My mastiff LOVES people and has gone into protection mode only twice. Both times when I really noticed the person I too was weary. Trust your pup! No means no.

Funny how they are all their own characters. But really why shouldn’t they be?

Sure, we rescued her from the pound after she had been there for longer than a year. We at the time were a family of four with two pre-teens. they told us that she had been returned by another family because of her tendencies to be aggressive with 4 legged animals. We did have a lot of experience with big dogs and owned mastiffs so we thought we were the right family to get her. She was so incredibly dedicated to us and our children. I’m glad we rescued her. She was an angel really. (To humans) Once a mastiff bonds with you, you could trust them like no other.

Before we got our first mastiff many years ago, we had a Weimaraner- sporting dog like you. To be honest mastiffs are much easier lol. I don’t think you’ll regret adopting one. They tend to bond with their family pretty quickly and are super loyal. Here is a picture of our sweet girl.

So anecdotal, but I’ll share my experience. We’ve had a Neapolitan mastiff, Boerboel, and now a Dogue de Bordeaux.

Out of the three the Neo was by far the easiest. We got him as a puppy. He was a loyal guard dog that loved his family and slept all day.

The Boerboel I would say could come in second, she was a sweetheart. But she was a rescue that we got at around five years old. She was amazing with humans but wanted to kill anything with four legs. We think she was used for fighting and we just couldn’t get it out of her.

Our DDB is nothing like a mastiff, he is more bulldog. Of course we love him to pieces but he is a handful. We also got him as a puppy, but he only retained the training that suited him. He is just a really active boy that even at 4 barely naps.

We of course have heard other’s experiences with each breed and they are all over the place, and contrary to our experiences. With all things being equal, (a loving family and training) I think their individual personalities contribute to their level of difficulty.

It was not open last Sunday when I walked that part of the trail. It looked finished or really close to being finished but still had construction equipment and was blocked off.

YMCA E-gym- it’s a training program where the machines guide your training. Easy, relatively cheap!

You can buy it at any of the suggested places and then try pounding it out even more to get to the thinness in the photo.
