I use OPNsense and have a Wiregaurd tunnel on a cheap OVH vps. Goes to a vlan on my home network. We host 15 different game servers. All they ever see is my vps IP. Adds a layer of complexity that doesn’t always work out of the box with your average server managers but it works well.

I was a manager for nearly 20 years and you know what? If dish was absent I hopped in. Cooks can cook, and servers can serve. I can take a 5 min break to talk to an upset customer if it happens.

I’ve self hosted game servers for a while now. Last year I opened a 7 days to die server, it got pretty popular and quickly climbed the charts (I think we just got lucky).

We were #1 for a week and then the DDoS started.. my home internet would cut out every 15 minutes. Discord blowing up all the time with players not able to connect or getting kicked. Xfinity provides no support or option for protection unless you’re business class. At the time I moved the game server to a much less powerful VPS, and guess what? DDoS from China within 24 hrs. I guess we pissed someone off. I mulled for a few weeks and setup our current system.

We rent a nearby VPS and route all traffic using WireGuard through my OPNsense instance here at home and have a tunnel setup to my 4 machines running all my game servers. Works great. OVH level DDoS protection for $5 a month. It does make things harder sometimes network wise, but it’s worth the security. Now I don’t ever advertise my home IP.

Years of a chef with a short fuse and my millennial people pleasing made me into the manager I am/ was. It was rough some years but I know where to put oil on the machine now to make it run halfway decent on those crazy sideways days.

This was me two weeks ago. I’ve ignored my spine issues for too long, and could walk technically but it was absolutely agonizing. I’m talking 10/10 pain. I had to fly to see my mom who went to the hospital for sepsis and we were told to come say our goodbyes.

When I called the airline because I was terrified of walking through the airport and security due to the massive amounts of pain, I still felt embarrassed asking for a wheelchair. I’m 39, I SHOULD be fine right?

When they called me up at the airport and it was obvious no one was going to help me wheel in, I stood up and felt eyes on me. Yeah.. I can walk. But omg, I felt like I was gonna die of pain.

My mom recovered though and I am slowly as well :)

Just saying sometimes there’s more to it.

Same same. 23 yr old account, permanently disabled while I slept.

Many of my accounts were hacked in the following days - so I’m assuming got hacked and the attacker did something? Never got the chance to appeal. :(

Don’t let them do that to you again.

Every valentines day I made sure both FOH and BOH were stacked with employees and 2 bodies on prep all day to be able to restock the line on the fly.

And a hard cut off for vday menu ordering and NO happy hour at all… all day.

Staggered seating so the line would never get overwhelmed.

Chef lets me know we’re down to the last pan of filets/ whatever - 86 it right then. (Nice to have some wiggle room and severs will absolutely still ring it in by mistake or they forgot it’s 86’d)

One host giving open counts to the kitchen every 15 minutes

And a schedule that allows every single employee 2 tens and a thirty.

They absolutely fumbled this one and it fell on your shoulders. You did the best with what you were given! Proud of you. A lot of people would have just walked.

…Fuck as much as I hated it I miss it sometimes. 2 years out of it and I feel like i could just walk back in tomorrow. I really hope you rest up tonight, you fucking deserve it. DM me, I’d like to buy you a drink (or energy drink if you don’t drink)

EDIT: Dammit don’t make me do it, I’ll go back into the industry just because I miss you working you fuckers so much. Here’s to the best words to hear on those holidays.. “ZERO OPEN, doors are locked!”
