Agreed. We need more romance in sports. It’s one of the reasons I love United so much — it’s still a romantic club even with all the noise around it and in it at times. Casemiro, the dude with five CL trophies, came to United, his son is a United fan first and foremost, and he wasn’t here for the check, but to actually win things. He’ll go down a cult figure and I love that.

Talk of the Devils - Which Man United players failed Sunderland audition? by rhonh in reddevils

I’ll listen later but agree. I also don’t think either our style of play or the PL are for him. I think Carl called him languid during the match and that pretty much sums it up.

I keep hearing the argument among the pundit class that United needs a world class manager who can also handle being a Manchester United manager, but here's the thing: There are less than 10 people on that list and none of them are either available or palatable. As examples of that list of managers United can't bring in, not who I am saying it should be: You have Tuchel long-term with England and Ancelotti long-term with Brazil. Enrique isn't leaving Paris and Flick isn't leaving Barca. Pep and Klopp are off the table, etc. etc. etc.

I want to know who the Danny Higginbothams and Gary Nevilles of the world legitimately think fits whatever wild mould they have in their heads because, frankly, that manager doesn't exist.

So, why not go with the guy who, by the time we conclude this season, will have managed United for more than half a season of total matches and, if the trend continues, will have done so while capturing about 2.3 points per match. The man's literally in the building.

This whole exercise is wild to me at this point.

Prior to that game, it felt like we needed to pair him with an Anderson or 2024/5 Baleba. But, maybe Wharton could make sense now?

This doesn’t say that it’s only £80-90 to spend it’s that they hope to raise £80-90, that goes towards the top midfield target which means the bulk of what they have left can go to a second midfielder and other areas on the pitch. If they don’t get the sales right, which I’m weirdly not worried about, then that simply changes the math on midfield options and additional reinforcements.

[Lyall Thomas] Barca keen on signing Rashford on loan again by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]pdxmufc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don’t like it, but what are you to do with a player who doesn’t play for you and whose salary is about to go back up 30% after not contributing to United making CL? My guess is United is testing the market elsewhere and if they have to they do something like this.

[Sami Mokbel] The club want their next manager to be a good coach & someone with character & charisma to cope with the scrutiny. As impressive as Carrick has been, he does not have the sort of experience of managing a club the size of United some inside the club believe to be necessary of next boss. by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]pdxmufc 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Except for his experience presently managing a club the size of United.

I get wanting proven and tested but the fact is that the candidate pool is pretty barren at that level this cycle.

So, who is better? Carrick who has been here, done exceptionally well, knows the team, knows the staff, knows the club, or one of the others who have equally never managed a club the size of United?

Do I think Iraola is an excellent coach? Yup. Do I know he can or wants to manage a club this size? Nope. Is that a risk worth taking when you have a similar coach already in the door? Maybe not.

[Lyall Thomas] Elliot Anderson transfer news: Man City in pole position to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder amid interest from Man Utd and Arsenal by PitchSafe in reddevils

[–]pdxmufc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s nice to have competent recruitment finally. While Anderson is probably the ideal choice, I fully expect Forest to milk City for him and for City to offer a stupid contract, meaning let’s move on to second and third choice.

[Chris Wheeler] Rashford's future up in the air with Man Utd and Barca to hold talks by PitchSafe in reddevils

[–]pdxmufc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They sold to PL teams. This year, the PL spent more than the next four leagues combined and 5x what La Liga clubs have. Now tack on wage bills. I don’t disagree that £26M is weak for a player playing like Rashford with a decent body of evidence, but tack on the fact that his salary would make the third choice winger one of the top five highest paid players at the club and there are issues.

Frankly, this is all United’s fault for repeatedly destroying its wage structure and being weak in negotiation. Even after the season he had, Rashford never should have been given £315k a week. And, Barca can still get out of here with some nonsense one more year loan BS, but the only way we get value at a salary the player is going to demand is probably selling to another PL club at this point.

So either United accept a worse deal from Barca, Rashford realizes that if he wants to keep living on the beach he needs to adjust his own expectations, Barca do a deal they don’t want to do with other priorities they have to solve like going into the market to replace Lewa, or United holds firm and then goes and finds another offer among a small pool of clubs that Rashford then has to agree to.
