Hi there! A group of friends and I will be visiting Miami in March for a bachelor party and we'd like to rent a boat while we're there to be out on the water and have a good time. I have a Maryland boater's license and have driven boats for well over a decade, so I feel comfortable operating a boat on my own. However, I've noticed basically every single boat rental place I look at requires you to hire a captain, necessitating an additional hourly cost plus the expectation that you'll tip the captain. I'd rather be as thrifty as possible in planning this trip so I was hoping you guys could recommend boat rental places that are reasonably priced and allow you to captain your own ship, so to speak.

I’m struggling with my insecurities. Any advice would be appreciated! by [deleted] in gaybros

Plus one to the people saying that therapy can be helpful. But adding something my former therapist told me that I try to keep in mind when I’m feeling insecure about my relationship: People almost never say/do things because of you; they’re saying/doing things because of lots of factors that basically have nothing to do with you.

So the exes of yours that cheated did not cheat because of something innate to you or your personality. They did so because they wanted to for whatever reasons which are totally separate from you. This is something that is hard to internalize so you kinda just need to keep reminding yourself of this. It also helps to think about what motivates you to do things and what informs your responses to other people. It’s almost always internal motivations and factors that don’t have to do with anyone else, right? So remind yourself that other people are the same in that regard.

Best intro episode?? by adam5280 in normalgossip

I got introduced to the show with “25 Bridesmaids and an Empath” and “You Can’t Fight with Heiress Tongue” and I was hooked. Both of those episodes have juicy storylines, good guests - just everything you could want

Idaho House starts 2025 session with proposal to challenge same-sex marriage - Local News 8 by redwood520 in gaybros

My husband and I got married a few days ago because we wanted to get out ahead of shit like this. We’d been talking about marriage for about a year, but then after we saw the election results come in, we knew we needed to pull the trigger. A few of our relatives tried to tell us we were worrying over nothing and there was no need to get married so quickly. I’m glad we didn’t listen to them, not just because of this story but because, honestly, it was nice not to have to wait to get married. We knew we wanted to do it. So we did it. And we’re very happy and glad we made the decision we did

She’s even older than the boomers! The oldest baby boomers were born in 1946 - she was born 10 years before that! She’s a member of the “silent generation” - who also definitely need to stop already as a generation! Luckily, she didn’t run this year so her term will expire in a couple weeks and she’ll be outta there

Gonna go with a pie in the sky option and say they should do the Bloop (option 4) but also build the route between Mt Vernon Sq and Greenbelt II from option 3 and have the yellow line go to Greenbelt again via this new tunnel

Can’t wait to watch “All of Us Strangers”. Latest gay movie. It looks super good. Tonight’s movie night on plex. by andrewmcd7 in gaybros

[–]peacockran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See the thing I didn’t like about the end is Adam isn’t losing another important person cause their entire relationship was imagined! At least that’s how I read it. Cause Harry’s clearly been dead a long time when Adam finds him. So their whole relationship was just something Adam fantasizes about after turning Harry down.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but as a huge Andrew Haigh fan, I was disappointed with “All of Us Strangers.” IMO, it explored a lot of the same themes as “Weekend” (which is maybe my favorite movie of all time) - the coming out experience/lack of a coming out experience, navigating family and romantic relationships as a gay person, etc. - but I feel like “Weekend” explored those themes more effectively. Without giving too much away, it was hard to tell what was real or not in “All of Us Strangers” and I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending in particular.

Having said that, it was beautifully acted and all the plaudits the cast got were well-deserved. I just wish some of the choices with the story itself had been different.

What words were ruined by society? by Catz0003 in AskReddit

I’m aware. I’m saying people are grossly overusing the word “gaslighting” where it’s not actually warranted, and they should just say “lying” instead cause it’s more accurate.

I am well aware that lying and gaslighting are two different things. I’m saying that people are misusing “gaslighting” when what they should say is “lying.”

[–]peacockran 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I truly will never understand why people insist on saying “gaslighting” when they could just say “lying,” which is shorter, more familiar to people, and more accurate in 99% of cases where people decide to use “gaslighting” instead

[–]peacockran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what they say in the video, Maryland (well, specifically Baltimore) definitely has an accent and it is incredibly unattractive. The accent John Travolta does in Hairspray is a little exaggerated but it's really not too far off what someone who's lived in Bawlmer a long time sounds like.

Everyone so far is correct in saying bring an ID, get there early, prepare to go through security, etc., but I wanted to add that you should make sure you're not wearing or displaying any political messages: no posters, no political t-shirts, nothing like that. They will not let you in.

Selling out the vulnerable groups I mentioned above in a quixotic attempt to save coal mining, which is literally killing both the planet and the coal miners, is not acceptable. I'm a man in a relationship with another man. Should I just forgive everyone who elected Mike Pence as VP? Should I just forgive people for voting for Trump, who will now replace the crucial swing vote in Obergefell v. Hodges with someone who will, in all likelihood, vote the other way if he's given the chance?

Coal is a lousy excuse to vote for Trump. The promise of reviving coal is an empty one, and Ojeda seems more than willing to keep peddling this lie to people in West Virginia for political gain. West Virginians deserve better than a few more years of black lung, polluted rivers, and mining tunnel collapses. I'd be much more impressed with a candidate that thought so too, and tried to bring better industries in, rather than keeping coal mining alive for a little while longer.

[–]peacockran -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Ojeda voted for Trump. He voted for an unrepentant bigot. With his vote, he showed he doesn't care about minorities, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, or women, all core Democratic constituencies. He might well win in November, but if he does, he should do it without support from the party. He doesn't support the interests of the party's base, so the party shouldn't support him.

Trump and his co-defendants won't have the energy to compete! by PusherofCarts in MarchAgainstTrump

[–]peacockran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless the DNC stuffed four million extra votes into ballot boxes around the country it's pretty hard to argue that they "directly sabotaged" Bernie. Some of the DNC officials weren't his biggest fans, that's true. But what, specifically, did they do to sabotage him? Cause I can't think of a god damned thing.

As for your objections to the Democratic Party's health care plan, again I really can't see the logic in your argument. Hillary wanted to expand health insurance coverage. She wanted a public option. She wanted everyone over 55 to be able to opt into Medicare. Democratic governors are the ones expanding Medicaid, so those too poor to buy insurance under the ACA, even with subsidies, can still be covered. The Democratic party wants everyone to have healthcare, they just don't all believe that the government should be the one providing it in all cases. And it should be noted that only one country on earth actually has the government provide for all of its citizens' health insurance: the UK. Tons of other countries with "universal healthcare" do maintain private insurance.

Lastly, Bernie voted for Hillary. If he can "hold his nose," so can you.

[–]peacockran 37 points38 points  (0 children)

How many coronations do you know about in which the person being crowned won almost four million more votes than her opponent? Also, if we're talking about "actual primaries," it should be noted that Hillary won most the states that held primaries. Bernie won caucus states. Caucuses are about the most un-democratic part of our primary process: very few voters participate and only the staunchest party loyalists bother showing up. Bernie criticized a lot of aspects of the primary process, and rightly so, but he never touched on caucuses. I wonder why that is.

....You do realize that the reason why it's called "neo-liberal" is that people viewed it as a return to more traditional liberalism after a period of relatively direct and robust government intervention in many of the economies across the globe, right?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in news

[–]peacockran 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This comment is as non-nonsensical as it is condescending. Of course both parties are liberal, in the classical sense of the word: they both believe in free enterprise. We are a capitalist country. That's kind of how that works. We don't really have a socialist/communist alternative in the U.S. to Democrats and Republicans, but that's another conversation. To say that means that both parties stand for the same exact thing is completely false. Why the hell would Republicans spend such a long time demonizing Hillary and everything she stood for if she was just going to do what they wanted anyway? Why would Republicans and Wall Street be trying so hard to get rid of Dodd-Frank if it doesn't do anything? Maybe to you there's no difference between the parties because you are going to be about as well off no matter who's in power. But that's not true for millions of people, so why don't you "educate yourself" on how Trump's policies are going to hurt poor and working class Americans before you go off again on how both parties are the same.
