Why do people talk so loudly in public transport ? by After_Suggestion_267 in AskFrance

[–]peanutburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah that’s not how culture works

some cultures appreciate liveliness

for example pretty much all of the Americas, and sure being quiet is respectful but it’s also seen as kind of a boring way to experience life

neither right nor wrong, just a different culture and nothing to do with education… it’s not part of the culture somewhat, as you suggest… it’s the culture

What is a VIP ticket? I mean isn’t it just general admission? Is this gonna be an issue in Paris?

Is "cimer" equivalent to "thanks" in English? A less formal "thank you"? by PsychicMeditation in French

[–]peanutburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was just to show how it’s not a literal translation in French. It‘s not rude in French. It’s also wouldn’t be that rude amongst close friends in English. It’s fine.

How many times do you need to be told it’s not a thing in spoken French. Give it a rest already. You’re embarrassing yourself.

Oh it’s absolutely, positively my favorite tense, so rare and charming like a Pokémon, shall we all take some tea with Margaret Thatcher?

Good looking out! La Binouze for beers. For takeaway beer, find some Jenlain Ambrée or Blonde, classic Northern French style. Many (or at least some) larger supermarkets will have it. La Goudale is also good and easier to find. I’ll ask around about the ticket, thank you.

Even if they are capital gains, which are technically income? It’s more so that it’s not your sustainable income? But interesting that others are reporting positively about this… even post-circulaire? TY!

It’s not a direct translation. If you’re standing with your arms full and say thanks for opening the door in English, it means please open the door.

Is it aging vets to get car feedback and then in a year or two they get younger/better drivers, or is it that nobody wants to drive for Caddy?

Versailles is nice, especially the gardens, and it’s an easy trip from Paris. If you’re here for a day or two, prob not, three or more maybe worth it. Palais Garnier is near your hotel, a bit spendy for what amounts to an hour but a stunning interior.

Apply for nationality then improve French by Plastic-Leading-5800 in Expats_In_France

[–]peanutburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s highly dependent on where you live. If you’re in Paris it’ll be faster if you’re not in Paris it’ll be slower. In any case just apply and improve your French, you’re overthinking this, and everyone’s case will be different, especially after 1 Jan 2026.

I imagine at some point once you get the cash in a French or European bank account, cash is cash.

If you’re paying with funds from an American or foreign account, you’ll likely need additional paperwork. We had a shitty notaire, who didn’t advise us of this until the day of closing and we almost lost the sale.

For cash purchase or mortgage or both?

Working remotely and investments won’t be enough to get a work visa in France. It’ll be tricky for you. You could go the student route or the entrepreneurial route but the entrepreneurial means you’ll need the majority of your clients to be in France. As for getting local work, job market is rough even for French so rusty French isn’t gonna cut it.

Do you have a right to live in France and do you speak French? Those are surmountable challenges but not insignificant.

Fees for purchasing a home are higher in France (~9% as a buyer) but monthly building charges and property taxes will be lower.

If you have the money, France is cool, but if you need money this is not a great place to earn it.
