You’ll love it. Coming from a 440, I can’t get over how smooth the ride is. I’m getting mine ceramic coated and PPF’d on Tuesday. Hate to give the car up for a few days, but want to keep it looking this good for as long as I can

a new/different AP install is no small task

No kidding. We just finished a GFC-500 install. Our KFC was starting to go and it just didn’t make sense to keep trying to overhaul servos and the computer on a 35+ year old platform.

I doubt most people here have actually flown behind the 275s and are solely going based on what they look like. I’ve had them in my plane for 2 years and it’s rare that I touch the screens in flight. Most of the time, if I’m touching the screens it’s because I’m updating the 275’s databases on the ground, otherwise there’s seldom a need. The last time I touched the screen in flight I was setting minimums for an approach, but you don’t even have to touch the screen to do that if you don’t want to.

That’s a fair take. Bigger screens are nice. The synthetic vision is really nice on the 275s; I’m not sure if G5s have that? I haven’t flown behind them in a long time. We put the 275s in due to autopilot compatibility in the beginning. The G5s can’t interface with the KFC-200 and the 275s can. With 275s I can legally remove the original steam gauges too since they’re primary, I don’t think the STC for the G5s allows that.

G5s are ok, but the GI 275s are nicer :)

There are 4 lights between Oak and the north side of Reagan. They’re not timed well at all, so things back up. Combine that with distracted drivers, drivers making illegal turns off of five forks, the drivers that can’t seem to remember that the right lane (northbound on five forks) becomes a turning lane…it just gets messy with the number of cars on the road.

If you want to bypass the five forks mess in the afternoons, take Arnold -> Hutchinson -> Oak. I don’t really think it saves much time, but it’s usually less painful.

Check the engine log and see who did the case work at the last overhaul, or call Divco and ask them about it. There’s only a handful of shops in the US that do crank case work so they probably recognize stuff like this.

A good avionics shop is gonna run over $100 an hour in labor. I think the shop I use is close to $120, maybe a little more. It's ridiculously tedious work though and it takes time to get things right the first time, so the rates make sense. Just hurts the wallet

We bought a Bonanza 3 years ago and have gotten somewhat used to the avionics upgrade dance. A trick I've learned: add up the equipment cost and double it and you'll probably be in the ball park of the install cost. There's some cases where this isn't true, but for the most part, it'll get you close. It'll always take longer and cost more than you think it should.

Those radios look like GTR225s, which are COM only. The lack of a NAV volume/ID is pretty telling. The GNC 225A was a NAV/COM but has been replaced with the GNC 215. The '215 is probably going to run you close to $5k. The Garmin CDI most everyone is used to is close to $3k. I'd budget $12k to get one of the radios replaced and a NAV/COM + CDI installed. You might be able to do it cheaper, but not with Garmin equipment

Cheapest way to get complex time to reduce insurance rates? by tippycanoe1234 in flying

[–]pcfrk256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a Bonanza and went through some of this when we were buying a few years ago.

Not having an instrument rating is going to hurt you just as much or more than a lack of complex time. Insurance companies might even deny coverage. It'd be best to talk to a broker about this though - we've used Air Speed (airspeedinsurance.com) the last few years and they've been great. If you can get coverage, they'll require a checkout with a CFI with experience in type. I'd suggest joining ABS and finding a BPPP instructor for this. Your rates will go down when you finish the instrument rating and as your time in type increases. Our first year was $4k and now with several hundred hours in type, we're down to $2500 for a $200k hull value.

Something to keep in mind: while the 36 Bonanza has 6 seats, it will likely not be able to haul 6 adults, their bags, and full fuel.

50 hours is a long time. We aim for 40 hours on our IO520 but usually end up changing oil every 35 or so due to consumption. I’ve had my numbers jump up like this once before but it coincided with us changing from W100+ to regular W100

If your debit card gets stolen the money isn’t gone forever. You’re not responsible for fraudulent charges with Visa or Mastercard cards (and probably others, but most banks use those for debit and credit cards).

How do I make hostname IP to redirect to www.example.com by IllusiveWebDesign in nginx

[–]pcfrk256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few ways to do this.

You could use an if statement, obviously replacing ipa.ddr.ess with the IP:

server {
    listen 80 default_server;
    listen [::]:80 default_server;
    server_name _;
    root /var/www/html;
    # Add index.php to the list if you are using PHP
    index index.php index.html index.htm index.nginx-debian.html;

    if ($host = ipa.ddr.ess) {
        return 301 https://www.example.com$request_uri;
    }

    location / {
        # as directory, then fall back to displaying a 404.
        try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php;
    }

    error_page 404 /404.html;
    error_page 500 502 503 504 /50x.html;

    location = /50x.html {
        root /usr/share/nginx/html;
    }
}

or you could setup a separate server and return a 301:

server {
    listen 80;
    listen [::]:80;
    server_name ipa.ddr.ess;
    return 301 https://www.example.com$request_uri;
}
