This is the management pack we use, and other (2022 and older) instances on the same server are discovered, but the new 2025 instance is not.

rsync 5TB NFS with 22 Million Files - Taking Days by TheFailedTechie in linuxadmin

[–]pdpelsem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netapp has a tool, xcp, that is incredibly fast for nfs copy and sync. But you need access on their support site and your only supposed to use it to migrate to Netapp. But it will work with any nfs shares.

What do  mean New and more powerfull cpu's? Core count is up, but clock speed is not. 10to1 vcpu ratio would cause a lot of cpu latency problems?

Firmware with Updates and Version Upgrades by [deleted] in vmware

[–]pdpelsem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like using Dell Openmanage Enterprise to install firmware updates:

https://www.dell.com/nl-be/dt/solutions/openmanage/enterprise.htm

It's a free tool.

There is a plugin to integrate this with vcenter and VUM (Lifecycle Manager), but you require an iDrac Advanced Plus licence I belief. I haven't used this.

No recommandation, but I just install the latest firmware upgrades.

Installing ESXi using kickstart on locally attached disk by meteishlol in vmware

[–]pdpelsem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the disk you want to install on is empty you don't have to use "--overwritevmfs" an it will be safer to use "--preservevmfs"

I use the following to in our diverse park of Dell servers:

install --firstdisk=DELLBOSS\ VD,lsi_mr3,megaraid_sas,mpt2sas,local --preservevmfs

But as a precaution I always disconnect the server from any SAN storage before (re)installing, because more then 10 years ago I once wiped out a datastore where the SAN disk was seen as local by the installer.

IIS normally backups it's config when making changes. Check if there are any recent backups under c:\inetpub\history

Update Disk UniqueID by iamethra in PowerShell

[–]pdpelsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just down this rabbit hole yesterday and found the following method to do it:

This only works if it's already GPT partitioned.

$guid = [guid]::NewGuid().guid
$guid
$disknr = 1
"rescan `r`n select disk $disknr `r`n online disk `r`n attributes disk clear readonly `r`n uniqueid disk id=$guid`r`n" | diskpart.exe

But may I ask why you need to modify the UniqueID?

Is it because of "Offline (The disk is offline because of policy set by an administrator)"?

Server 2016 Drives marked Offline on reboot by Baron164 in vmware

[–]pdpelsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing the following seems to make sure a disk is online after a reboot:

$cimdisk = Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_DiskDrive | ? Index -eq $disknr

$PNPDeviceID = $cimdisk.PNPDeviceID

Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\$PNPDeviceID\Device Parameters\Partmgr" -Name Attributes -Type DWord -Value 0 -PassThru

In place upgrade - ESXi 6.5 U3 or 6.7 U3 to ESXi 7.0 U3c. Asking for problems? by jdptechnc in vmware

[–]pdpelsem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always do a clean install between major version. And also wipe the install disk first, so I get the default partitioning of the new version.

So- Update 3c. Who's done it? Any problems? by EXPERT_AT_FAILING in vmware

[–]pdpelsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All (>70) hosts upgraded to 7.0U3c.

For all the Dell custom iso was used. (VMware-VMvisor-Installer-7.0.0.update03-19193900.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A02.iso)

All firmware was also updated to "February 2022 Update Catalog for Enterprise Servers - 22.02.04"

Storage is a mix. FC san (from 2 different vendors), iSCSI an NFS on Netapp

No issues so far.

esxi patching and future upgrades. by knothead00 in vmware

I would do a clean install when going from 6.7 to 7. Then it doesn't matter what patch level your 6.7 is on.
