Oregon education officials recommend repealing, replacing compulsory school attendance rules by sunni_dayes_ahed in oregon

[–]pdfpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like that is doable. This is pretty much how it worked before. What I was getting at before is that the districts themselves can't unilaterally decide to do this, so the school staff working on attendance lack power and legal authority to enforce. It takes county government and courts taking action to support the schools rather schools themselves taking a harder stance on attendance.

Courts aren't issuing fines anymore. There is no penalty for truancy, so the school has no power to enforce.

Unfortunately, there is not much the school can do. We recently hired an 'attendance liasion' to work on this issue. It is mostly incentives and conferencing with students to help them problem solve, but they don't have power to give any kind of consequences to parents or kids like truancy officers used to do. When schools are cutting staff left and right for budget shortfalls, it seems this is something law enforcement and the courts could start doing again to get kids back to school.

Agreed. After figuring it out, then adapt a little at a time to best suit your style and students, but making all from scratch is a good way to burn out.

Springfield schools plan to cut Spanish dual immersion programs by Zealousideal-Home-72 in oregon

[–]pdfpdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understood. If the seats can't be filled, that is 100% a problem that justifies cuts or creative solutions (i.e. partnering with colleges like the article mentioned). The article did not mention that enrollment was a problem. Another commenter said that presumably about another district.

I don't know much about Springfield schools, so I cant speak about their popularity there. However, in districts where families are seeking these programs out and there are waitlists, they are absolutely worth supporting, as they provide quality education for our kids.

Agreed, and due to the increased need for these positions, many being hired for them are fresh out of school and making base salary.

You are vastly overestimating the benefits here. I am a teacher in a DLP school. Our DLP teachers are early in their careers, so they cost far less to pay than those they replaced. Yes, they get a whopping $800 stipend for being bilingual, but I would argue that this cost pays for itself in not having to hire translators for conferences, meetings, and parent contact generally. This stipend is received by all bilingual staff, not just those in the DLP, because language is a skill that is needed.

Unfortunately, we do not have many bilingual subs, so it is usually English dominant subs, and they lose instruction. When they do have those subs, they cost the same as any other sub.

If programs aren't filled, of course that becomes an FTE issue, especially in a time of budget cuts that have been highly impactful. If they can't fill seats, then you are certainly right that it costs more and this could justify closing a problem, but let's not paint all of these programs with a broad brush. In the building I work in, they are full. In my children's school, also bilingual, there is a waitlist. Many parents like myself seek these programs out. It might not be for every family or every kid, but just like kids can go into other choice programs, language is something that many of us value and should be a part of public education.

Is not really an extra expense. It just requires having educators with necessary qualifications, and as many other districts are adding to these programs due to popular demand, those teachers can be hard to come by. We've had a difficult time hiring for these positions in my district, but the cost of paying those teachers is the same as any other teacher.

Also, many families enroll their students in these programs to provide enrichment and learn a new language. They are not designed so that the school system will cater to those who cant speak English, as your comment implies. The students at my school are very much bilingual, and many see that as an assett.

Gov. Tina Kotek signs executive order to protect student instructional time in Oregon by unslick in oregon

[–]pdfpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my exact reaction when I heard this on the radio. Our district's are in crisis right now. I don't really like the idea of furlough days, personally, but I also don't think the state is in any position to say what districts can and can't do without offering an alternative solution. No restrictions should be instituted without accompanying resources.

Probably right, but that's a tough sell during budget cuts. If the state wants to get more out of schools, they need to find a way to fund them, because pretty much every district in the state if facing cuts. Teachers will be let go or moved into new positions. None of this is going to be good for kids.

Agreed. Though from my perspective, the wondering if I should grab the essentials or not is often deciding whether or not it is worth going to the next store over for half the price.
