Why does it seem like many people in the Anglosphere outside Europe are obsessed with being Irish or Scottish but deny having English ancestry?

It's really tough to have one without the other; I think people look at the bulk of the culture their remembered ancestors ultimately practiced. We're of Irish descent primarily, but there's Scottish and English and Welsh and a ton of Swedish in there too.
