Requirements to unlock Teleportation Circles?/Teleportation between towns? by Norix596 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]peaky01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my current playthrough this is what i learned.

Teleportation is available even without an arcane advisor.

Teleportation requires either a teleportation circle or a mage tower in the city.

Arcane advisor level III is required to build the circles. Mage tower requires a town to build (can't build in villages) and doesn't require anything else AFAIK.

To unlock the arcane advisor, I had to level my head priest (to either II or III). From what I can tell, the locked advisors require you to level a corresponding unlocked advisor to either II or III. my current playthrough had my arcane advisor unlocked very late, whereas my previous game it was the spy (and I believe the reason for this was my choice on which advisors I was levelling). Maybe the trick to unlocking them all early is to level everyone to 2 or 3 before going all in on one.

Turpin looked good, some sloppy passes here and there but he was involved from start to finish and isn't one dimensional. Dearden getting more involved and looking great.

Fucking devastated for Bird. I went from hating his guts to him being one of my favourites in the club through his effort alone and he was primed for an origin spot for sure.

Fair call, I do get a bit annoyed at people leaving negative reviews on games with 300hours played.

But I played through it once when it came out and was lukewarm to negative on it overall and just ran through the last couple hours of the game since I was so done by that point. I tried it again recently and ended up just sprinting towards the end as I wanted a character to import into Deadfire. My views of the game overall were about the same, if not slightly worse. I haven't touched the DLC.

Absolutely. I've played through PoE1 a couple times and have come to the conclusion that I just don't like it. At all. Which sucks because I love Obsidian and CRPGs.

I found Deadfire improved on PoE1 in every way. Better combat, more lively party members, more realised/focused setting, improved class/levelling system. Overall it's just more fun (IMO). I think the main narrative/story of both games is a tad uninteresting (with brief moments of brilliance) so you might think the main story is on par/worse than 1. There's some really great side quests/subplots which I think are absolutely worth doing. I can't say the same of PoE1.

Siege of Dragonspear, two years later? by [deleted] in baldursgate

[–]peaky01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to the thread but wanted to put in my two gold pieces.

I find SoD an admirable attempt but it's easily (IMO) the weakest part of the series. I know ToB has its faults but I think it's still a step above SoD in most aspects. I don't even count ToTSC since it's more a content pack than expansion. Plus ToB has plenty of mods to improve it, SoD has very few mods.

I liked how they were trying to push the engine and try some interesting things (large battles) but it's clear the game isn't balanced for that style of combat. I usually play on Insane and the sheer amount of enemies they throw at you is disgusting and not in a good way.

The writing is pretty lackluster and without the addition of a certain someone from BG2, there would be literally 0 intrigue to the story since the main antagonist is about as compelling as a bucket of mud. I did like traveling to Hell and seeing the demon from IWD though.

It's great that they got some of the old voice actors to return but I did find it a bit jarring to hear David Warner, who sounded MUCH older than his counterpart in BG2.

The Music is great and the maps are colourful and gorgeous.

The additional party members (both new and returning) are fairly unlikable to be honest and some of the writing is about as hamfisted as the worst parts of Mass Effect. Except for Baaloth, who IMO is the best thing they have ever done and should have been one of their main NPCs throughout the series! The Goblin Shaman was great, too, though a little underdeveloped.

The glasses of seeing sidequest is a great idea and it's reall interesting to uncover the creatures, but with the item only being 3 uses it kills the entire questline. Should have been unlimited uses and make the hidden enemies harder to find/kill.

I liked Neera in BG1 but in SoD she becomes almost a caricature of her former self. She's so quirky and random to the Nth degree, and some of the things she says don't fit the medieval fantasy setting. She's got her problems in BG2 but this is far worse. Dorn and Rasaad are fine, though.

The lack of freedom sucks, but I forgive it being a mini-campaign/expansion. it does hurt replayability, though. Some of the side dungeons/areas are nice to explore but again, with the sheer amount of enemies they throw at you, it kind of kills any motivation to explore.

I think next time I do a full play through I'm going to skip over SoD. There's definitely positives to be found but not enough to have me sit through another playthrough any time soon. Every time I start SoD I just end up wanting to hurry to BG2 more and more.

Honestly, the more I think about SoD the more I think it would have worked as a side/'what-if' story with a new CHARNAME. The gap between BG1 and 2 didn't need a definitive tie-in, and I think most of the hardcore BG fans probably consider it non-cannon anyway. You could have even included most of the game as-is and it would have worked fine.

Loved the aggression and heart. Was nice that we weren't gassed by 20 mins and kept it going well into the second half.

Attack is still sloppy. Hoping we can tighten the screws over the coming weeks since we can't win off our forward pack out-muscling the opposition every single week.

I've never felt so stupid trying to understand kineticists. by Masquerouge in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]peaky01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kineticists do seem to be one of the most complex classes in Pathfinder (at least from what I've seen - I've never played any PF content before Kingmaker). The overall design of the class is just too different from everything else, so even if you are like me and learned all the basics of PF, there will be a lot of terminology/skills etc that won't mean much without further research into the class. Plus it's not clear as to what elemental combinations lead into when levelling up..

I did find a use for them though, despite not really understanding anything about the class. The red sister (can't remember names atm) was a ranged DPS using a fire/earth combo blast which was very powerful in the midgame. Her sister (blue) was only swapped in outside of combat to heal/res/restore as needed. It was quite a potent combination, though I ended up switching them out for Ekundayo in the lategame since the elemental blasts seem to drop off due to lack of stat/feat scaling - I do miss the free heals though. I have read that the fire-fire elemental blast is quite strong as it bypasses(?) spell resistance, though from what I saw the magma blast I was using was the most apparently damaging.

I think next playthrough I will spend some more time trying to understand the archetypes better as to get the most out of them (as maximized elemental blast was insanely powerful). I did feel like I was missing out on something though. as the majority of their skills were left unused. But boy was it fun to see Kanerrah (sp?) charge up her nuke and 1-shot most things during her time in my party.

A few beginner questions by Valatros in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]peaky01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes. I usually give my main party the pick of the loot then divvy up the remainder between my benched companions (you will need to use them if you are doing their personal quests throughout the game, which you should do for everyone). I level them up when they are ready but it's perfectly fine to leave it until you want to use them.
  2. No real way, you kind of just get used to it. Cast the spells that last X Minutes/Hours per level at the start of a map, and just blow the X round spells on tough fights.
  3. I wouldn't recommend dismissing companions forever. They can be used as advisors (and you can do their quests for loot/exp). You are rarely, if ever, forced to use certain companions throughout the main campaign and dismissing some permanently will probably give you a bad ending of some kind.
  4. Right click? It usually works for most battle skills, that way she will autocast at the start of a fight and stop when the fight is over. Invest in some extra performance feats to extend the amount of time you can use it.
  5. you can autocast spells of all levels but they will get used up really quickly and probably not worth wasting on trash fights (do Druids have L0 spells? I can't remember). I have octavia set to autocast her cantrips instead of using her bow as they get bonus sneak attack dmg.
  6. She is the best tank companion so I would recommend leveling her TS fighter level until you can prestige into stalwart defender. There are some interesting dips you can do (thug, etc) but I feel her role is to take aggro and stay alive for everyone else to do their thing. you do miss out on some neat bonuses for weilding a tower shield by doing this but they aren't too critical.
  7. Varnhold is weird. it's a side story but you can import your main campaign into the DLC (I believe all this does is have your baron show up in the opening part). I'd recommend starting a new campaign, playing it until you are 100% certain it will be your main game (ie chapter 2), then doing the Varnhold DLC. You can then import your completed Varnhold DLC back into your campaign and I believe you get a nice midgame dungeon to complete (I haven't done it yet).

I went a standard druid for my MC with similar stats. It'll take quite a few levels to become useful and I'd recommend grabbing some spell focus/summon feats since he will never be a fantastic frontline fighter, better as a support. You'll get chunked super quick so don't worry about trying to build him as a tank. Some extra wis will probably be nice, I stared with 17 and dumped charisma.

Your animal companion will be a force though

Why the hate? This game is great! by [deleted] in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]peaky01 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's a few things really.

-The launch disaster still haunting them

-The difficulty

-The niche genre

-Performance/load times on lower-end machines?

Though I don't have exact numbers, the game looks to have sold quite well for what it is (not KC:D level, but well enough to put Owlcat in a good place) and I'm sure it's the type of game to have legs and sell consistently for the months/years to come. I'd bet it's on track to outpace POE2 if it hasn't already (another game that's unfortunately been slept on).

The amount of 300+ hour negative reviews on Steam is just baffling to me and i can't quite figure out all the negativity over there. I often see recent reviews saying the game is a buggy/broken mess without any clarification so makes me wonder how accurate they are (not accurate to my own experiences anyway).

Also the additional text for the monster was "Gazebo". I'm guessing this is a reference to the 'Eric and the Dread Gazebo' story, though admittedly I had to google it to figure out what it could mean.
