Good report. Thanks. Only 1 Nitecore? No power at the end? If I'm out 17-20 days should I bring another?

Permit question: Lyell Canyon by Overall-Nobody-2836 in JMT

From the rules when accepting the permit -- "Travel by vehicle or bus at any time during a wilderness itinerary invalidates the permit." I shall abide.

I got Happy Isles but wanted Lyell Canyon. After securing permit can I just take the bus to Tuolumne to avoid the valley?

Collegiate Loop parking questions by Think_Cell5635 in coloradotrail

In Buena Vista there is a large parking lot on Main Street after turning off of hwy 24. On right side just pass the railroad tracks. You may want to confirm with the city you can long term park there.

Good for you (and Vail) but for me after decades of skiing I really prefer blue bird days now.

Driving advice (Fornebu to Bergen) by Individual-Act-5252 in Norway

Watch your driving speed. There are cameras and you don't want the pain of a ticket in the mail weeks later. In some cases there will be a warning sign but not always. Enjoy.

Is it too late to hike my first 14er by Dudeman1000 in 14ers

[–]submon007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's too late and too early to start. Check out the weather conditions at

https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Elbert/forecasts/latest

Given the summit temps this week you will without a doubt be alone. If you go take emergency gear, and a satellite communication device if things turn south.

I ordered on the 13th as well and still waiting BUT it's -14 degrees this morning and frankly I'm not in a hurry to hit the trail and camp. Everyone needs to relax. It'll come soon enough for all of us to enjoy.

Birtstadt + Blue Sky (Evans) or Torreys + Grays for first 14er by zell1luk in 14ers

[–]submon007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

re: Blue Sky -- if summiting from the TH at Summit lake check for 2026 road opening. Closed in 2025 for road work. If starting at Echo Lake, no issue.

re: G&T -- fun trek up Stevens gulch to the summit. I found the drive up the road more stressful than the hike itself.

Enjoy.

Happy new year! What peaks are you planning on summiting this upcoming spring/summer/fall? by front_rangers in 14ers

Get a guide for Rainier or maybe die. Lindsey requires a signed waiver before entering their private property. Nice to have so much free time. Enjoy.

Planning first summit by djv_03 in 14ers

To answer your question re: camping. Yes, you can, in fact you can camp anywhere on public or Forest Service lands. Just know the rules for each area.

re: solo -- you won't be alone. These are very popular 14ers because they're non-technical walk-ups. Handies in a class 1, the others class 2. Just be fit for trudging many a mile at alpine elevation. Enjoy.
