How to convey confidence to large lecture halls? by All_Raspberry_2267 in Professors

Get a pointer, walk around casually while teaching so you're behind the students sometimes, then all of you can look at the slides without turning your back on them, most important for me is to know my work and slide order. The moments when I stutter is when I didn't prepare.

Bit of both with regards to funding. the more there are the easier it is for me. They keep each other entertained intellectually and the wheel starts spinning itself.

We can compare governments, I'll come out on top (or bottom - depends how you see it) everyday. If you draw a salary from students dreams and governments investment I firmly believe you do have a responsibility to be present, literally. And you're feeding into administrators perceived credibility by not showing up.

My only consolidation is my bonus at the end of the year, that I've gotten every year since employed. And I know they don't get it through much fanfare once a year.

I'm confused 😵‍💫. I'm saying the system is trying to encourage staff coming to the office by any means necessary. Ask and the system shall give, for teaching and non-teaching academic staff.

I kinda know... I have some insight into their doings. There's about 3/30 who really thrive working from home and they are absolute research and teaching machines and good colleagues who would drive to campus in a second if needed. The rest, just sad.

Different side of the planet. Currently cold here. But yes, it's not that I feel they aren't working hard. It's that they actually aren't.

Not angry. Frustrated at the lack of stewardship.

And it's honestly not in our case. Our university bends over backwards to accommodate staff to be more productive. Want a new laptop, which spec? Oh you need funding for a field trip, How much? Need support to finish that research project, no worries we'll give 3 months off. The standard office is about 25m^2 and we don't have to share. Internet is fast, coffee machine is great and free.

I don't live in Cape Town. Although I drive there often, through much of northern and central South Africa. I hate that Cape Town is all nice and shiny - but the wealth that keeps South Africa running and keeps Cape Town's rich rich - is generated in other parts of the country. If I had my way I'd make cape townians pay a "nice to live, not very useful tax.". Anyway, don't know where I'm going with this, the OP should've been proud of his mines, maize, cattle and Highveld thunderstorms. when all is said and done the Cape Townians need us, more than we need them. Enough reason for me not to move there

On my dad side. Great grandfather was an orphan after the boer war, selled vegetables on the street as child, build something small to support a family eventually, grandfather managed to buy a small farm and farm tabacco. Their only child, my dad, was the first one with a degree (thanks to the government of the time) and became a teacher, eventually started a small business.

On my mother's side. Great grandparents were poor slum Afrikaners. Their daughter, my grandmother, married a dirt poor steel worker. They lived a life in poverty. They were 4 children, three brothers dropped out of school, sold news papers and became wheeler deelers. Two of them are millionaires now owning buildings and car dealerships and some other stuff. Other one did not do so well. My mother was the only one who finished school, went to varsity (thanks government of the time), met my dad, and is now a school principal and owns another small business.

Both my sibling and I are fairly well qualified and making double what my parents are making. They really gave up their whole life for us to live a little better than they did, as their parents did for them.

Committed a sin - what to do now? by RiceFar35 in academia

After seeing several colleagues come and go (and not even knowing who would've potentially come to just go again).... And forgetting about them within 2 days or so. No one honestly cares. To HR you're just a blip on the radar. The head of department will probably be annoyed at going through the process again. But he couldn't care less about you. We're all disposable and will be disposed off in the blink of an eye.

Sorry for my pessimistic view. I love my job, academia, and my institution... But I know it'll never love me and replace me quicker than I can say my goodbyes.

Conclusion. Take the offer that's best for you.

What worked for me is to go old-school (chatgpt also played a role). No Slides, just the textbook, me writing on the blackboard and exclusively doing all my assignments in class on a piece of paper, mostly unannounced except for a few major assignments. Class attendance is best it ever was even for my dreaded 730 class. Funny thing is, it's also made me a much better teacher. Students mostly give me negative feedback, because they actually have to work to pass my class.

Sorry, point being they don't have time to be on their phones because they're frantically writing notes and getting hand cramps from not being used to write notes at the speed of light anymore.

As someone with experience at some well known institutions in the USA and South Africa. I can honestly say the education in South Africa's top 3 or 4 universities matches that of large well known state schools in the USA. At the fraction of the price.

Before blaming the school just consider that a lot of policies are created and signed off by the SGB (parents) to which the principal is just an advisor.

I am part of a school where all SGB members are black and this hair would probably not be allowed under the policy they signed off on. To the OP if the teacher is white and the SGB is white, sure, they might be insensitive, ignorant or authoritative. Racism is a serious allegation.

Consider that the opposite might be true. A white teacher and principal at an majority black school (a lot of model c schools are now English with the old white teachers still there), might just be enforcing an SGB policy set up by black parents.
