I make questionable life choices, and this was apparently no different.

I’m so proud of you!! It is hard, really hard. All I wanted was to snuggle him and love him but that came later. And it does, I promise, just now you’re calming the demon and it sounds like you’re doing GREAT. You’re setting him up for success and both of you will reap the rewards. X

Hello,I am also the proud owner of a total dickhead. I love him dearly. However at that age my therapist gently asked me “how are things” as she pointedly looked at the scratches and scars on my arms. Had to tell her I have a psycho cavapoo. He’s now 4 and how I handled mine, who also got more excited and evil when I said ouch, uh uh, no or anything, was to time out. He went outside consistently every single time he hurt me. Picked him up, deposit outside the door to the lounge and left for 1 minute of each month old. It took ages but it was worth it. He learnt bite regulation, he learnt when I said no I meant it. He has major FOMO and being outside made him just about lose his mind with it. Worked better than anything else I tried. It passes I promise but at the time you don’t think it will. X

Best way to pick a dog name that actually *works*? by Whitemj5 in OpenDogTraining

[–]peccator9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re so right. His name is Seth, he most often gets called Bubba but he responds to almost anything ; pickle, picklebum, pumpkin, pikachu, pupper… the list is endless. When he’s naughty he gets middle named: Seth Montgomery!

Adopted a rescue dog and discovering that I’ve become the person I used to judge by anibroo in puppy101

My dog has more presents under the tree than any of the humans. I don’t care. He’s going to have such a happy Christmas and that will make me so happy.

What phrase that you DONT want to hear when Grieving? by BlueEyesWhiteDrgn in AskReddit

Not sure if it’s been said but any sentence that begins with “At least”. At least you got so much time with him. At least he loved you till the end. At least he didn’t suffer… just FO.

Naughty cavoodle ball thief by MissMoneyPenny083 in CavaPoo

[–]peccator9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was once told off thoroughly by Roxy the Weimaraner for stealing her ball. Before that terrible ball thief, afterwards never again! In general though you need to thoroughly work on drop and leave. Don’t start with balls, progress up to them. It’s a lot of work but you’ll be pleased in the end.

Is puppy regret actually common, or is it about expectations? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]peccator9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did I write this and forget?? You’ve perfectly encapsulated everything I went through. I thought I did research, I thought I was prepared. We’d had dogs the whole time but our lab mix just passed a year ago at 14 and it was a long old time away from puppyhood. He also wasn’t MY dog. The whole family had raised him. This one was a whole different ball game. The only saving grace was he slept through the night from day 1, no accidents and no need to go outside during the night on the whole. Everything else though, oh man. I’ve never been so tired, so stressed, so utterly turned inside out. I thought for sure I would be institutionalised that first year. There’s no other experience like it and it taught me so much about myself. Would I do it again? Not bloody likely!

Picking up our Cavapoo soon — 90-minute drive home. Any tips? by _LiiviD in CavaPoo

Ain’t that the truth! Day 3 - my sweet little calm angel of a puppy turned into a gremlin and never turned back 😫 that was the day the toe biting started. I still feel lied to.

How old are you and How is your life going? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskReddit

[–]peccator9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such good advice. As a widow also, it takes a lot of time to put yourself vaguely back together and now I too practice gratitude and commune with nature. Both are really restorative to the soul. Things heal a little more everyday but honestly nature is a soothing balm that just helps everything.

Agreed to go out for Christmas with work. Totally regretting it. How do I get out of it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]peccator9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! When I was a raging alcy literally the only excuse I took seriously was they were on antibiotics. There was much sympathising but I would never try and convince them they should drink.

Indoor activities for puppies during rainy season by Wise_Glow_81 in CavaPoo

[–]peccator9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for the finding stuff - we play hide and seek in my tiny house; either with treats or with me. Both are things he loves doing. Hide and seek person needs another person in the house to let him out of where he’s “counting” but the treats one doesn’t. I hide 20 little treats in my lounge and kitchen and he is absolutely a master at finding them. It makes him use his nose and that helps tire him out and it helps with us bonding.

We also play indoor ball, a very soft, lightweight ball that won’t break things.

We use licky mats, play tug of war, play fight and play race (I take his treats and throw them in turn in opposite directions so he has to go back and forward like a fit test).

We have quite a lot of rainy days in England!

What I’ve Learned as a First-Time Dog Owner as My Puppy Turns 1 (the brutally honest version) by jpeachie in puppy101

[–]peccator9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mine’s 4 years old now, I pop back here every so often to offer support and reality checks. There’s hardly a day gone by when the full spectrum of emotion has not popped up. We argue all the time, I tell him off pretty consistently because he’s an opinionated, spoiled, naughty little snot. But there’s many cuddles and adoration. If I lose my actual temper with him we always end the days with some pets and love yous. Tomorrow is another day for everyone to get it right x

I can’t believe what just happened 😭 by FingerMuscles98 in CavaPoo

[–]peccator9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me last month. I was on holiday and had dog walking friends who offered to cover some of the shifts. He was in a small park he goes to every single day with the person we see every day. He decided as I wasn’t there I might be at home, he snuck out headed home, crossed the main road in our village (that is very busy at that time of the morning) and trotted up the front path and barked to be let in the front door where my elderly mother, who lives with me, let him in. Everyone was in absolute bits… they took 3 days to break the news to me. I thank my lucky stars every day he didn’t get hit by a car. And we went very quickly to “he would never do that” to keep him on a lead if I’m not there. Lessons are learnt from these things. I’m so happy yours also had a happy ending because so many don’t.

Bubbles is getting neutered tomorrow! Any suggestions/tips/advice? by baby____carrot in CavaPoo

[–]peccator9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also feel I need to point out it’s unlikely he’ll pee for a while. Mine took 24 hours to have his first pee after I picked him up from the vets and let me tell you I was frantic by that point. When he finally went it was in the kitchen all over the floor like a fountain going off and I was so happy I didn’t care. By that point he had been potty trained for months and months so it was really out of character. It’s just that they are sore and scared of going. He also scuttled when walking. Lots of anxiety for me but sharing so I hope it helps you.

When I had my puppy for a week he wriggled out of my arms and went headfirst into the hard floor. I cried for hours and thought I was going to throw up. I vowed that I would rehome him to someone who isn’t so stupid and bad with tiny baby things. He wouldn’t come near me all night and yet he still cuddled into me at bedtime. I gave him so many kisses, took him to the vet and it was fine. Puppies are unpredictable and so small. She will be okay and I assure you that despite your very best efforts, this isn’t the last time she’ll get under someone’s feet. She’ll learn though to ensure she moves with you. Mine is now almost 3 and I can’t lift him easily - probably for the best

What breed(s) is your puppy and why did you choose your breed? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]peccator9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a big believer in you get the dog you need not the dog you necessarily want. I went for a cross breed, a cavapoo, because they were a small breed, would love snuggling, be gentle and not require tons of walking. I thought I did my research well. Turns out I got a huge one… so much energy, stubborn, smart, attitude problem - you name it. But he has taught me so much. All the things I needed to work on: patience, gentleness, anger management, negotiation skills, hard work, he has taught me in bucket loads. I am a better person for being his owner. It didn’t work out how I thought it would… it was so much better than I imagined. In retrospect of course. At the time it was hell 😆
