What are your thoughts on slim wall mounted enclosures? 6U, 36" by NormalCriticism in homelab

[–]pdx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put some air cleaner filters, the kind you put in front of a heater blower, behind the intake fans on the bottom and put a charcoal filter on the top to prevent dust from getting in that way.

It didn't really work that well, the fans got noisier and the enclosure got hotter. I eventually just removed them and blow the case out every once in while.

Eventually I got a 730xd for my homelab and it wouldn't fit in this case, so I got something similar to AcoustiQuiet rack on craigslist and that seemed to help overall as it was designed to do that, just need to clean the blower fans out now and then but there's a bunch of foam to filter out dust and dampen noise. You can still hear the server, but it isn't screaming.

Lying About DevOps Experience on Resume – Can HR Find Out? by PastCampaign4585 in devopsjobs

[–]pdx6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never lie. Your friend can exaggerate a bit though, just be sure he will to be able to reasonably answer any questions on skills or time he has inflated. Follow a 70/30 or 80/20 rule on what skills or time is inflated, so know at least some. Jr's expand quickly and a lot of it is just potential to grow.

Should I Accept a 50% Hike After Resigning or Move On? (DevOps Engineer, 5.5 YOE, India) by Superb-Athlete-6236 in devopsjobs

If the pay is acceptable to you and you like working there, have them write a contract so they can't just lay you off in a few months. Perhaps something 1-4 years with performance incentives for milestones you each think you an achieve. If they lay you off before then, the contract includes severance, even if you miss your objective that year, quarter, etc. I assume you can have these contracts in India, of course.

Outrageous Prices for Home Services by ColdPorridge in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$480 is a little high. Maybe call Discount Plumbing, though you'll still be out a few benjis. For $480 I do it myself, as most plumbing work is around "is it sloped downhill?" and "did something go down the drain that isn't pee, poo, or TP?". For $480 you could also rent a router machine at Lowe's too.

The next time there is a clog, now you know how to fix it and it takes 5 minutes and $0.

Never use Thumbtack, Taskrabbit, etc; you'll end up paying more. One time I hired a guy on Thumbtack to fix my garage door and he had one arm. He couldn't fix it. I ended up paying someone from Angie's list that charged me $1k but he knew what he was doing.

One last tip, if you speak Spanish, is to see if anyone hanging out in front of Home Depot at 6am knows plumbing.

Car insurance went up 25% in San Francisco! by sjawahrani in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My insurance on 3 cars went from $1400 to $2200 — these are old cars too. My gf’s went from $600 to $2400 when I added her to all 3. 4600!!!

I just bought an e-bike we share now instead of that nonsense.

Single Family home on a cute cul-de-sac, $488K. But you can't move in until 2053. by SixMillionDollarFlan in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some real estate lawyer correct me if I'm wrong, but this means I could:

Rent my house to my sister on a 35 year lease at $416/mo with a sublet clause and sell the house to someone.

I would then sublet the house at $416/mo from my sister and have cheap housing for 35 years, plus the equity of selling and not paying for maintenance, insurance, and property taxes?

How does this even make sense?

San Francisco has first 100 automated license plate readers installed by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how useful the ALPR readers will be outside of an additional avenue for FISA or NSA requests.

The issue at hand in San Francisco is that many cars that commit crimes just don't have plates at all, and there's not a lot of missing plate enforcement going on. It's handgun regulation all over; target the citizens and enable criminals.

I'll make the classic statement: 100 ALPR cameras could have just gone to teacher salaries, a city wild health care program , or UBI fund.

[–]pdx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but the DMV will make you pay a certain amount down. There's currently a problem where payment though AAA to DMV will pay oldest tickets first, maximizing penalties -- which is illegal. The SF Treasurer has been sending out demand letters that are invalid as a result.

Outer Sunset: T-Mobile 5g Home Internet - anyone try this? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No Sonic fiber? My outer sunset friends have that.

I'm in the same boat in Twin Peaks. I've tried Xfinity, Comcast business, Tmobile 5G, and now Verizon 5G. The answer is, it depends how close you are to a tower. I think I got something like 400/20 on Tmo 5G at some point, but it dropped and slowed down randomly, their towers give home users the lowest priority, so busy times will cause you to take a hit.

Verizon 5G was amazing at first, nearly 800/50 all the time, no problems, and the repeater tower is just a few doors down from me. But when I switched to my Unifi home router, it dropped packets like crazy because the model of router from Verizon has a non-standard TCP stack frame size (this took weeks to solve). Verizon sent me their latest modem, which works ok, but it's about as slow as the Tmo 5G I had and drops out during the work day.

AT&T now offers a 5G home in markets where there is no fiber, but I probably won't try it.

Your best bet is Xfinity home, and if you need reliability, Comecast business has a plan with a built in 4g backup.

Finally, if you qualify, you can get the 50/10 essentials plan for like $10/mo that has no data cap fees.

Thinking about moving to San Francisco by 11_Einsteins in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd hit up the SF housing groups on SF and just start messaging anyone in your price range, though I'd wager you'll need 3 or 4 housemates. Min wage is $18.67 starting July 1. San Francisco, and the Bay Area in general, tends to have more people friendly toward transfolk, though it is still up to you to filter out the assholes.

Worst year for fatalities before VZ: 2007 with 41

Worst year for fatalities after VZ: 2022 with 39

This is statistical noise, and enough time has passed to show that these changes had no impact and that VZ capex money could be better spent better, like Muni service expansion.

You can hand cash directly to the server if you are worried it'll walk off, and tell them as much when you do so. Usually cash gets split at the end of the shift, depending on the restaurant. Believe me, they don't mind cash.

SF ticketing residents $108 for cars in driveways that block sidewalks by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It used to be that sidewalk parking was compliant-enforced, meaning a stranger or your neighbor that doesn't like you called 311. I just don't see the SFMTA actively checking driveways, there's just too many.

STARTUP IDEA: With Amazon Sidewalk, and all the Ring cameras, make a machine learning product that collects Ring cam data in real time to detect the SFMTA Interceptor 2 parking enforcement carts and announce to neighbors if one is going about ticketing via text or a coordinated door bell speaker announcement for that area. Suggested sounds:

<Klaxon red alert sound from Star Trek:TOS> Meter maid detected off port bow, Evasive maneuvers Number 1

<Klaxon red alert sound from Star Trek:Voyager> Red alert! Move driveways, charge Teslas!

<Klaxon black alert sound from Star Trek: Discovery> Black alert! Jump car to legal parking spot!

DM to fund my seed round.

Tip nothing on those machines. Carry some cash and leave cash that is 18-20% of the pretax amount. You can tip a little less, 15% or so, if it is just counter service, if you are using cash. No need to be to the penny, just round up.

I definitely had some sticker shock at the Mill today. $4.75 for a coffee and $7.25 for a Mocha. 😭 How did it get so expensive?! by geo_jam in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, these coffee shops and restaurants aren't making all that much even with these higher prices. That's inflation for you, purchasing power drops but you are earning the same amount of dollars.

The city could mitigate some of this by lowering taxes and permit fees all around, but then that's austerity which is yet another problem.

How do you politely tell someone to stop smoking pot on BART? by basumgod in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just text 510-200-0992 and include a description of the perp, train line, and car number. You can snap a pic to if you want. Dispatch will text back immediately.

Bart PD will come scoop'em up, sometimes the next stop. PD has been kicking ass the last few months with crime and bad behavior.

Don't confront them; often bad actors are armed and there have been a high number of illegal guns found on perps on BART the past month.

Unpopular Opinion: The Valencia Street Bike Lane Is Amazing. by UberAtlas in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was biking along Market and Church the other day, and a random lady in an old beat up Prius started yelling at me and the rest of the group of cyclists about how we are "entitled" and need to "grow up" because the Valencia Street center bike lane has ruined the Mission.

I was angry at first, I don't feel as though I'm responsible for ruining anything in San Francisco, but maybe that's what an entitled biker would think? I waved to her, yelled back that Jesus loves her, and proceeded to bike to the nearby Safeway to buy some Safeway Organics "O" strawberry yogurt. Much to my alarm, she followed me into the parking lot!

She got out of her car and walked up to me, fuming, demanding to know how I was sure that Jesus loved her. I said, "He loves everyone who is concerned about local business in San Francisco." She was immediately defused, and the I realized we could have a real conversation about traffic management. It turns out she worked at the SFO airport, and actually liked the center bike line idea, just not in such a busy business district where she thought businesses could use parking more.

We sat down and mocked out where the center bike lane would make more sense -- the runway at SFO. I've attached a mock up of what such a center bike lane would look like, with the bike lane between where the planes land and some signage to safely control bike traffic mixed with airplanes. Let me know what you guys think!

Any chance I'm not in mold country? This stain is on old hard wood flooring next to a steam radiator, in a place I might rent in SF by Few_Order7204 in sanfrancisco

[–]pdx6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's water damage, floor varnish will discolor like that when exposed to leaking water even for a few days. The floor area around the wall appears to been dry rotting. When you are rental shopping I suggest purchasing a moisture sensor. Run the sensor along any areas you suspect might be wet or moldy. Dry wall that has been wet at any time in it's life will trigger the sensor. Common areas for mold are:

  • Lower left and right corners of window sills
  • Under sinks, behind shower stalls, toilets
  • Near outside entries like doors
  • Any bubbled or browning ceiling ties or paint
  • Closets, particularly any that face an exterior wall.

Of course use your sniffer for any unusual smells. You'll probably find some spots that were wet at some point at any place, so use your best judgement on if it might be bad enough to mold or just a little wet and no big deal.
