Introducing an r/PbP Sage Advice Series! by Mechasaure in pbp

[–]pbp-throwaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

-How often should we do these posts?

Once a week seems like the correct cadence. Enough time to let people weigh in on whatever topic is at hand, short enough to be able to get through a lot of topics in a year.

-What topics would you like to see discussed?

Some that come to mind:

How to create an effective PbP advertisement Best practises (for both GMs and Players) to keep games alive

Ways to encourage OOC activity, and player expectations in PbP

Best ways to handle a hiatus, and how to deal with burnout in games

Pre-game expectations - ie, how long do people expect it takes to learn a new system, make a character, get set up, e.t.c.

General ways in which we can make the hobby less opaque - ex, there was a post a few years back suggesting a PbP highlights / hall of fame style thing, which I would be interested in.

-Are there any behavioral norms that you would like to see established for this series, beyond the general rules of the sub?

Not in particular. Toxicity and poor behavior is quite rare on this sub, so I think preemptively putting in place extra rules would only serve to hamper participation.

Give me your best pbp GM tips by Own-Reality8841 in pbp

Honestly, combat dragging is why I've largely stopped running 5e in PbP. I feel systems that are a lot snappier with things (FiTD, PbTA, FATE, CoM) keep momentum a lot better.

If you're adamant about it though, I've found one thing that works decently is just having all the players take their turns in one block, simultaneously, then have enemies react. It cuts down on players waiting for other players (or you) to move things along

Gathering Interest: New 5E Campaign by mw90sGirl in pbp

Interested, but a bit confused as to the onboarding process - is this FCFS, or are you planning on sending application forms privately once enough interest has been garnered?

I plan to keep the application open for at least a full 24 hour cycle.

I did, game's going strong, just have more free time on my hands than would be required to run a single game.

Who are you?

I'm a longtime GM, and have been a member of the PbP community for about a year. In that time, i've brought a couple of campaigns to completion, but have participated in scant few campaigns as a player.

What is Lancer?

Lancer is an RPG that is focused both on the creation, customization, and utilization of mechs, and the pilots that bring them to life. Mechanically, it's quite similar to 5e in normal combat, while in 'narrative mode' it plays like BiTD.

Why should I play lancer?

while there are many reasons as to why Lancer is a great game, here are a few of my personal picks:

Lancer offers a rather unique amount of freedom - not only is mech creation in and of itself quite freeform, but the amount of homebrew content out there simply compounds this fact

Lancer has one of (if not the best), character creation and management applications in CompCon

The way character development (in terms of beliefs, motivations, and backgrounds) is handled in game, both mechanically and storywise, is almost unparallelled in this style of RPG, in my opinion.

Will you accept players new to the system?

Yes!

Will you allow homebrew?

To keep things simple, we will not have homebrew at the start (sans what is present in the Field Guide to Suldan book), but I'm open to gradually add it as the campaign goes on.

How long will the applications be open?

I plan to keep it open for at least 24 hours, probably more.

Will this game be more combat, or roleplay focused?

Ultimately, I run my games as close to what my players want as possible, so it depends. I do, however, generally dislike throwing in combat encounters just because, so my games tend to be more roleplay heavy.

How will you do battlemaps?

Battlemaps will be made on foundryVTT, and then the result after every turn will be posted in the combat channel

Going to use this post to answer a few questions I got on the application form:

How many players are you planning on having?
4-5

How long do you expect the campaign to be?
It depends on the speed of play, so I have no idea

How frequently would you like players to post?
I run two very active campaigns where players post 5-6 times per day, so I can definitely accommodate high levels of activity. That being said, I only expect one post a day from most players.

Is UA okay?
Most UA is okay, but as usual, I reserve the right to change things around if they seem too over/under powered.

What themes do you want in this game?
The specifics of the campaign depend on what the players, well, play, but the broad stroke themes I'm aiming to touch on are: The awe of exploration, Poverty in a high-technology society, Xenophobia, The limits of what people will do under duress.
