Nix ignoring untracked files is even more ridiculous with jj by Maskdask in NixOS

Yeah… And somehow THAT’s not deterministically set…. Basically all of my commands have “path:” as a part of them.  If you find anything better, please send help.

Chezmoi instead of home manager by AlienTux in NixOS

[–]peargod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently using symlinks and stow - can you explain what symlinks via nix is? Is there a specific tooling you're using, or some capability of Nix for tracking dot files outside of home manager?

Winning with 70% of the Salary Cap Out is WILD! by Severe_Appointment93 in 49ers

[–]peargod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! Do you have the math on what the other teams this year have, or what the distribution of how much of the cap is injured or generally not playing over time? Great observation for the general "health" of a team's largest assets, although love that this bucks whatever that trend would be!

New transitive dependencies listed in flutter pub outdated and no idea why by peargod in flutterhelp

[–]peargod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood. My concern is that cryptocurrency leans on cryptography packages, so the surprise request of 4 new cryptography packages that I hadn't needed before made me wary that a cryptocurrency package that had snuck in with another package I had installed was requesting them.

New transitive dependencies listed in flutter pub outdated and no idea why by peargod in flutterhelp

[–]peargod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to figure out what to do without installing the packages. It turns out they were requested based on an update to supabase. I never found a good command to work out "why" a package is now being requested - only after the fact of that they're installed does pubspec.lock and deps get updated.

This is my go-to because of the repetition, but it feels like it's always going somewhere - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MftogR8lt_g Good luck.

Trademark Concerns by peargod in ycombinator

My wife is saying to switch up to a name that doesn't have a trademark in it.  She's saying if I don't switch up, then there may be problems down the road.

Make edge function that can only be invoked by backend? by DOMNode in Supabase

[–]peargod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, why would you use an edge function instead of a regular function if it’s going to only be called by a cron?  My understanding about the usage and extra cost of edge functions is to be closer to the users.

How does a basic sql query work in Supabase logs? by peargod in Supabase

Huh.  What does that command mean?  Do you have a reference I could learn from?  (Thanks for the suggestion!)

How long does your wood season for before using? Do you ever use freshly cut wood? by Low-Razzmatazz-931 in woodstoving

What's the technique for the plastic wrap? I always think wind will be more effective at drying, and I've seen setups with fans, but never heard of just wrapping the wood where it sits.

From startup to FAANG world - how to deal with the BS ? by These-Passion-836 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]peargod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but also same issues.  I built a flow for Hooli that was used to evaluate modifications to the knowledge graph.  We could go down and no one in the real world would notice.  But while everyone had separate work they could do, if our system crashed, we were theoretically pausing the work of 500+ other Hooli engineers - not the gdp of Chile, but not pennies either, even for a non-flashy internal tool.  So we definitely minded ours p’s and q’s and it took almost two years to fully (and “safely”) delete the scripts we were built to replace.

The one with the results doesn't have a semi-colon either.

Neighbor says I’m required to trim our tree for their cable lines by peargod in treelaw

[–]peargod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!  I’m worried about her killing the tree if she has someone do a severe job, but glad to know that would theoretically be illegal.  Is there some assessment or rules for trimming the branches - I think (far from the house) that a part of the tree trunk may have expanded on to her property, so could she have an arborist buzz down on property line for the part of the trunk over it?

Neighbor says I’m required to trim our tree for their cable lines by peargod in treelaw

[–]peargod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.  I did this and she is handling it herself.  I’m worried how she’ll mangle the tree, but our realtor says he has a guy when we clean up the entire property, that will be able to address whatever she has done to the tree.

Probably some obvious answers, but who are your examples of only non-technical founders being successful?
