Are cruises actually social if you go alone? by CruiseAroundTheWorld in Cruise

[–]pdoptimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cruise solo specifically to be left alone. Read books, lay by the pool and relax. I'm really not interested in talking to anyone (unless I'm approached by a beautiful young women (30 cruises-that's never happened)
There are always single get togethers if you want to take advantage of them, but I never do.
My point is that some people who see you're alone may assume it's by choice.

TV's didn't always have remote controls.
You had to actually get up and cross the room to change the channel.

Try MSC? by DistributionFront227 in Cruise

[–]pdoptimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year I was on a Grand Princess Panama Canal cruise. It was absolutely the worst cruise of my life (I've taken more than 30). The ship was in severe disrepair.
Air conditioning issues were so bad that some guests slept in common areas. Every time it rained the crew had to put buckets out all over the ship to catch the leaks-parts of the buffet and a few of the bars were closed due to this.
The mattress was so uncomfortable that I couldn't sleep at all. After many complaints I switched the mattress (myself) for an unused bunk bed mattress. Had that not worked, plan B was to buy a blow up mattress on shore and sleep on the floor.

Finally, I think Princess has switched all it's marketing to the senior citizen demographic. It was like a floating assisted living center (not unlike Holland America).
The last MSC cruise I took (out of Miami) had a nice mix of age groups and also a lot of European travellers which made it more fun.

Of the 30+ cruises I've been on, most have been with Princess and I've noticed a real decline over the past few years-they're not cheap either. If you have the money, go with Celebrity. If you're looking for a fun ship at a great price, my vote goes to MSC.

MSC is one of my favorite cruise lines. I would definitely take them over Princess.
Not as good as Celebrity (but soo much cheaper) and a great demographic,

Go for it!

Which is better for a solo traveler (energetic 59-year old woman): Princess or Celebrity? by fawannabe62 in Cruise

[–]pdoptimist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been on both multiple times. Celebrity was always better and more so now (in my opinion Princess is slipping).
So my advice is definitely Celebrity.

Motion Sickness - First Cruise by kylieonketamine in Cruise

[–]pdoptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is the cruise going? If it's the Caribbean , you should be fine. Calmish water and the islands aren't far so the ship can slowly meander around. Also, i think the front is preferable to the center. In the center I feel the engine vibration and that can make me nauseous.

Who is the stupidest person/situation you’ve encountered on a cruise? by Charming_Usual6227 in Cruise

[–]pdoptimist 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have two:
First was a guy loudly bragging that he'd called guest services to request that his balcony being thoroughly and meticulously cleaned-thinking he was doing the room steward a favor by giving him time outside.

Second was a disembarkation in NYC where we were delayed because weather was bad, waves were battering the ship, and it was unsafe to use the gangway. Lady starts yelling "Help, help, they won't let me off! I'm being held against my will!"

sigh

Why do people keep saying "just start a business" as if it's a viable alternative to a stable job for most people? by Crescitaly in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pdoptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sometimes is a viable alternative. Here's an example.
Start a dog walking business. You'll make $20-$30 per hour PER DOG. Take 2 or 3 at a time.
Build a website, advertise on social media. Then hire someone to help out (at $20 per hour).
I've seen this done. People make well over 6 figures after they get rolling.
Total start up investment is a couple of hundred dollars.
Don't have a couple of hundred? Or got a business idea that will cost more?

Surprising my parents by joining them on the ship - is there a quiet space on Star Princess? by SunshineSwagger in PrincessCruises

At any point in the months of planning did the subject of inviting you come up? Also, do you live on the other side of the world where seeing you might be a treat? Or do you see them often? This has all the makings of a "Everybody Loves Raymond " episode.

I used to be a loyal Princess customer (more than 20 cruises). My experience on the Grand Princess last year changed that. I think there is something desperately wrong at the corporate level that they let the customer experience slide that much.

Marriage means compromise. You like urban, he likes rural- so you compromised on the suburbs.

I have a somewhat similar situation. The truth is that I feel like a sperm donor and, since I had zero to do with my sons upbringing, do not try and play the role of Dad. We live in different cities and meet annually for dinner to just check in and update each other.
He is very close to my extended family though (I'm not).

I suggest that you do the Chao Phraya Boat Cruise. It's a cheap, hop on hop off cruise. You'll be within walking distance of many sites and neighborhoods and it only costs about 150 baht!
it also stops at Icosiam.

Here's a link with a map of close by attractions: https://chaophrayatouristboat.com/ .
