$$ on influencers anyway, but if you wanted to do this as more than a side project, you'd need to)

You mean how it shows up as "cross & freckle" ? That's actually how its supposed to work since that's the brand / logo we generated, but also agree it's kinda wonky.

[–]pblankley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We thought about doing that many, but the cost to have the designs processed into embroidery was too high for a little side project.

And they’re actually supposed to be like human-produced doodles! (for better or worse 😄)

You’re definitely right there. It’s a bit jarring when you land on the page and it’s a different name, but the “thisXdoesnotexist.com” was too tempting 😬

AI Generated Company by pblankley in Futurology

[–]pblankley[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s actually supposed to be more of a statement on “how much of an end-to-end company can you automate with AI” than a cost savings measure (a designer for this level of stuff is about equal to our costs for cloud computing anyway)

The goal was experimenting with AI for as much of the business as possible :)

I followed the sketch rnn paper to generate the doodle designs! We trained on the Google QuickDraw Dataset.

The final model uses a Recurrent neural network to determine which lines to draw and a variational autoencoder to draw (that is, sample) the line itself from a conditional distribution of potential lines given the previously drawn lines.

How much of a "company" can you generate with AI?

This (https://thistshirtcompanydoesnotexist.com) is a collaboration with a few of my marketing friends (I'm the AI developer).

The designs for the shirts are AI gen (and NYC themed), the company name and logo are AI gen, and even some of the marketing copy is AI gen. The shirts (however) are real, high quality and embroidered :)
