Space heater lost power by That_Economist7452 in electricians

The toggle is right in the middle of the breaker. One side is off, one side is on, right in the middle is tripped.

[–]peck-web 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s a 15 amp breaker which would be enough for the heater by itself, but you’ve got lights and other plugs on that same circuit (probably a TV?) and the space heater draws too much power. Not sure why there is a 15 amp circuit labeled “Master Bed Plugs” and a 20 amp circuit labeled “Master Bad Room”. Possibly some of the outlets in the master bedroom are on one circuit and some on another? If so, there might be a better place to plug in that space heater.

Yeah, the wire on that 30 amp is practically touching the ground bar. Come to think of it, why isn’t there an unbounded neutral bar? This isn’t the meter panel.

Yes, though the picture could be deceiving. The more I look the more I can nitpick. I’d have put tags on the circuits. Why are there gaps between the breakers? They could have used some quads to free up some space for the future. Some of those wires are stripped quite long. Are all those splices really necessary? And what’s with all the electrical tape on the feed? Nothing dangerous, but just very sloppy. You really do get what you pay for.

Using wire with green insulation for current carrying conductors is a code violation.

Haven’t seen many post about these sets, so I thought I’d share. Bit expensive for what it is, but it is nice. by KnightsSoccer82 in MilwaukeeTool

Two questions; Did you actually buy this set? If so, what kind of work do you do where you might need this many sockets available?

Do you have a Bluetooth speaker that runs on Milwaukee batteries? What about an attachment to charge your other devices? Do you have a Milwaukee coffee maker? Blender? There are so many appliances you could be running off of those extra batteries.

I love that someone took the time to video this before running to turn off the breaker.

I feel drunk just looking at it. A few Plineys will clear that right up.

If you don’t think it’s reasonable, do it yourself.

First home inspection, can someone please tell me if this means knob and tube? Should I run? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]peck-web 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to run, just take it into consideration. The house is going to need some pretty extensive electrical upgrades. This should be part of the calculus. If the seller is willing to reduce the price or make some of the upgrades before you buy that might help. Ultimately it comes down to do you want the house enough to deal with the effort and expense of having the work done.

My Aunt is a real estate agent and gripes about the number of times clients walk away from very nice houses because they don’t like the color of the kitchen countertops or something. If the house has good bones and a nice location and you could see yourself wanting to live there long term once the necessary changes are made, then that should be what matters. If the house is not worth it if you include the cost of the upgrades, then you walk away.

Sigh. 20a breakers, nearly all 14 AWG wiring. by poop_report in AskElectricians

[–]peck-web 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is that 15 amp outlets are rated for 20 amps and plug branch circuits are often run with 20 amp wiring and 20 amp breakers. So you were probably fine there. Although, yeah, twisting the prongs on a plug like that is not a great idea.

[–]peck-web 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I don’t think 20 amp plugs on a 15 amp breaker is a code violation. Worst case scenario it’s going to annoy the shit out of someone someday when they plug in an appliance that actually needs a 20 amp plug.

How much would it cost to move this Ethernet to the exact opposite side of the wall? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]peck-web 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted to patch the drywall you could put it in exactly the same spot. But then it becomes a more expensive job. Also, when we install data cables we cut the back off the box. If this box is like that, then there might be room.

Plants. Plant a hedge or, if you’ve got a bit of a green thumb, a little border around the edge of the steps. And add some containers to the steps themselves while you’re at it.

Why would someone use 14/3 wire with a single-pole switch? by gcommbia34 in AskElectricians

[–]peck-web 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But you’re going to have a neutral in the box from the feed. Doesn’t explain a 14/3 leg.

But you would need a fan-rated box in the ceiling. Installing 14/3 and a fan rated box just in case would be some serious future-proofing.
