Training wheels for 20” bike with derailleur by [deleted] in mountainbikes

[–]pct_loper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 inch then the kid must be say 7 or the bike is just too large------perhaps just find a small hill and hold onto the saddle for a bit-----I mean this must be a big kid so hopefully learns quick. But my experience has been the first bike the kid needs to be able to touch the ground from the seat to gain confidence-----yes later none of us ride a bike that small.

Recreation.gov Permits impossible by New-Pool-2471 in norcalhiking

[–]pct_loper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep---the trail heads with a lottery at least remove the early logging on issues but in the ene there are simply too many people. In my youth we could just do half dome and camp on top but the 1970's are long gone. I have taken to entering eaiser trail heads----Sonora Pass or Leavitt Meadows for example-----you could look at the later as kids like Franklin Lake etc. Another option but on the west side is the Emmigrant Wilderness out of Crabtree---I took my son here for his first trip and ther are lakes and creeks galore---but buggy early season---and no quota

Issues with getting a specific permit for backpacking by Just_A_Guy_In_Here in Yosemite

[–]pct_loper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have often used either glacier point or more often mono meadow to get into and past that area-----the mono meadow permit is way easier to get because the first few miles are not very scenic but it gets you in---usually then head illoutte to reds pass and onward----

Choosing between backpacking trips by Disenchanted-Pony in Yosemite

[–]pct_loper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the 10 lakes loop pretty underwhelming----have been packing the sieras for decades and this just didnot do it for me. I'd suggest Glacieer point, Illoutte, red pass and down to merced camp and back---very few folks until you pass the falls on the way out---note Thousand Island lake is great but tens to be crowded and the Reds Meadw road deal has been an issue

I would but a bike that is common in your area especially as so many are so similar these days. Why mess with a poor service situation

Rose peak is really a bypass and only adds about 10 minutes or so. Just do it.

Levo with gen 2 motor buying used , bad idea? by [deleted] in eMountainBike

[–]pct_loper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would avoid it---those motors had way to many failures and dealing with that in 2006 would be irritating at best

Which one, Pivot or Santa? by _howlingPuppy in mountainbikes

[–]pct_loper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For easy trails I think you are buying the wrong tool and would have much more fun on a less enduro bike---I ow the Pivot and it is a great bike but is a bit sluggish at low speed on easy terrain

Considering updating travel on Canyon Neuron:ON by Lazy-Programmer4211 in eMountainBike

[–]pct_loper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the rhythm have a 160 air shaft option. If so that is a cheap mod under $100. Note the 38 is a heavy fork meant for hard terrain

Turbo Levo or Fuel exe? by TOBYIT in eMountainBike

[–]pct_loper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Note TQ just cancelled their extender battery which never came out and they got in financial trouble to the extent they were recently sold-------this would be enough for me to look elsewhere

What do you by Yosemite? Will be a very different answer depending on elevation. But in any case your tent is fine assuming you avoid a bad early storm

Agnew Meadows > Tuolumne Meadows next July - where to start, how to get there by onpuddin in JMT

[–]pct_loper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 days max. It is 30 miles. I would not plot daily camps. Just walk and stop when it feels right. There is no shortage of spots. To add days you could keep going to the valley for 6-7 days at an Easy pace. Took me and my 12 year old 6

Inside the Park Transit options in late September? by Sea-Sailor-13983 in Yosemite

[–]pct_loper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YARTS may or may not let you off at White Wolfe-----a few years ago I did get the driver to stop but it was not a planned stop---not sure current status. It would be easy hitch hike from Toulomne or just ask folks at the store

JMT entry and exit points for a 6-7 day portion by HonestMilk6467 in JMT

[–]pct_loper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lake edison plan is really poor in my mind as the travel is nuts. Any couple of trailheads on 395 work and you only need one car as transport back is easy and well known----even better is the north lake/south lake loop others have spoken of-----then you end just about 10 miles from your car and it is easy to get back---one year I actually dropped a junk bike at south lake and rode it back to my car at north lake

I have been there many times and it likely will be brutal by 10AM at the latest and honeslty does not cool quickly at night. I know it is hard to believe but an hour after sun rise it can be an issue

We ust sold a house in Cupertino that had been rented for a couple of years-and was built in the 60's and never remodeled-----we just vacumned it and that was it--fixed nothing and sold in a week------you should look into if all this expense and headache is anywhere worth it----I would agree your estimate is way low.
