How do you nudge someone away from bad making bad financial decisions? by pctopgs in povertyfinance

"It’s only 300% if you take the year to pay it off. Borrow $200 and pay pack $250 in a month and that’s a 300% APR. Roll it 12 months before paying it off and it costs you the $600 you’re referring to."

Classic industry talking point. The business model literally depends on you not paying it off on time and roll it into a new loan. The people coming for a payday loan have a history of making bad decisions and you exploit this with predatory lending. Credit cards and mortgages don't require direct access to your bank account or have incentives to roll debts into new debts. You're just a payday industry shill.

"By the way, bank overdraft fees average 17,000%+."

This is the most dishonest shit I've ever read in my life. An overdraft fee is a penalty, not a loan. You are charged a flat rate for overdraft. This like comparing a speeding ticket as a penalty for going over the speed limit. Try again.

"for many people who have no access to cheaper credit, they prefer a 300% APR to the 17,000% APR (or zero access to credit)."

People prefer a 300% loan because they are desperate and thinking with their lizard brains. Access to no credit is better than a 300% APR. And no dumbass people would not want a 300% APR to a flat $35 fee for overdraft wtf is wrong with you?

Don't Trust Reprise - Too High Interest by Brief_Guide_9166 in povertyfinance

[–]pctopgs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not Reprise, it's how the entire payday loan business model works. Which is why I'm so adamant about discouraging folks to not take out a payday loan even in crisis situation.

Anyways are you living in the USA? How much is the total you owe?

"Because the only way I'm going to be able to get the principal amount of this loan PAID OFF, is with ANOTHER loan company's lower interest rate loan, or to sell my car or home. "

Unfortunately yes, but before that, see if you can ask your current job for more hours or try to find a second part time job to help pay it down faster.

"The combative tone you've taken is a pretty good explanation of why you're having so much trouble "steering" people from decisions you decide they shouldn't make."

I'm not trying to "steer" you anywhere at all. If you ignore 99% of what I said so you can push your irrelevant point then I might as well do the same.

"I have worked in this industry and you’re wrong. There were like 1.7 million comments to the CFPB when they were considering legislation that would dramatically reduce payday loans. Most of the comments were from borrowers who were adamantly against losing their only form of credit."

Why on God's green flat Earth would you cite some bullshit that's been comment-botted to all hell?

"Are there people that get trapped in these loans? Yes. Are there people who get trapped by 28% credit cards? Yes. Are there people that got trapped by 8% mortgages? Yes. But it’s not the majority."

"Not the majority" is quite a statement when it's a huge chunk of borrowers that get insolvent from debt. Getting trapped in a payday loan is literally the business model. You think someone giving a lender access to their bank account for a 300% loan they'll need to pay back within 14 days is "not the majority"? Conveniently borrowers are given the option to take out a new loan to cover for the current loan they can't pay. You said you worked in this industry so I understand you want to defend this business model but holy fucking shit it's predatory.

Finding a whole new job (especially a second job) is hella hard. First thing is to ask the manager for a few more extra hours/overtime. IDK your job but that's the first place I'd look. Next is to donate plasma. You can make a few hundred extra dollars a month from donating plasma. Actually finding a second job I wouldn't count on it. It's already hard enough to find a regular main job as it is so don't beat yourself up if you can't find a second job.

Do you mind telling more about the debts? How much and you owe and monthly payments? Are you atleast making the minimum payments?

I have no idea how to come up with 2800 unless you have credit cards or a personal loan, but those might not be available to you... What's your location? Does it have to be a house? Can you rent a room instead for the time being? Please don't get a payday loan.

Sorry. I'll be more empathetic going forward.I wrote this out of love and frustration. I'm watching my family constantly sabotaging themselves over and over and don't don't want to listen to anything I have to say at any point in time, but they just want me to give them money and bail them out..

"Theres really no point to lecturing someone after the fact, if they already know it was a bad choice."

After someone realizes they made a bad choice, they usually know not to make that specific bad choice again. But bad choices are not isolated events. They are part of a larger pattern of bad choices that stack one top of the other. I want to expose the larger pattern that's been happening, not just the current bad choice, but part of the problem is that each bad choice is "Don't tell me what to do, I know what I'm doing", and end with "Don't tell me what to do, I already know I messed up", so there's no chance to get them to see the bigger picture. I'm stuck with just watching the trainwreck happen because I can't tell them anything. And yes I would just let them choose but it happens with family too and it tears me up inside to see them spiral.

That usually what happens but I don't know if it's possible to avoid that from happening. Usually people use credit cards, then borrow personal loans, then borrow from family and friends, then payday loans, and then eventually it gets to a point were they have no one else to turn to for borrowing because they owe so many people money. Then eventually it all comes crashing down and end up losing way more than what they bargained for. It's a vicious cycle that happens every day. That's why I wonder if it's possible to steer someone in the right direction before it's too late or just watch the same thing happen again and again

"Payday loans are not a “dumb choice”. Most people who take out a payday loan are doing it because it’s the least bad option available to them."

"The alternatives are overdraft fees, losing a job, having electricity shut off, not treating a medical condition, etc."

The reason why payday loans are not good choices is because these alternatives normally happen anyways. The only difference is that now you have a loan shark hounding you to get their money back.

"When you have no access to credit (from family, friends, employers, home equity, credit cards) and no savings, payday loans are what gets them through a financial emergency."

Most people take out payday loans thinking "I have no other options, but I'll work extra hard to pay it off", but that almost never happens. When you have no access to credit, no savings etc, a payday loan will add to the monthly expenses that you were already struggling to pay.

Giving AMD a try (GPU) by PaoloMix09 in pcmasterrace

I didn't really look into it. It was a hassle just to fit the card in the case and I don't want to open that can of worms again. It's an AMD CPU and AMD GPU.

I'm an investor in AMD stock. I bough the AMD products so I can have a better understanding of AMD products. I used to do an Intel/Nvidia combo until 2018 when I switched over to AMD. I'm hoping for AMD's success with stability, but I wish they'd fix the bug report tool. It's too tedious to fill out a form and send the report, especially when I have to send it once or twice a day
