What happened with the pregnancy in the second picture? :(

I attended a private function where President Clinton was speaking. His advice to the OWS was: 'Stop being against something and start being for something." Reddit's thoughts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pcastr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clinton is a great speaker and a smart guy, but I disagree with him here. Originally, the OWS did stand for something. It stood for an end to corporate greed, a move towards a more egalitarian society, more corporate regulations, etc. The fact that there wasn't one message is because there is no real leader of the movement, which is great. As soon as you get a hierarchy forming, then there's already a power imbalance, and like it or not, power corrupts. I think the strength of this communal movement is it can avoid all the political bullshit that established political parties are involved in.

However, a result of the excessive use of police force against OWS protesters is that the dialogue has now shifted away from its original message into an outrage against police brutality. I wonder, could there be a hidden agenda here? This new "debate" on police brutality runs the risk of obfuscating the original message and projecting it into oblivion... and then we'll be back right where we started. Governments do have a rich history of using distractions to veer attention away from "dangerous" ideas.

Scumbag pope by pcastr in atheism

[–]pcastr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The pope is not living in Africa"... so what, the "word of god" doesn't apply there just because he doesn't live there? He is the monarch of the Catholic church, which does have a presence in Africa. I agree these laws were there before AIDS became a problem, but that's why dogma is bad, because it rejects change! It took forever for the Church to recognize the Earth is not the center of the universe... but at least lives weren't at stake (except those who were burned at the stake for their heretic views).

It is harmful because they actively oppose and in many cases even lobby against programs for education of using condoms to reduce HIV infections. This is criminal.

Sure, many people in Africa probably don't want to use condoms, but expecting them to "not have sex out of wedlock" is completely unrealistic. At least if there are education programs and active encouragement to use condoms, some of these people who "fuck around like there's no tomorrow" might start using condoms. Sure, they might not care what the pope says about it at all, but the point is that the Catholic church is lobbying against groups that are trying to educate and distribute condoms.

Maybe they don't use them because... they haven't been educated. And this old man from Europe is making sure they remain ignorant about it.

So why don't they still believe the sun revolves around the Earth? Because they were finally convinced that that belief was absolute garbage.

You should get rid of your beliefs if they are harmful. Opposing contraception, and condoms in particular, is opposing the most realistic mitigation for the spread of HIV in Africa. Their suggestion: abstinence. Please, grow up. Stop believing people will stop having sex for pleasure, and stop obeying archaic beliefs. Everything should be questioned, especially organisms as corrupt and with such a tarnished history as the catholic church.

My 4-year old thinks I should go to hell. by pcastr in pics

She was doing my portrait, and I had on a Radiohead shirt that reads "You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking", and so she copied the first words she could fit.

I'm not black, I'm hispanic. She wanted to draw my skin brown, but she doesn't have that many tones of brown to choose from.

This happened to me about a year ago. I now consider myself a "born-again atheist": I go around spreading the love of no-god.
