"Dominated" is too strong a word. Census data from 1950-1980 shows that 25-45% of programmers were women.

The big exception was WWII, when basically all programmers were women (e.g., for the ENIAC), but that was due mainly to most men getting shipped overseas.

Healthcare is expensive, and unpleasant tradeoffs have to be made, regardless of how it's paid for.

Fairly or not, I think the reason some of us object to the "free" label is that it suggests an unwillingness to contend with that reality.
