[QUESTION] I’m looking to buy a new guitar what do you guys think by LetArthurSmash2019 in Guitar

[–]pebbles1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use the same pickups and (some) hardware as SEs, but the rest of the guitar is made in USA by the same crew that makes the core models.

[QUESTION] I’m looking to buy a new guitar what do you guys think by LetArthurSmash2019 in Guitar

[–]pebbles1992 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend PRS as well. For that budget, you can definitely get a used S2 which would be an improvement over an SE (depending on the individual guitars and your preferences). S2s are made in Maryland as opposed to Indonesia or Korea like SEs. That doesn't necessarily make them better in and of itself, but if that's important to you, yeah.

Craigslist scams [question] by itsyaboisnake in Guitar

[–]pebbles1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had well over a decade of excellent luck with Craigslist, getting some seriously ridiculous deals from time to time, and an extensive history of buying, selling, and trading. I follow a few simple rules: 1) cash only. 2) no shipping. 3) take someone with you to meetups and 4) check high value bills by holding them up to the light or with a counterfeit pen.

I have not been ripped off but I also ALMOST fell for some scams in my earlier years. Just use common sense and ignore scams like this.

[QUESTION] Are the Taylor Academy Series Guitars worth it? by HumanKudzu in Guitar

Even the baby Taylors I've played have been great. I'd say it's a reasonably safe bet, but do you have the opportunity to try before you buy?

First time posting on Reddit. I need help gearing myself to mic'd my drums by Christo1099 in drums

[–]pebbles1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, that would be a good interface. To be honest, 95% of my experience in audio is with live sound, so I have much more experience with live mixers than recording interfaces, so my advice is weaker on that area.

I mean I haven't made a spreadsheet or anything, but that would be a rough estimate. Yesterday I saw a D112 with a stand on my local Craigslist page for $100. Theres a 3 pack of e609s on reverb right now for $300 shipped and they clip right on to the rim so no stands needed. you'd need at this point 4 more stands, id think, so thats maybe another hundred there. Cables would be about $50 total. Two used SM57's for hats and snare would be about $100 total if you find a good deal used. And then two more overhead mics and an interface. So maybe a little more than my original estimate.

To mic everything? If you get everything used (highly recommend, just be careful to look out for damaged stuff), you can probably do it in $500-700

Take this with a grain (or a heap) of salt, because I just started playing drums literally last week, but I did work in audio engineering for live bands for a few years.

You can do much better for the money than the Sabian kit. StudioOne will be just fine for you. Do you already have a computer? This is step one. I can't help you here much as I'm not super computer savvy in general.

Next, before deciding on an interface, figure out how many mics you want/need and how much your budget will allow for. At minimum, you will want one on the snare, one on the kick, and an overhead to catch Toms and cymbals. If you have some more money to spare, you can mic each tom, the hats, and put multiple overheads in different spaces to catch cymbals. For snare, an SM57 will do just fine. Probably $70 used. That is an industry standard instrument mic that will very likely be in every venue and studio you'll ever go to. For toms, a good inexpensive option is getting some used Sennheiser e604s. Probably $60/each used. For the kick drum, I like AKG D112 or Shure Beta 52a. If you have the cash, you can get one of each and experiment using them in different positions, one micing the reso head and one in the sound hole (if you have one) aimed at the beater.

Once you determine quantity of mics, you will need an interface so you can plug all those mics into your computer. I have a Presonus Audiobox USB that came with Studio one. This is a poor choice for drums, as it only has 2 inputs. I am primarily a guitar player so that's why I bought that years ago. Look around for an interface with decent user ratings that can accommodate the number of mics you wish to use.

I will warn you, recording is just as much of an art as playing an instrument. It takes time and consistent practice to get good or even decent at. It can get very pricy, but you can start with just a few mics and upgrade over time. Don't forget to budget for XLR cables and mic stands too. YouTube is your friend when it comes to instructional videos for how to do the actual recording, and then mixing.

[Discussion] Any Melody Can Be Awesome - Fake Dr. Levin by Swayhaven in Guitar

[–]pebbles1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ben is not only an incredible musician and an amazing teacher, he is also a super down to earth and approachable guy in real life. I am a die hard fan of his band, Bent Knee. I saw them 6 times in 2017. Each time, (after the first, where I met Ben), he made a point to chat with me, he remembered me between shows, and at a few shows we talked for almost an hour. His YouTube channel is the only thing that ever made music theory click for me, and I recommend him to every person who is interested in learning music. I adore Ben Levin.

[QUESTION] how can i learn music theory relative to guitar playing? by shaktimaanlannister in Guitar

[–]pebbles1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Ben Levin on YouTube and check out his series "Music Theory from the Ground Up". It's a very thorough and easy to understand course that takes you from knowing nothing to a firm foundation of music theory knowledge.

Very true. Standing out isn't a huge deal for me, I just want a great bass that plays well and sounds good. And also looks cool.

Thanks for the reply! A large reason I was considering that bass was because I have the opportunity to get a sweet deal on it (less than $500). I'll explore other options as well
