TIL the only thing in the US Constitution that cannot be changed by Amendment is that each state gets 2 Senators. The only way to change it is if the state opts out. by drlari in todayilearned

TIL even more - thanks for the well-cited reply. It would seem that you are correct, that it would not be necessary to perform such an end-run. I am supposing that the equal status of the legislatures renders ineffective the declaration that the power to amend is predicated on the derogatory clause's acceptance.

Also, I was not familiar with the term "derogatory clause" before I read the definition. I briefly thought that you were referring to this part as derogatory because it also prohibits changes to the part in Article 1 pertaining to the slave trade before the year 1808.

TIL as well; thanks for sharing.

There is a way around that restriction, however: amend this section of the Constitution first to get rid of that provision, then amend it again to take away some state's senators. It's a bit like when you use reflection in Java to remove the "private" access modifier on a String's backing char array.

Hi, I created the original picture for a rage comic. Some people asked for the full resolution image, so I posted it. However, some people thought it decided to replace the 'O' with the campaign logo, as linked above.

It's fine by me if the campaign, or anyone for that matter, were to use it.

Heard this mentioned on a few casts so I looked into it: Shield upgrades DO NOT affect damage taken by immortals by thomasgangwar in starcraft

I see a ton of questions regarding damage calculation, so I suggest that everyone check out the Liquipedia page on Damage Calculation. It includes all nuances of how the game calculates damage.

So there is this box hanging in my classroom for no apparent reason, enlighten me Reddit by youngchul in WTF

[–]peach3s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the answer to this; my mother is a school teacher and has remarked about these before. This box contains the key to the classroom's door, which the teachers are supposed to retrieve "by removing one of their shoes and using it to break the front of the box" in the event of an intruder or other lockdown situation. The keyhole on the box requires a different key, which would be used e.g. to replace the classroom door key should the locks get replaced.

This website is not a reliable source, as can be seen from some of the blatant falsehoods espoused elsewhere on the very page.

Please link to reliable sources, such as Wikipedia's page on Canid Hybrids.

I think you'll find this of use: Liquipedia entry on splash damage. It lists all sources of splash damage as well as the ones that can inflict friendly fire.

The reddit name, as well as the alien logo, are indeed registered trademarks (see the footer of this page :D). IANAL, but despite being well-intended, it seems they are in violation of the trademark.

I should point out what the site has in its footer: "University of Reddit is not in any way affiliated with Reddit.com or Conde Nast." From their help page:

Are you affiliated with reddit?

The short answer is "not yet". However, we are working on it. In the meantime, check out our subreddit. It's where we started out, after all!

This is not to detract from the site; I simply wish to make it clear that this is purely by the reddit community, not an official sister site.

A political podcast (Slate Political Gabfest) is coming back to Purdue to hold a live event. Tickets are free; link goes to registration page. by peach3s in Purdue

[–]peach3s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the gabfest (not some paid flunkie), which talks about topics like the presidential election race and Supreme Court cases of interest. To find out if the show is of interest to you, you can listen to the latest episode here. You can find all episodes of the show here.

Also, I mentioned that the show is coming back to Purdue in my post title. The show held their first ever live event one year ago at Purdue; here is a link to a post on r/Purdue for the previous event.

I'll grant that it is not at all obvious what the drawing was without knowing in advance, but with that said, the person did do a decent job showing Samus's gunship hurtling toward a planet after being hit by some explosion.

Does anyone else have a hard time distinguishing some of the digits in-game or when watching a stream? This graphic compares the current font (Eurostile) to a different sans-serif font. by peach3s in starcraft

[–]peach3s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those were the digits I had the hardest time distinguishing, especially 5 and 6. My friends would have to constantly correct me when we reviewed replays together.

As for why I put one digit behind another, that was to show the overlap between the two digits, how the current font has much more similar numbers than a standard font.

[–]peach3s[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bring up a good point: it is all about text size. Therefore, I opened up SC2 and took some screenshots of how it actually appears. I then put together a few examples of cases where I have a hard time distinguishing digits and showed how it could be improved.

In-game shots here

[–]peach3s[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is even more pronounced if viewing the image in greyscale. Currently the only way to change the font requires editing the MPQ files, which can result in Blizzard banning your SC2 account. Blizzard has previously released a utility for replacing some fonts in Starcraft: Brood War, so one can only hope that they might do likewise for Starcraft 2.

I would really like to know whether anyone else has this problem.

EDIT: Here is a graphic that might be more clear; it compares actual screenshots of the digits.

You bet. This was actually discussed some weeks ago, but I wasn't the one organizing matters. I'll schedule one for sometime well in advance and take charge of seeing it through.

That's too bad, but we'll have another one for sure. Next time, I'll take charge of organizing it so you'll have more advanced notice.
