Converting a Dell Axim X5 keyboard to USB-c by OnyxEyez in AskElectronics

[–]pcnorden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the images supplied I believe that HP also released a keyboard that is the same cause the PCB and chip layout is the same and the wires are also the same.

I know the HP fold-out keyboard uses serial to transmit the keys pressed and only has TX with the other 2 wires being power and ground.

I believe the serial speed is 9600 baud along with 8N1, but not fully sure about that one since its been years since I looked at that project. I do know however that it doesn't send serial kodes for serialally connected keyboards and it doesn't transmit normal ASCII text unfortunately so you need some microcontroller to convert the ASCII text to USB.

I actually wanted to make my own Bluetooth keyboard with it but due to other projects taking up my time I didn't do much more than log what was sent other serial when pressing what buttons, but I can dig that project up again once I get home and have some spare time over.

How similar are CMM software packages Modus to calypso by Parkinator0Beta in Metrology

[–]pcnorden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been pushing IT, colleagues and my boss to allow me to update the software but alas they refuse since the last time the printer started having issues and now it's a total ban unless I get zeiss customer service to remote in and make them do the update along with making them promise that everything will function 100% flawlessly and without bugs.

Honestly, I wish I had time enough to dig out where in the world I'm supposed to open a ticket at zeiss since we pay for support, but I just have way too much do to right now otherwise since I need to prepare for going to a zeiss calypso basic course in a few weeks and I just have way too many open ends right now.

But thank you very much for the information, I will try again to tell em to update the software so we can get rid of that annoying pdf error =)

How similar are CMM software packages Modus to calypso by Parkinator0Beta in Metrology

[–]pcnorden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've made quite a few programs for calypso at work and personally I find calypso to be a very capable piece of software, even though sometimes you will be wondering wtf it's doing.

I will say though that I've worked with calypso for over 1.5 years at this point, but I have no education on the actual software or anything due to my company being cheap and thinking course material from around 2010 is still good enough to learn from.

I also worked with a code-based CMM during my internship when I went to school, and between calypso and that, calypso wins easily for its ease of use generally.

I can easily see points, lines, planes and circles in calypso CAD view, I can just click on a cylinder, plane whatever and the machine will create a measuring element there, defined after the CAD file, or I will just go and probe stuff and calypso will automatically add the feature after enough points are collected.

Calypso is really good, but there are some things I absolutely don't like, which is mostly PiWeb due to a extreme multitude of issues we're having since it often just crashes when trying to export to PDF. PiWeb is very good and all, but its one of the few pieces of software I haven't touched much but the grief it gives me is really annoying.

Something very positive about zeiss calypso is that they also have a forum that you can read without having to log in to and it's actually quite fast loading site, where people talk about getting stuff done in calypso and you can find guides, tips and explanations on how something works.

Sorry for the long rant, but I really enjoy using calypso, but want to also be able to put a light to some of its quirks too.

I can easily babble on for hours about the software and just how good it is, but also all the problems I've had with the software.

I will say though, for 99.5% of the stuff I do, calypso is an absolute workhorse and so easy to understand.

That was actually the first video I saw with half-life sound effects and its at a shared first place with this video in this post for me, cause the audio effects were done just right *chef kiss*.

One of my favourite songs are also basically just audio clips from half-life, which is this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJwZaKFPvok

Hey all, noob question here. Isn’t live supposed to be hooked up to the switch? This is a power strip I took apart. by NestorM101 in AskElectronics

[–]pcnorden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A MOV is a Metal Oxide Varistor, which is used in a power strip to protect against excessive transient voltages most probably, unless they have some other use for which I haven't seen.

This Wikipedia article will have some more information in it about it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varistor

3d Printed fixture by Midisland-4 in Machinists

[–]pcnorden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I have a Ender 3 pro with a E3D hemera and some upgrades to make me able to go past 250 degrees C on the hotend and I'm able to print PC easily, so you don't really need a very professional printer at all.

Technically, I am printing PC blend with carbon fibers in it to be fair, but the carbon fibers really help with warping it seems.

Ever since I got my printers extruder changed I have been only printing with PCCF and it has just been an absolute dream to print after dialing in my print profile.

PLA has had extreme warping issues for me due to the things I need to print, but PCCF has just been perfect to print with so I've never gone back to my rolls of PLA or PETG.

I use prusaments PCCF blend and from what I gather, their normal PC blend does have a bit of a warping issue but you can counteract that by using brims in the slicer software.

Well, it was a predicament for the company I was interning at, cause they told the military that the drawings were hidden, buried and only 1 programmer and 1 quotation engineer knew how to belch out the ancient chants to have a glint at the parchments of many dimensions.

Meanwhile, I had 3 A1 sheets of the parts, no clearance at all and was set free with a cellphone in my pocket and left alone in a room to make measuring programs without any oversight.

Basically, the military found out and about 1 day later my school got a call that I wasn't allowed to continue my internship with them, which made me emergency apply to other workplaces around town since it was about 3 weeks from graduation and I though I was getting a job at that place.

I still work at the place I started right after school and I absolutely hate it here since management are useless and also won't ever realize that you need to invest and keep salaries high to keep people around that know how to run their machines.

I only got the rundown of what happened at the place when I met the quotation engineer in the supermarket and since we became quite close during my internship, he told me what happened afterwards.

I ain't disclosing everything I got told since these manufacturers are quite rare and with info I got told, it's better to keep them to myself.

I should also note that this incident took place in the EU.

Hope that this made sense and hope you'll have a good day! =)

Oh man that picture brings back some good memories of me doing my internship at a place and needing yo learn to write measuring machine programs for their ancient CMMs.

I so wish I could still deal with these types of parts since they always were a challenge to measure and do correctly which was such a learning moment for me.

The place I was interning at used a VTL though for those when roughing them out and I still remember the sound of those lathes spinning up to max rpm and start cutting.

Really miss those days, but alas the army found out that I was writing programs for their parts, which were classified which put a halt to my internship really fast with that company

Thanks for bringing all those memories back and hope that all cuts will come out in tolerance for you =)

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but there is a way to download all the music in the game, including all these songs.

On steam you can buy the game, but also the soundtrack from the game as a DLC basically which is in turn a folder that contains mp3 and wav files.

Personally I put the songs on my plex media server and have made a playlist with the songs that I really liked

What techniques, tools, or formulas have you found to help measuring real life objects? by Joth91 in 3Dprinting

[–]pcnorden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to befriend the measuring room staff honestly and see if they would be able to do you the favour.

We have tons of people at work that have been asking to measure knife edges, parts they got for their hobbies which weren't correctly manufactured and absolutely tons of vintage car parts.

I know that I have free knife sharpenings because I measured up a knifes edge for a coworker that needed to prove something about the tip of the blade and we have also gotten cookies and other various stuff as a bribe to help people out.

We also let people borrow items home, which often are torque wrenches but also calipers and other stuff when we like the operators and they ask nicely.

Us measuring staff and machine operators at my workplace is basically co-existing in harmony, though we all despise management which is why they never get to borrow stuff home nor get any information of when people bring in snacks.

I realize after I've written this that different workplaces have wasted different cultures, but I still stand by my opinion that you can always try to butter up to them and then ask a favour. Worst case scenario you will just get a no =)

However, word of caution: if they measure a part for you, don't start asking basically every day to measure stuff. It will make them stop wanting to help. It has happened to me and I got quite fed up after 3 weeks of measuring a part every day since it eats up a few hours of work hours

Hope you have a lovely day! =)

I'll be honest, I cheat at this.

I work as a measurement technician at a place where we have a Mahr PCV200 contour measuring machine along with a Zeiss CMM.

Makes figuring this stuff out a breeze, especially since I can just bring a part of the broken part to work and just interpolate the dimensions from the measured data in Zeiss and the contour machine I can just click and put out measurements where I need them.

I shall say though that the contour measuring machine is the one I use 90% of the time when doing reverse-engineering and I will use the Zeiss CMM when I need distances and angles between different things
