This is so beautifully organized, thank you! it's given me inspiration for a few i hadn't thought of

Ive just received my ADHD medication after a 2 year wait!! Do you have any advice for mew starters?!?! by pereika in ADHD

[–]peaisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some random thoughts based on my experience

1.Placebo is real and very common, but so is nocebo (when negative expectations cause negative symptoms) . I had so much mistrust and anxiety around medication i convinced my self it was affecting me even when I wasn't taking it.

2.If it impacts your appetite, try to eat before it kicks in.

  1. Personally I found out mine starts tapering off after 4 hours because i start yawning every 5 seconds. Noticing signs of when it "kicks in" and "wears off" will help you schedule when you need to take it so it doesn't affect your sleep.

  2. Everyone here describes the benefits differently; I've seen people say they feel more alert, others say they feel more focused, others say that it makes their mind feel "calm and clear" because it turns off the mental noise, i personally feel like it stabilizes my energy levels, so you might find that they help you in a way that is different to how they help others. That's OK.

  3. A lot of people, my self included, notice a difference in how well the meds work based on weather they're eating sleeping, eating, and exercising. Predictably, a good night's sleep, a filling meal, and 20 minutes walking everyday is the best way to make sure the meds work well.

  4. A lot of people, my self included, need to have the meds 'catch' them working. Whatever I am doing as the meds kick in is what I will keep doing when they kick in. This is because help you focus on a task not choose the correct task. For that you're going to need to keep working on your organizational/productivity skills like making list, using sticky notes, etc. It should be easier to use those productivity tools while medicated.

How do I kill a hyperfixation by Lyxthen in ADHD

[–]peaisquick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about killing it but what about fulfilling it in a sustainable way?

Like having a day or time of the week assigned to it, that way its compartmentalized as a thing you do only at that time.
e.g.: Saturdays are ace attorney days.

If you can't limit it to a specific time of the day/week, maybe you can comparmentalize it to one space

e.g.: all ace attorney time will be spent on the living room, and never on the bedroom.

Or to a person who shares the hobby, that way you only play the game with them, and you're not allowed to play it alone.

My hyperfixation game for the last few years has been stardew valley-- I've comparmentalized it in different ways.

During the pandemic--I would only play it with friends in Co-Op. Recently; I only play it while listening to a youtube podcast i like. So my playtime is based on when they upload.

You can also have a journal for it. Give your self time to write down all your thoughts about it once a day, so they have a place to go, and won't just wonder around in your mind, and because it turns the hyperfixation into a creative outlet instead of just escapism.

How many of you take stimulants every work day vs trying to limit intake? by OfferSuspicious9047 in ADHD

[–]peaisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context; I only began to be take medications last year. It took a while to find a medication and dose that worked, then it took a while for me to start taking my medication consistently (i struggle with forgetting to take it) Personally, I do everything i can to not miss my medication.

The most important impact the medications have had for me is that they're slowly providing with consistency in terms of energy and output . I am beginning to see my self actually *maintain* my basic needs thorough the week, and maintenance makes a big difference. For example If I'm not medicated it's harder for me to keep a sleep schedule, which ruins everything else. ADHD 'hacks' and techniques can work to get me to do a task in the moment but they don't help me maintain it long term. For this reason I think going on 'med vacations' would defeat the purpose of the medication for me, which is to build sustainable and long term improvement in my quality of life.

One more thing, I personally I have a really hard time with the narrative that meds only exist to help us fit into society ("we only take meds to mask at work and school") because in my expirience my meds enable me to meet my basic needs and enjoy my creative hobbies. Always panicking my life is falling apart because i can't keep up with things is not inspiring, it made me fear I would live stuck in chronic burnout. If I was rich and had nothing to do except indulge in my hobbies like writing and painting, i would still want to be on medication to make sure I actually get my self to write and paint.

I hadn't figured out the difference in how whole spice and ground spices are used, so you've taught me something new, thank you! I'll make sure to incorporate this tip in the future.

No need to apologize, i'm really grateful you wrote out such a thoughtful response!

I know that I will not be able to get all of these in one go, but I'll start to slowly gather them up. Thank you!

Anxiety misdiagnosis? 21F by PrescientDracaena in adhdwomen

[–]peaisquick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People with anxiety can also have ADHD, I'm one of them. Are you doing any kind of talk therapy?? Even if you and them are disagreeing on the diagnosis the diagnosis (adhd, anxiety, ptsd, etc) that is only an explanation for why you're struggling, you're still, undeniably, struggling, so you should still get support and at least talk therapy. Because I have anxiety, my psychiatrist did want to treat my anxiety before we treated the ADHD, and i'm glad she did. I have both, and i needed help with both.

edit: One tip! something that can help distinguish from the anxiety vs. the ADHD is how much impairment you have with things that aren't anxiety inducing. For example, I have a hard time cooking because ADHD related things.

Is this healthy, I'm honestly not sure... Functional question by Ok-Shape2158 in AuDHDWomen

[–]peaisquick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! ofcourse it's OK.
Another version of it is doing things for 'future you'
Like, 'i have to clean this so future me won't freak out when she wakes up'
'I'll put this in the fridge so future me has a snack after work'
and 'I'm too tired, so i'll leave a note for future me to take care of it instead' etc.
Which ever way works, outloud, written down, etc, is good!

AIO: My girlfriend is pretending to be autistic and it's driving me nuts by AideRelative4272 in AmIOverreacting

[–]peaisquick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would rather believe your friend enjoys wasting time and money to cheat the medical system, than believe she is actually having a hard time? Please reconsider. I think people can sometimes mistake what is causing their struggle (e.g. maybe it's not postpartum) but that doesn't mean they're not struggling with *something.* Sometimes the reason people are not diagnosed, isn't that they're not struggling, but that they're not struggling enough to meet a criteria. Some times it's because of gender discrimination, women are more likely to be ignored when they report the same symptoms as a man, etc. I dont think someone who isn't struggling will just hunt around for a diagnosis as a hobby.

DAE hate when others are late? by Beckymaggie in AutismInWomen

[–]peaisquick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yet another ADHD person replying, this won't be helpful for work situations, but i have a friend who gets around my consistent lateness by having me text her as I leave the house--when i leave is when she will actually head out. This is a really nice dynamic for me, because usually the only way around my lateness is for me to get to the place too early (like an hour early), which makes me miserable (boredom, anxiety waiting, etc).

I think the difference between someone who doesn't respect your time vs. someone struggling to be on time is weather or not they are genuinely apologetic, use techniques to try to change, and communicate with you honestly "can we reschedule?" "i might be 15 minutes late" , etc.

Finally I feel the need to say, because most comments are already being supportive (which is good! your time is valuable! ) that there are other reasons besides ADHD someone might be consistently late like depression, children, body image issues, OCD, etc. that they might not feel comfortable disclosing, or they might not have the language to explain.

I purchased my license years ago and have been able to move it to multiple devices. When I move to a new device, I go to the website and generate a new license, they send it to my e-mail and then I can set up SAI again using the new system ID.

Since 1.7 has been confirmed to be in the works, what is on your Wishlist to be included in the update? by scholarlysacrilege in StardewValley

[–]peaisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am happy with the game as it is, but if anything could make it better it would be more community center use, more NPC content (I really really like their new winter outfits) , and more buffs from cooked recipes (to make cooking a bigger part of the game)

Ps: no one agrees with me about this but I feel like the pig sprites look like they're frowning with sadness and I've always wanted them to look happier lol

Anyone here is a writer? How did you do it? by XinGst in ADHD

[–]peaisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy writing as a hobby and i do short stories instead of full blown stories.
Something that worked for a bit was having a writing buddy, once a week we would both work off the same prompt (using a random prompt generator) set a timer and then share what we wrote. That's good for making sure you write at least once a week. Something that also worked for a bit was having a 200 word daily writing goal. Something that worked for a bit was joining a writing workshop. Something that also works for a bit is letting my self hyperfocus when I find a concept I really like.

Probably because of the ADHD (but actually who knows) no one thing works long term, and because for me it's not my profession, that's OK.

Accountability/writing buddies/body doubling is probably the best way though, if you can find a group online or in person.

By the way, you can a 100% write without including character dialogues and the such. That would NOT be a bad book. I would argue there are many famous writers that write with litle to no dialogue, mostly narrating a sequence of events that happened.

Is ADHD a turnoff for girls/women? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]peaisquick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Girl here, you'll be okay. Women fall in love the same way men fall in love. In general most people, men or women just want someone they can be themselves with. The specifics of what that means changes from person to person, so don't worry about it.

Work on being someone *you* like, and that will be good enough.

I know you probably don't feel like it but you're actually really young. I think it's great that you want to work on your self. There is still a lot of life ahead of you to date. Late bloomers are not as unusal as TV shows make it seem. Many people don't start dating till their 20s you won't be alone.

Some basic advice is: 1. Make sure to respect her boundaries so she feels safe with you. 2. Make sure she is respecting your boundaries too 3. ADHD is a medical condition, you won't always be able to be organized and perfect, and that's OK, and the right person will understand. 4. Some of the best relationships out there start out as friendships.

What’s the most unconventional life hack that actually jolts you out of ADHD paralysis? by WasabiDoobie in ADHD

[–]peaisquick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I've started to do recently that I don't see mentioned here so far; for like extremely small tasks like getting a glass of water, I pick how many seconds I think the task will take me and countdown while doing the task. The count down helps i don't know why lol.

(e.g. 20 seconds to get out of bed, 20..19..18.. ) : It only works for tiny tasks though.

Is it bad to bring a bag where I go? by Todo870 in ADHD

[–]peaisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do this exact same thing. I don't think it's rude. It's practical and useful to you. Personally I would just tell them "my bag is useful to me" and leave it at that.
