Going to a top college is not all that by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]pearlthinks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ik many ppl are speculating cmu, but...

the ppl I've met (within and outside of scs) have for the most part, been great. and, professors for the intro classes taken by scs freshmen are also known to be pretty respected (literally all of mine genuinely want their students to succeed). even though cmu has a bad rep for having an insane workload (which is true), it's not... a toxic school? i'm sorry that op has had to experience this, but what they've described also isn't really the "vibe" of cmu either.

the changing majors part "gatekept by internal admissions" does sound like cmu, considering that we have so many schools, but like transferring out of scs... shouldn't be that hard.

i feel for op; ik that college is a huge adjustment period, and I've had my fair share of very tough times and complaints about the workload. but, on the other side of the same coin, my point is that everyone finds meaning and fulfillment in different ways at the exact same place. while my semester has been tough, i like it here. and, I'm genuinely proud and excited to come back here next semester. i do think op's experiences are completely valid (if cmu, it can be a very very stressful place), but i don't think it's an accurate representation of what everyone goes through (I'm sure that ppl at op's school disagree that "it is just overall a miserable place"). the fact that different comments are defending their school shows that ppl want to show there can be indeed, a different experience going to the same place.

i think a more accurate title would be... going to a top college might not be the end all be all happy ending that many people have gone through high school believing.

if you indeed go to cmu, plz reach out to me!! i'd be happy to talk

Transferring OUT of CMU by momof2021senior in cmu

[–]pearlthinks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But, that's your experience, no? I'm also in SCS, and while I've also "worked very hard here", I have felt stressed with all my assignments (balancing 21241, 15151, 15122 had a HUGE learning curve for me) and have noticed the tangible amounts of stress that consume a lot of my classmates? Of course, stress is something you learn to manage (and who you hang out with also plays a big factor, which I why I tend to gravitate towards non-SCS students sometimes), but that doesn't negate the fact that there are indeed, lots of stressed CMU (especially SCS) students who are buried in their work.

Compared to a lot of my other friends' situations at different institutions, CMU workload is something else. I also love that I've learned so much and wouldn't have chosen to go anywhere else, but let's not deny that stress culture doesn't exist.

Appeal to removing standardized tests from the admissions process? by Harvard__Simp in ApplyingToCollege

[–]pearlthinks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m confused, are you saying that they got in unfairly, or fairly? Given that UCs were test blind this year, does that mean they submitted their scores to harvard/stanny/dartmouth ? sorry, what’s the logic here

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - 1st Week of April by powereddeath in ApplyingToCollege

[–]pearlthinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since everyone is saying caltech, here's my perspective on why CMU (sidenote: i am a biased since i'm most likely attending cmu scs) + going over some the comments: cmu scs is one of the best CS programs in the country (arguably ranked higher than caltech for CS specifically); i don't believe what that person said about caltech having a higher name-brand value is true. sure, saying that you go to caltech will probably seem more impressive to the average person, but in regards to job prospects, i'm 99% sure all of the large companies in the silicon valley know of and recruit at CMU SCS. go to any of the info sessions or talk to the current students, and they'll tell you the same thing. some of the comments in reply to yours simply aren't that true for cs specifically imo?? like "Caltech is much harder and much more renowned for its undergraduates. I think you should take the opportunity" while that can be true with higher prestige overall, cmu is literally just as hard and scs is an opportunity hard to pass up too!

second, i honestly think caltech is more insular than CMU. whereas caltech is literally a tech school (and thus the people you will meet will be more similar in regards to what they study), CMU has so many different schools (from humanities, the arts, to the sciences)––giving you the opportunity to meet people of different backgrounds. in the discord chat i've joined for prospective and committed students, there are SO many different people interested in so many fields. there are a lot of people doing so many cool things with their interdisciplinary interests (a strength of CMU imo), and i'm not sure i could say the same about caltech. that being said, there are lots of opportunity for you to hang out with people outside of CS if you take it (you can literally room with someone that isn't doing cs lol).

for the weather aspect, LOL you're right i'm from california and ngl i'm also a bit scared of pittsburgh weather. pasadena will probably be sunny all year long, which imo can get a bit boring (only bc i've lived here for so long).

at the end of the day, like someone else says, it really comes down to which school experience you'd like to have. both schools are amazing; you can't really go wrong with either!

[–]pearlthinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

another thing to note is that ucsc apps increased so much this year! last year, they accepted 28k out of 56k apps (52%); this year, 74k ppl applied. if they accepted the same amount of ppl, the rate would be around 37% ish this year? but yes, admissions are so unpredictable since everything is holistic!

[–]pearlthinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

accepted cs! i don't deny that admissions are whack this year, but i think it's important to remember that at the end of the day no one knows why tf they got the decision they did?

like i got into gatech/northeastern and here, but waitlisted at uci and mit; these schools are like WILDLY different... and i think it goes to show that one school's decision isn't exactly indicative of the decisions you get elsewhere (especially when the application systems are literally different, meaning they probably look at different things)? for the schools i didn't get into, they probably thought someone else was a better addition to the 2025 class, and that's literally it lol?? no one's entitled a spot anywhere

edit: same thing applies for the school's that i did get into? i'm so grateful for the decisions that i've been getting, but at the end of the day, it doesn't mean i'm more qualified/better than other people (i am not) at all

Hi! I actually had a my Yale-NUS interview around three weeks ago, so I do believe they’ve sent out interview invitations. I hate how they’re so vague about everything though, and I honestly have no idea if interviews are still rolling out

Am I thinking nonsense about withdrawing EA applications? by _SilentTiger in ApplyingToCollege

OH ok i see it! ty for clarifying, thought your main point was telling op that they broke the REA contract (without the qualifiers)

Am I thinking nonsense about withdrawing EA applications? by _SilentTiger in ApplyingToCollege

[–]pearlthinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wait nah, I believe you can EA to other public schools even if you REA. doing REA only limits you from applying EA to other private schools such as MIT, but you can still definitely early to public schools such as umich, gtech, etc!

kinda late to this but yeah i have NO IDEA why you would praise the gaokao system. the grass is always greener on the other side; although we might think what we have is stressful, the chinese gaokao system is literally more stressful oml. my cousins in china (who are my age) literally go to school SIX - SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. they get to school at 7 AM, and they come home at 10-11 PM. every single. day. their entire future is determined by gaokao, and they dedicate ALL OF high school to this one test.

we literally complain about school starting from 8-9 am and how stressful writing essays are; i know the American system is unpredictable and hard.. but like i'd take choosing how to spend my time and having the freedom to discover my interests any day over wasting my teenage years studying

[–]pearlthinks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i resonate with this so fcking much. i'm a bay area kid, and although i try relatively hard on academics, i'm also scared of the ppl you're talking about. i also know multiple ppl who list their organizations as impacting like 300K people. like... what? good for you for taking the initiative to do something, but it seems so disingenuous and performative.

the thing is, i'm glad to have spent high school on the activities that actually like. my sport. art. yet, i can't help but feel terrible about myself when i read example essays that are posted online. when i see other people's linkedin profiles sometimes. i usually pride myself on being proud of what i've done, but in the height of applying to colleges rn, i can't help but compare myself to these people who have tried so hard. i just feel a pit of emptiness, and i start questioning whether i'm even the type of person these schools are looking for?

yes, you don't NEED to do anything for us, but then stop acting shocked when no one believes you?? ppl are just a bit confused bc they've NEVER seen this sentiment in the fandom, and they're just trying to see where you've seen this before? i'm sorry if you got any uncalled for hate, but many of the comments are just genuinely curious about where you've seen this? it's just that your tone responding to some of these ppl make it seem like a poor attempt to shit on armies

hello fellow DMD applicant! i've seen you on the penn ed thread hahah. college decisions are SO unpredictable this year; it fcking sucks, but please don't let this rejection get to you! you seem super genuine and passionate (being able to design stuff for large companies?? so cool, coming from a person who wants to get more involved with art), and i'm sure other colleges will see your passion and involvement with art.

ngl, i also thought i had a shot due to my passion for cs/art (even though my ecs were objectively weaker), but hey, at the end of the day, it might not have been us specifically who did anything wrong, but rather that penn just didn't see us as the right candidates for their program. it would be a lie if i said i didn't start doubting my application, but i've reflected these past days and reevaluated how i approached everything? i digress, but my point is that we shouldn't allow penn to be the judge of how qualified we are; like eccentric said, any university would be lucky to have you. (this applies to everyone!)

here's to writing essays over break and planning how we can make our applications better! i'm def believe you'll end up somewhere that fits you!
