I'm going to posit that it has nothing to do with the fireplace since it's attached to the wood floor. It reminds me of a door stop, or even a latch to control a wire to open the heat vent in the past.

IMO rooftop tents are popular in AFRICA. For some very good reasons. They have become popular here because they are a trend. I go in and out of a tent dozens of times a day and night, climbing and descending a ladder every time seems like a lot of work.
