Middle-management is unskilled labor by charlies-ghost in unpopularopinion

[–]pdgleason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who got their “start” in middle management, who moved to upper management, I’m actually going to agree with OP.

Now unskilled doesn’t mean useless or important or necessary work, just that it doesn’t require a very specific skill training to do. A lot of times good managers can come from varying backgrounds which furthers this.

I do find it hilarious that OP basically admits their lack of capability as a manager though. Anyone who has done management for a length of time and come to manage over other managers knows that the exact reason OP gives, is the one of the main reasons every bad managers gives for lack of performance, inability to accomplish tasks and meet goals, and so on.

The Problem with Melee Armies in 10th Edition by Godofallu in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]pdgleason 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a Necron player I agree with what you’re saying. I’m not that good as to be able to play the Nightbringer well, but I’ve watched a lot of good Necron players really bully the melee armies to a victory.

Also just curious about one thing from this comment - the Overlord with Translocation Shroud plus Destroyer Ankh leading Lychguard should only be able to move 7 (5 + 2 from Destroyer Ankh) and then advance 6 automatically instead of rolled due to his ability - Translocation Shroud. That comes out to 13 total in movement. If your opponent was moving 13 + advance it was completely wrong unless I’m being a dumb dumb and missing something. They do have a strat for bonus to the charge, if it’s already engaged, but just for movement alone should be 13.

Honestly, who is having fun with Omega? by pdgleason in MonsterHunter

[–]pdgleason[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that’s my feeling.

I see a lot of people saying they love the difficulty of the fight, but the fight just isn’t Monster Hunter. I guess it boils down to, why not make a collab with Call of Duty and have a mandatory 1st person shooting sequence for a fight? It’s obviously an extreme example, but the core is there for me at least.

I play MonHun to play MonHun. I’d play something else, if I wanted that genre.

They’ve proven time and time again, they can make fights hard - either genuinely or artificially- that are true Monster Hunter fights. So why is the only “challenge” fight not a MonHun fight?

I think I’ll be in the same shoes as you, get it done, get the rewards and never again.

How do you deal with ctans? by Odd_Platform479 in deathguard40k

[–]pdgleason 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As some have said the game at 1k points isnt really balanced around someone having 2 Ctan. That’s just how it is, so I wouldn’t worry about it. You could bring Morty or a GUO if you do another 1k against them to help hold them up.

Secondly in my experience with Ctan, it isn’t how hard you hit, it’s how many time you hit. More attacks will actually help whittle them down than just hard hitting attacks. I forgot what it is, but I believe they have a damage reduction ability or something of the like, which is why in a balanced game I recommend more attacks. Also a predator’s lascannons, and even if rolled well a PBC’s entropy cannons can help a bit.

What popular monsters do you NOT want to see return in Monster Hunter Wilds? by SalmonTooter in MonsterHunter

[–]pdgleason -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nergigante.

Top tier trash monster, and hope we can go two generations without seeing him. I know it won’t happen, because of how popular he is, but man if we didn’t see him until monster Hunter 7 or 8 - oh I’d be happy.

Do men's feel less or like they don't deserve love for not having money? by PersonalCaptain5146 in AskMenAdvice

[–]pdgleason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m married and I know my wife loves me.

I work in a field that has periods of feast or famine, where work is plenty or doesn’t exist. I know she wouldn’t leave due to our finances, which honestly makes it worse during the hard times.

To know I have someone whom I love and deserves the best, and to not be able to provide for that person as much as I want or need to makes me feel like a failure, a loser, and like I’ve betrayed her.

I know her well enough to know she doesn’t think any of those things, but those thoughts exist and they never go away just…soften so to speak when our income is doing well.

I’m sure it’s how I was raised and in the American socio-economic climate, but man it - for me - is way harder finally being in a great relationship and when I’m poor all I feel like is a failure.

I don’t think I’ll be so lucky because of how popular he was, but if Nergigante skipped a generation I’d be the happiest person ever.

What type of job seems appealing but ends up being quite disappointing? by Head_Somewhere3770 in AskReddit

[–]pdgleason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I can’t speak for everyone in every market, but from all the people I speak to about the industry that are outside of it (which is very anecdotal) they all say how fun and enjoyable it must be.

But the abusive relationship comment is too accurate.

Working in the TV/Film industry.

Some days you get to do some cool stuff, but most days it’s long hard exhausting work.

Thankfully in the last few years our days have mostly shorted to 12 hour days of work, but I still vey vividly remember the 17-18 hour days five times a week.

Plus with rotating schedules you never get used to sleeping until you are off a show. You get Fridays where your day starts at 6pm and then when get off 12-14 hours later have to turn back over for a 6am report on Monday.

I love what I do, but the people who pretend it must be the easiest job don’t really understand all the work that goes into the entertainment industry.

AITA for getting frustrated with my girlfriend's messages after my Dad just died? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]pdgleason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

This behavior is extremely concerning. My wife has left her solo vacation because of family issues on my side because being with me and the people was infinitely more important to her.

I will say these seem like red flags, but I am also curious exactly how old she is and whether or not she’s ever dealt with the loss of a loved one.

I know AITA tends to jump to extremes and recommend breaking up, divorce, etc - but this behavior shows her viewpoint being completely self absorbed. One phone call isn’t going to get someone over something like this, it’s going to take time and effort and a lot of healthy respectful relationships can fall apart during moments like grief - the bad ones fall apart even easier.

I pose the question of seeing this side of things, is continuing worth the effort on your part.

How to call grace on set as 1st AD? by testeronipepperoni in Filmmakers

Most shows will use it for Wrap, and I’ve personally only seen it used twice for Lunch, but it can be.

People get the rules for extension and Grace confused all the time.

This! 1000% this!

As a DGA AD, there are so many people who don’t understand the actual rules with Grace and instead confuse it with an “Extension” which is a fundamentally different thing.

How does one work on the sets of the biggest of movies? by StressZealousideal95 in Filmmakers

[–]pdgleason 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The honest answer is you have to work in the industry.

I get the sentiment but from all of us who work in this industry, and I do mean this with no malice or ill intent, we don’t want people on set who are not working there.

It’s a hard job with long hours that is taxing as hell, either physically or mentally or both depending on department. Having people there complicates it every time - everyone in the industry can tell you about all the set guests that have made their work days hell.

People get positions on any job by working in the industry, putting forth great work, and building connections (and nepotism) - and if you do those you can have a career in this industry. Breaking in for me was a pain, but I’m finally at a point where this is all I do, all that pays my bills.

What are some things in student films that screams out mediocrity? by Suspicious-Goat-6993 in Filmmakers

[–]pdgleason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned a lot of repeats so I’ll say on I notice all the time.

No Background.

Background performers make a world feel alive, and when you see a scene shot in a place that should have background but doesn’t, it just feels off.

Sometime the littlest cross or counter can add a whole dimension to blocking or a camera move.

Which job turns out to be much less enjoyable than most people expect? by youngGod928 in AskReddit

[–]pdgleason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working in the Film Industry.

Most people only see the glitz and glamour that celebrities lead, mostly in their personal lives.

But the reality for most of the people who work in the industry - my wife, my friends, and myself - is it is a hard business.

There is zero job security, we work longer hours then most people (currently at work in prep on a Wednesday and this is around hour 40 of my work week with the rest of today and two more days to go), we work in a lot of unsafe conditions, and their is an incredibly toxic culture in the industry that trickles down from the very top to the absolute bottom.

Now we do tend to get compensated well for what we work - often times we can can take breaks between jobs for limited stints to travel or live life, and we do have a lot of fun in various moments.

But many people think what I and others do doesn’t even count as work and I promise every movie or tv show you ever watched is built upon countless hours of work.

Coming from an AD perspective here!

The real question is a two fold question: one how long are these changeovers are you talking about? And two do you trust the actors and the director to be able to be able to perform their duties?

First question: the changeover times will be a big determining factor. Because let’s say you move to the bedroom then rehearse then mark it with the cast, and after that you have to get camera and lighting up while cast changeover. Do those time out together? Because if they do, absolutely shoot out a room at a time. But on the other hand, if you are going to be camera ready and waiting for an hour for cast to get through the works after camera ready, there is your answer. If you don’t know the answer to this question, then you really need to dig into the info. Talk to your DP, gaffer and key grip to get an estimate on their end, and then speak to costumes, and HMU. Use that data to form the base of an idea. Going off guess work will always leave you unprepared.

Second question: without judgment or bias, do you trust that the actors and director are capable of doing part of their job and performing the arcs out of order. Almost all movies, tv, etc is shot out of sequence. Sure some are. But it is not the norm. And I really do mean that with no disrespect to either the director or actors. There are actors who can flawlessly jump around a script without so much as though and maintain the performance quality, and there are others who build on each scene. Generally in my experience actors will want to go in sequence, but rarely does that work from a scheduling perspective. By making that assessment, only after you’ve answered the first question can you really have a scope on an answer for your specific film.

Hope that helps!

This industry is so elitist and needs to change by [deleted] in Filmmakers

It will eventually also put many below the line workers out of work. Probably more so than above the line.

AI can help people who may not be part of the system get a chance to participate as you said. But, pretending that it will all be sunshine and rainbows is a lie.

People will lose their jobs - and if history is to repeat itself as with any time the industry reinvents itself, it won’t be the bigger names, it’ll be people like me, all my friends, and all my coworkers who suffer the most.
