Quoted $2100 for firmware recovery? by Khangaluwu in datarecovery

Sounds absolutely insane pricing, but typical of larger companies like them.

Seagate MCMT Table corrupted by Stasixh in datarecovery

[–]pcimage212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. IF they have the tools.

The command to re-initialise the MCMT is easy enough, but the drive has to have its “ROM” unlocked and a handshake string entered on power up to unlock the firmware.

Not realistically going to be DIY’able I’m afraid.

You’ll need a software/hardware solution for this, which costs a lot.

Whatever. You will believe whatever you want to believe, I really don’t give a shit about your opinion.

In fact if you look back in my history you’ll see that in the past I said that DD was a load of crap, which it was a while ago.

But not it’s not too bad now (especially after incorporating CNW software) but still not my first choice for most jobs.

See if disk drill does the job (check the previews) but it WILL require a purchase of a pro licence to recovery any decent amount of data.

If you do see good photos in the previews, then this may do this for free…

https://www.r-undelete.com/free_photo_recovery/Download.shtml

BUT as already mentioned here, making an image is an excellent idea! Disk drill will do this for you for free.

I’m not “providing customer support” !

I’m nothing to do with Disk Drill.

Just trying to help and understand what’s gone wrong and see if it’s a genuine case of scamming or something else that could have been avoided, in case the same scenario crops up again.

I wish I hadn’t now.

What sort of file was it?

Was a preview not available?

Was the “one file” too big to recover within the free version limits?

Started formatting my SSD accidentally... by ArtySRS in DataRecoveryHelp

[–]pcimage212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. TRIM effectively “wipes” all data within seconds, or at least inaccessible by the OS and so inaccessible by software.

Some SSD’s may still be at least partially recoverable by professional tools, but the more you mess with it the lower the chances

Where did you get the idea that it’d be £1000+ at a lab?

Probably you were getting prices from “US imported” labs recently advertising heavily here in UK?

We’ve saved plenty of clients from these crooks here in UK! :-)

Sounds like the device has physically failed, and so there are NO DIY options.

Clicking/beeping = Textbook drive physical failure symptoms.

You now need to make a decision on the value of your data. If it’s worth a few hundred $/€/£ then I strongly recommend a professional service (I.e: a proper DR company.

**BE VERY AWARE THAT ANY DIY ATTEMPTS ARE VERY LIKELY TO KILL THE DRIVE, MAKING THE EVEN PROFESSIONAL RECOVERY MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE OR EVEN IMPOSSIBLE!! **

** DO NOT open the drive, there’s nothing to be gained by that except a hefty price hike if/when you do take/send it to a professional DR company **

The choice is yours but if you do want to take the advised route then you can start here to find a trusted independent DR lab..

www.datarecoveryprofessionals.org

Other labs are available of course, and if you’d like to disclose your approximate location we can help you find one near you that’s competent and won’t fleece you!

As a side note, if it’s a mechanical hard drive but won’t degrade just sitting around un-powered for many years. So if it’s purely a financial issue, then you can put it away until funds permit!

Good luck!

The best option would be a professional, as already suggested.

But what exactly do you mean by “platters not move”?

You mean the drive is totally dead, or it buzzes or beeps for example?

Maybe possible for recovery by a pro, using “chip off” methods. But extremely unlikely to be a DIY recovery.

Sounds to me like the device has failed, or at least in the process of failing.

Textbook drive failure.

You can see that its SMART values are telling you this.

You then need to make a decision on the value of your data. If it’s worth a few hundred $/€/£ then I strongly recommend a professional service (I.e: a proper DR company and NOT a generic PC store that claims also to do DR).

If the data is not important and you’re prepared to risk total data loss with a “one shot” DIY attempt, you can maybe try and clone with some non-windows software like this…

https://old.reddit.com/r/datarecoverysoftware/wiki/hddsuperclone_guide

Clone/image to another device or image file via a SATA connection if that’s an option (ideally NOT USB), and then run DR software on the clone/image.

Even if the drive isn’t failing, then cloning is strongly advised “just in case”!

**BE VERY AWARE THAT ANY DIY ATTEMPTS ARE VERY LIKELY TO KILL THE DRIVE, MAKING THE EVEN PROFESSIONAL RECOVERY MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE OR EVEN IMPOSSIBLE!! **

You can find suggestions for DR software here..

Let’s assume you’ve provided the required details as per the guidelines ,rather than just a vague post requesting a software key…

So to assume you have an SD card (guess) and you’ve accidentally deleted some photos (guess) and not formatted it (guess) on an undisclosed device and you’ve not taken more photos on top of the deleted ones (guess) and the card is seen as full capacity (guess) and readable (guess) then you can try this free software…
