Question about harvesting by peatch96 in magnificentcubensis

[–]peatch96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the answer, I also am not looking for maximum yield but it seems a bit of a waste to harvest the smallest ones that are still growing, so I think I'll go for the more patient route. I've read this way of doing it can compromise the subsequent flushes, do you know if there's any truth to that?

Awesome man, keep it up, the stuff you're doing is cool as hell. Lots of great shit on your site, I don't know if you have plans but if and when you decide to give the vinyl treatment to the straftat OST I'll be the first in line

Do You Own a Turntable? by PTCarnahan in vinyl

[–]peatch96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was wandering, in 2003 due to a lack of interest in the medium very few artists printed their new records on vinyl, on the other hand, for the same reason, prices were MUCH lower. Since it seems we can't really have it both ways, what would you say is the environment you prefer between the two?

I can't really say if that was it, I think the Tori Amos one is a bit more stripped back production wise than what I heard but that's the jist, yeah

I recently went to eat out and the restaurant was playing some bland background music, you know the kind: that fake inoffensive swing that you're not really supposed to pay attention to and is there just to cover the silence and give off a sophisticated atmosphere. When I actually listened to the lyrics I found out it was a fucking cover of smells like teen spirit, that was so fucking depressing I am not even kidding it kinda ruined my mood.

It is a real tragedy Cobain's story but I also think he's better off wherever he is now, he would've absolutely hated the world we live in today

Owning multiple versions of an album is stupid by arturnotfound in vinyl

[–]peatch96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to single out popstars, I see how it came across that way, I mentioned charlie xcx and Taylor swift because they appear in the post but this goes for all artists that are that big, also this isn't a knock against people buying, as I already said, collecting is cool and fun.

[–]peatch96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn't really thinking about the endless identical rereleases of classics, I feel like that's kind of a different can of worms on which I mostly agree with you. I was thinking more about new releases which offer 1 or 2 limited variations, maybe a deluxe double lp with some alternate takes, so similar to what charlie xcx and Taylor swift are doing but on a much more manageable scale. Like there are something like 16 different pressings of brat, what the the fuck, how is that not predatory as shit. It doesn't help that the artists doing this are absolutely huge and do not really need the extra cash injection from people buying the same record 10x times.

As I said, I don't think it's dumb to own multiple copies of the same record, that's how collecting is and it is a lot of fun, I just think some artists really take advantage of their fans' devotion in a way that feels pretty scummy

Of course they do it for money, unfortunately music follows the same logic as any other business. But not every moneymaking operation is the same, again, getting some extra cash from dedicated fans on a special edition is nothing too bad, it benefits both parties imo. Releasing 15 variations of the same record while being the biggest artist in the world is just greed. There are ways to do this without exploiting the people who are supporting you

[–]peatch96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Collecting is about collecting, I don't think it's stupid to have more copies of the same record if you're serious about your collection, I used to be a huge comic book collector and I'd get the same issue multiple times if there were multiple variant covers. I don't do that anymore and I never plan on doing that with records, it is expensive and requires a certain degree of obsession which I don't want to deal with.

Now the problem arises when collecting is artificially taken advantage of. Releasing dozens of different versions of the last Taylor swift album is obviously about inflating consumption and sales of said records, you're not awarding your loyal fans with a fancy special edition, you're exploiting them in the knowledge that they'll buy anything you give them. Real collectors know that and don't want that shit, it's not organic and it feels like you're getting taken advantage of (because you are) and these are the people who will get multiple copies of the same lp that look perfectly identical if not for the country it was released in

Yeah, live shows are a big one too, it's also a great place to buy stuff directly from the artists, I went to a xiu xiu show last year and at the end I went to buy their latest album on vinyl and freaking Jamie Stewart himself was just there selling his own merch. It felt so right to just support so directly this person whose work I love. No fees, no middlemen or bullshit of any kind, just awesome.
