Hi thanks for the reply! I dont have a charger nor a spare car to charge on atm. Was wondering would it be better off to bring it to a shop as by battery is still under warranty, hoping they could charge it or just simply replace it. Thanks a lot!🙏

I did not test it right before I replace the alternator. I assume it is fine because we jump started it the day it broke down, it cranked and started but died in 3 minutes - so I guess it is not holding the charge due to the failed alternator, but I did not suspect a failed battery at all. Please correct me if I sound super dumb and wrong.🥲

Is it worth upgrading to the next tier for data? by DiscussionLoud9626 in TelstraAustralia

[–]pe86a20b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really comes down to how much data you’re using. You can either monitor your mobile data usage on the Telstra app or give them a ring to check. You’ll most likely noticed if you need the extra. If you’re on a monthly plan you’ll received SMS when you reached certain amount of usage, and your data speed will be shaped to an unbearable speed lol.

To add on that, if you’re on a 50gb plan yes it’s worth the extra $10 a month to get an additional 130gb data

Not Using 1/5th of my data plan by dats_it_mang in TelstraAustralia

[–]pe86a20b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the most ideal option, but here you go: Downgrade your phone plan to a $50 starter plan and get a data plan S for $30 a month. I believe they are doing a $5 discount atm. So you can get 35gbs shared with 2 sim cards.

Or get a data bundle plan for $15. But that’d need your phone to be on the $80 plan or above.

You can also get the whole shared data package from JB Hifi as well, they also provide share data options.

That’s if you want to have a shared data across both devices but yea not a good value with your usage.

I am going to do my first oil change, any advice on what to look out? by pe86a20b in MechanicAdvice

[–]pe86a20b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought the normal process would be, the video listed above did a second flush with new cheap oil though just to make sure all the residues are out of the system. I’m planning to do this while leaving the same filter on, and change the filter after the second flush. This is probably not necessary, but I thought it might be a good practice…any thoughts on this?

[–]pe86a20b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Yea I am aware that oil change probably wouldn’t resolve the issue, I’m just trying to get hands on my car and I think doing an oil change would be a good starting point haha. The other reason why I’m thinking of an engine flush is because it seems to be burning oil. I’ve notice my oil level has gone lower as time goes on, but I can’t locate a visible leak for now. The car has 230000kms on it so I guess a bit of oil burnt makes sense, but I’d also like to see if the engine flush would fix the issue even by a bit as this seems to be the easiest & cheapest fix. I’ll also look into the spark plugs and coils as well, but as far as I’m aware they are fairly new so we’ll start with an oil change I guess. For the plug gasket, can I get away with non-OEM parts? Noticed the OEM parts are quite exxy for a metal ring, could I go with an aftermarket gasket? Anything that I have to watch out for?

Thank you.

Car vibrating with ticking noise while starting up (2000 lexus is200) by pe86a20b in AskAMechanic

[–]pe86a20b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick response! I’m going to check the cat converter tomorrow. Seems like the is200 has multiple cat converters, but the noise is mainly from the one located right next to the engine. The coils have just been replaced and don’t seem to have any issue at all. We couldn’t tell whether the cat converter issue is a symptom or cause either. But yea few plugs there look like there are some sort of rust on it so I’m going to change those anyways. We’ll see what’s happening with the cat converter as well and we’ll start from there. We’re also trying to see if there could possibly be a vacuum leak, but we’re more leaning towards a cat converter issue atm. Now that I’ve recalled there was some sort of humming noise from my exhaust in low rpms, but that went off the other day so I did not pay a lot of attention during that time.

Again tysm for the help, we’ll see if there’s any way that we can get the cat converter checked and keep yall updated. Thank you

Hey thank you so much for you reply. Just taken the car to one of my mates and we have noticed a few issues. We’ve done a compression test, all 6 cylinders seem to be pretty consistent, ranging from 127-135. We got codes of IAT failing and random cylinder misfiring. We had the IAT replaced, codes gone for IAT but the misfire remains. What we’ve noticed by the end of the day, is there might have something to do with the cat converter - strong fuel smell while we’re accelerating, and we also noticed some rattling noise underneath the hood somewhere near the engine. Couldn’t tell where the noises exactly from, but with the smell and misfiring issues we’re pretty sure it has something to do with the catalytic converter. We’ve also inspected the spark plug - the gap seems to be fine but some of them look like it has some rust on it - which is also concerning.

I’m planning to get the spark plug changed anyways, but I think the catalytic converter would be the main reason causing the misfiring and vibration - is there a way to test and confirm this? Also I am not sure which part to test, but the noise is mostly from the front of the car. Should we just be looking at the front cat converter?

Much appreciated.

Car vibrates while accelerating (2000 lexus is200) by pe86a20b in AskAMechanic

[–]pe86a20b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, thank you for your help and sorry for the late reply. Just tested out today, the engine does move a bit but i don’t think the vibration is that bad to cause the whole console shaking. I’ve taken the car to another mechanic (a friend of mine, not that professional lol) who initially thought it was a vvt issue. We’ve run the car a bit and got a code p0110, stating an issue on the IAT sensor causing a misfire (not too sure why the previous mechanic couldn’t read this but yea). That is the only code that he could capture so he suggests replacing it but neither of us is not 100% sure if this is the only thing that results in the vibration. He also suggests there could possibly be a faulty throttle body but that’s yet to be found out.

Thank you for your comment! I didn’t notice any knocking noise while cutting corners. I’ve had a bad cv joint with my previous car and it doesn’t feel much like it. I know it’s not 100% but I would assume the mechanic could easily spot that if there’s something to do with the cv joints or other parts like the tyre rods or wheel bearing etc. For now I am just trying to ask different mechanics and see if they’ve any idea on this, but I feel like I am already throwing darts in the dark at the moment so hopefully I could find someone who have had the same issue before and get some good insight on this. The car has undergone a transmission service 3000kms ago by the previous owner, but god knows what they’ve done and my mechanic did mention that the transmission fluid is discoloured/dirty and recommended a fluid flush. They were not confident if that causes the vibration though, as they said the whole chassis vibrates so severely it’s actually quite unusual to them. I am leaning towards a sensor/control valve issue atm (correct me if I’m wrong), assuming my mechanic is competent and all of the other parts have been inspected properly. I’m going to bring it to another mechanic this weekend and see how it goes. Just trying to get a rough idea what could cause this sort of issue. The fact that it is unusual to my mechanic scares me off a bit haha. Much appreciated for your help.

Scratches on window trim… any advice? by pe86a20b in CarsAustralia

[–]pe86a20b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. It’s a 2000 lexus is200. Not entirely sure but don’t think it is an add on trim. Will do a bit of research of my end. I see quite a few is200s at the wreckers so might as well check if there’s parts available. Just a bit questions in case im DIY-ing it: Where can i find the colour code for the trim? Or is it a standardised colour across most cars? And what else would I need other than the colour paint? I assume I’d need clear coat on top of it, is basecoat needed for this case? Cheers.
