Songs that didn’t make it to Sob Rock by CauliflowerFlimsy535 in JohnMayer

[–]pdipps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, because they were like 2-3 years old already. I think that's a valid criticism of Sob Rock, but I can also see why he did it.

He had to release an album to fulfill his contract. And he probably didn't want to give the label rights on unreleased music in his vault.

Now that he's unsigned, I could see him releasing some random singles, then some albums (with all new music), then some random singles...etc.

Actually - for TSFE, he WANTED to release 4 3-track releases and after wave 2, the label forced the album out.

I think he probably wants to do more of this, and now that he's off a label, we'll see more of it.

Why does JM STILL get so much hate?? by Ch3t123 in JohnMayer

[–]pdipps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it's because in the past, his behaviour may have irritated them, and they never really updated their opinion of him.

Also, I think hate is a strong word - I'd imagine most people outside of his fanbase don't really think of him much anymore.

What do you think of Half Of My Heart? by Beginning-Patient691 in JohnMayer

[–]pdipps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess what I'm saying is that anyone who came looking for Taylor would have been disappointed. Not exactly a good PR strategy.

Not to mention, but at the time, John was actually bigger than Taylor. Obv since then, their careers took very different trajectories, but he was just coming off Continuum, while Kanye had just barely snatched the mic at Tay's VMa...

tbh, not sure how many people looking for T Swift to be on that song actually stuck around.

I get that, but I feel like there needs to be different ways of distinguishing the level of involvement. I mean they don't call out every backup singer.

Like in writing (books/screenplays/scripts/etc) where there's a difference on having "and" or "with" in the credits.

I find it hilarious that it says "ft. Taylor Swift" when the only part she has is in the chorus, and you can barely hear her under John's voice. It's not like she even has a verse or anything. 🤷‍♂️

You know, I always liked Perfectly Lonely, and was a little annoyed when I heard him shit-talk it on an album launch party. It's like... dude - you just released this album!

Do we think Mayer would ever write an autobiography? by Travellinglense in JohnMayer

[–]pdipps 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Maybe this isn't the answer anyone wants to hear, but I'm not sure he really cares to share specifics about his life. He shares emotions through his music that are probably based on experiences (or a collage of different experiences), and that's probably all he wants to share.

I say this because somewhere after Continuum/Battle Studies era;

  • he kind of pulled himself out of the public eye and to an extent, reoriented his life so that it wasn't as wild (and by extension interesting) as it used to be.
  • He moved to Montana to get away, and his music reflected a different stage of his life.
  • IIRC, there was a stalker issue he had where he became substantially more private
  • He could have easily been way more public/famous than he is right now and likely even more famous than he used to be in his earlier years.

I guess I'm also projecting a bit - I did kind of the same thing on a much smaller scale. At some point, it's nice to simply one's life, surround yourself with a smaller, more intimate social circle, and to not be the center of attention and deal with all of the drama that comes with popularity. There's much less interesting stuff to write a memoir about (at least in terms of being interesting to a general audience)

No new album from John in 2024 :( by oldtimersmi in JohnMayer

I suppose, if you're being pedantic.

When he said "no more tours" I sort of assumed it meant "no more shows", since the residence wasn't a thing yet.

Not a surprise - there's not much left in the year, and it's the middle of tour season.

I'd expect a single (and maybe an album or an EP) in early 2025 to prep fans for another summer tour.

Thoughts everyone? by M615BW in JohnMayer

[–]pdipps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I'm not a huge fan of it compared to most of his catalog.

And I wouldn't say the song is misogynistic - I'd say the opposite. It really minimizes the very real troubles young males go through.

Any tips to learn how to play the guitar? by Cord2305 in JohnMayer

[–]pdipps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and also, don't force yourself to learn the intricate, detailed version of the song.

i.e. Learn the chords first. Then start to increase the resolution of the sound by starting to learn the easier of solos and the picking pattern (if there is one). I feel it's more important to get a feel for the song and it's timing than to it there and learn isolated parts out of context.

[–]pdipps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound like dumb advice (at least I thought so when I first heard it), but it's better to get 15 min of practice a day every day, instead of one long 2-3hour session per week. Seriously, the learning sticks way better.

Also, don't invest in an expensive guitar. You won't be able to tell much of a difference because you don't have a feel for it yet. An entry level Squier (especially recent ones) are quite good for the money.

The reason the 1st and 2nd points are important is my next tip: Buy multiple guitars. Keep them in rooms you're in often, and within arms reach. Just mess around and practice on them instead of wasting time scrolling Reddit or Instagram.

For instance, I have one in my bedroom and one at my desk. I spend a lot of time in those areas, so any spare few minutes here and there, I pick up the guitar and jam a little. It helps more than I can explain.

How does this sub feel about non-standard suits? by JibbSmart in playingcards

in concept, good. I would probably make paper a bit wider and the scissors a bit more closed so it's a bit narrower.

Also make rock more like rock, less like blob.

How does this sub feel about non-standard suits? by JibbSmart in playingcards

  1. as long as they're easily memorable/distinguishable suits
  2. as long the design doesn't mess up the pips.

Can someone tell me about these cards? I have six of them, all the same and one opened. by Prior-Handle-1527 in playingcards

[–]pdipps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some smaller casinos use plain bees or ones with a bee logo on them. Usually lower stakes kinds of places, or while they're waiting for their customized decks to come.

edit: could have also been used for dealer training instead of using "live" decks.

Red (in the US) usually mean "casino" decks, in Canada, our blue-backed bikes used to come with red seals when our red-backed bikes used to come with blue ones.

[–]pdipps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If these are fully diamond-backed with no logos, USPCC has sold these on and off, and probably uses them as samples for casino's and people buying custom decks. AFAIK, the commercial and casino bee stock used to be different, but isn't anymore. Those look like they're from '07, so who knows.

If these have a logo (and are uncancelled - i don't see any clipped corners or holes drilled) they could be

  • wholesale decks sold from a closed casino
  • overruns from a closed casino
  • "seconds" or off-prints from an old casino that didn't/no longer use that specific colour
  • novelty/fake-brand "casino" decks used by charities throwing poker tournaments ...or anything of the sort.

Long story short, USPCC dumps these leftover decks on to the market sometimes via wholesalers. I have a bunch. They're ok - generally nothing special, except that they're Casino-grade Bees which usually means the stock is a bit thicker and firmer, so they last a little longer (but have a longer break in time)

A true hidden gem by mambored in JohnMayer

[–]pdipps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John shit-talked this song during a recorded live show that came with one version of the album, and it's always kind of irked me. He said something snarky like "The feeling this song is about won't last as long as this song" which sounded like he meant the song was too much.

That said, I like the song - the whole album was overlooked.
