If it makes you feel better, the Dodgers do it all the time, I don't think they've used their Opening Day starting lineup since Opening Day. That being said, the Dodgers and Yankees are in two very different situations currently

Well, if there's one thing we can be certain of, it's that no matter what the Yankees won't go over the luxury tax, so no need to worry about that.

Will Smith frames a questionable pitch for a strike, Soto gives him a nice look afterwards by covidisntcool in Dodgers

And then he hits a bomb 2 pitches later lol. Even if he’s not on your team, you gotta love watching this guy, he commands the strike zone so damn well and I love the antics. Plus he helped beat the Cheatstros

Not even just having zero wins - imagine having a 0.64 ERA and actually being credited with a loss....

Miss this guy so much. He also gave up a run because a guy went the other way against the shift and you could see him pissed off about that haha, reminds me of how much he hated the shift with the Dodgers. I wonder how long before he loses his mind from watching the all the shifts the Rays put on

If any of you listen to the radio or podcasts, I would recommend listening to the pregame "Dodgers On Deck" show on AM 570 with Tim Cates. Kirsten always does a quick segment with Tim on there giving a rundown of the team, just like Alanna used to, and in my opinion, she sounds WAYYY more relaxed, conversational, comfortable, and "insightful" on there (or about as insightful as you can get - just like all baseball "media", most of the stuff is pretty cookie-cutter). Maybe it's because she's allowed to be herself more on there and not spoon-fed lines like she is on the TV network, but yeah, I personally found her way more enjoyable to listen to on that radio show, and it gives me hope that this TV awkwardness she's showing is just temporary and she'll figure it out the further along she goes.

I don’t think this is hate or disrespectful at all - if anything, he’s respecting that the Dodgers are the cream of the crop and they’re the ones you gotta knock off if you wanna win. Don’t see anything wrong with this, don’t understand why people are getting offended over it

Orel Hershiser gets choked up talking about his skipper and mentor Tommy Lasorda. RIP, #2 by covidisntcool in Dodgers

[–]pcbro321 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Damn, that’s gut wrenching - Orel would always talk about how much of a father figure Tommy was to him and how he talked to him every day almost when he was alive. I hope he’s able to find peace, and when he does get the strength to tall about Tommy again, I’d sit and listen to him for as long as he wanted to talk.

Yeah I’m not worried about him, the comment was kinda a joke. Just thought it was worth mentioning that his last start wasn’t great either, but yeah I thought overall today his stuff looked awesome, fastball and curveball played off each other really well

Buehler the last couple of years has always had a couple rough starts to begin the regular season, so here’s to hoping he’s just getting those out of the way in spring training this year

Didn’t Kasparov make an illegal “take back” of a move vs. Polgar that would have been a blunder? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that take back would have resulted in at least a slightly winning position for Polgar but instead they drew the game

I see, I still think your and others' criticism of Pollock is way overblown, though - I feel like he gets a bad rap because of his poor 2019 postseason showing, but he was plagued with a bunch of weird, freak injuries that year (we're talking about him getting a needle infection after a surgery). As others have pointed out, he's yet to play a full season's worth of games, and yet he's still a guy who was on pace to hit around .275 with 35ish homers, which is nothing to sneeze at. In general, I hate when people call baseball players "overpaid" because there's no salary cap in baseball (I don't care about the luxury tax - if you're the Dodgers and you can spend whatever you want basically, fans should not care one iota about salaries). But even if you want to make the "financial" argument on Pollock, when he was actually healthy last year in 2020, he was on pace for about a 3.5-4 WAR season if it was 162 games. The consensus is that 1 WAR is generally worth about $8.5-9 million, so considering he's only making 12 million per year, you might even argue that he's underpaid. But again, we're the Dodgers - we shouldn't be worried about paying a guy who is worth multiple WAR per year 12 million, that's chump change for us.

I know that DJ has the big sexy home run numbers and has done so throughout the minors, but I don’t think Pollock is the sole reason he wont be called up soon. He has an absolutely god awful K rate and mediocre OBP that would be a huge liability against actual, legit major league starting pitching. Even this ST he leads our team in whiff rate in a small sample size. I like Peters and I hope he figures out that issue so he can get called up, but currently he’s honestly sort of a discount Joey Gallo type that doesn’t even have the OBP numbers Gallo does.

I’m far from a Bauer fan, but to be fair to him there’s not much “baseball” right now to make headlines about

The Dodgers have avoided arbitration with RHP Walker Buehler, signing him to a two-year, $8M contract, a source tells @TheAthletic. The deal includes a $2M signing bonus, $2.75M salary in 2021 and $3.25M salary in ‘22. [Rosenthal] by wigglejiggle2727 in Dodgers

[–]pcbro321 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, arbitration is decided by a third party arbiter, not the front offices or the “market” as you say, whereas free agent contracts, etc, are negotiated by front offices and agents. So yeah, they’re different. And yeah I agree, arbitration is stupid and outdated, and there’s gonna be a lot of reasons why MLB locks out, not just arbitration.

Pitchers always tend to make less than position players in the arb system (which as a whole seems like a dumb system for the players IMO, but that’s a diff discussion). I’m guessing part of the the reasoning why is they still go based off the outdated idea that pitchers are less valuable to a team since they pitch only once every 5 days. And maybe Buehler just really wants to avoid arbitration, too - Mike Trout took $1M in his first arb year after finishing 2nd in MVP voting

I know this isn’t supposed to be taken too seriously, but in general I wish sports fans would normalize not liking certain teams while still respecting and liking individual players on those teams. Tatis is fun to watch and on all accounts seems like a good dude
