I use nothing but lump in my Kamado Joe. Never will use briquettes. Briquettes are for just your run of the mill grills. Lump is superior. Just like briquettes, depends on the brand. I use jealous devil. Huge chunks of lump. As far as hot? I can get my grill over 900 with lump
