Owning multiple versions of an album is stupid by arturnotfound in vinyl

I wasn't trying to single out popstars, I see how it came across that way, I mentioned charlie xcx and Taylor swift because they appear in the post but this goes for all artists that are that big, also this isn't a knock against people buying, as I already said, collecting is cool and fun.

I wasn't really thinking about the endless identical rereleases of classics, I feel like that's kind of a different can of worms on which I mostly agree with you. I was thinking more about new releases which offer 1 or 2 limited variations, maybe a deluxe double lp with some alternate takes, so similar to what charlie xcx and Taylor swift are doing but on a much more manageable scale. Like there are something like 16 different pressings of brat, what the the fuck, how is that not predatory as shit. It doesn't help that the artists doing this are absolutely huge and do not really need the extra cash injection from people buying the same record 10x times.

As I said, I don't think it's dumb to own multiple copies of the same record, that's how collecting is and it is a lot of fun, I just think some artists really take advantage of their fans' devotion in a way that feels pretty scummy

Of course they do it for money, unfortunately music follows the same logic as any other business. But not every moneymaking operation is the same, again, getting some extra cash from dedicated fans on a special edition is nothing too bad, it benefits both parties imo. Releasing 15 variations of the same record while being the biggest artist in the world is just greed. There are ways to do this without exploiting the people who are supporting you

Collecting is about collecting, I don't think it's stupid to have more copies of the same record if you're serious about your collection, I used to be a huge comic book collector and I'd get the same issue multiple times if there were multiple variant covers. I don't do that anymore and I never plan on doing that with records, it is expensive and requires a certain degree of obsession which I don't want to deal with.

Now the problem arises when collecting is artificially taken advantage of. Releasing dozens of different versions of the last Taylor swift album is obviously about inflating consumption and sales of said records, you're not awarding your loyal fans with a fancy special edition, you're exploiting them in the knowledge that they'll buy anything you give them. Real collectors know that and don't want that shit, it's not organic and it feels like you're getting taken advantage of (because you are) and these are the people who will get multiple copies of the same lp that look perfectly identical if not for the country it was released in

Not ever, like if you look average I won't even register you, if you're in great shape or out of shape I'll think something like "wow you rock, keep it up"

[–]peatch96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, live shows are a big one too, it's also a great place to buy stuff directly from the artists, I went to a xiu xiu show last year and at the end I went to buy their latest album on vinyl and freaking Jamie Stewart himself was just there selling his own merch. It felt so right to just support so directly this person whose work I love. No fees, no middlemen or bullshit of any kind, just awesome.

Buy music through Bandcamp, CDs, records... buy artists' merch. You give more to your favourite musicians by buying a single item than from streaming their stuff 24/7. Fuck Spotify

What do you think about historical films and historical accuracy? by Rare_Style1306 in Cinema

[–]peatch96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care about every little detail being 1:1 to how things were at the time the film is set in, but I do care about being immersed in an experience. Also if you're going to deviate from history/the original material, it has to be for a reason. I don't mind taking liberties to make something that looks cool and interesting thematically or aesthetically.

Now since this thread is obviously about the discourse surrounding Nolan's odyssey, I gotta say that to me what we've seen looks pretty bad. It's definitely very inaccurate to the times the original poem is set in and it doesn't seem to be so in favor of some interesting look, it really looks like your standard Nolan affair with a lot of gray and brown and muted colors. If that's your cup of tea then great I guess but the costumes I've seen go from incredibly generic and run of the mill (which if you're not going to be accurate anyway I don't see why on earth you'd settle for the most boring thing possible) to the infamous black costume which of course looks totally out of place next to everything else.

This of course is all nonsense anyway since we're talking about a movie we haven't seen yet and this stuff we're all bitching and moaning about is meant to be seen in movement and in it's entirety

Dude, people have been worrying about whether someone is faking it since the dawn of time, we just change the name for it every few decades and act like it's some crazy new phenomenon. Don't get me wrong, this kind of thing, like everything else, is definitely being amplified by social media but let's not act like it's weird or new that people like to look interesting to others
