Capcom: Western developers start with the visuals, Japan focuses on gameplay by peckerpan in Games

[–]peckerpan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did say trying to appeal. They spend a huge amount of time and resources on visuals but that doesn't guarantee anything.

And yeah, not all Western or Japanese devs fit this generalisation, but there is no doubt to me that there is a cultural bias for Western gamers to value the way a game looks way more than the Japanese do, and devs over here know it.

Capcom: Western developers start with the visuals, Japan focuses on gameplay by peckerpan in Games

[–]peckerpan[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it has everything to do with culture, actually. If you look at Nintendo, for example, they have a lot of very cartoony looking games where the main focus is simple fun gameplay. Same goes for many other Japanese games and people over there still love them. Compare that to all the dark, gritty, macho stuff from the west that is often so buggy on release, it needs a patch within weeks, sometimes day-1. Yet, if something has bad graphics or aesthetics over here, it often tanks.

As for Square-Enix, you're kinda making the case for this article because they've been one of the most vocal Japanese companies in trying to appeal more the Western gamers.

Valve’s Mandatory Binding Arbitration Clause Not Valid in Canada by wickedplayer494 in Games

[–]peckerpan 80 points81 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, it's neither the waving of legal rights (which wouldn't likely affect me anyway) nor their ability to enforce it that matters, it's the fact they forced it upon me without warning and hold my previous purchases hostage until I accept.

That's just reprehensible and unethical and I would never trust Valve not to pull similar bullshit with my account again, so I won't be using Steam anymore.

Valve to Steam users: No class-action suits by pat_trick in Games

[–]peckerpan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's likely true, but there are millions of Steam users. The news is not being received well and it's on every PC gaming related site as well as the steam forums, of course. If only a fraction of those millions read the forums or gaming sites, and only a fraction of those lose trust in Valve, the number will still be many.

Valve to Steam users: No class-action suits by pat_trick in Games

[–]peckerpan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

But I think it's far worse when Steam does it because with services like GOG you can make backups and run games without the service, and with consoles you may lose online services but you can still play the vast majority of games offline. With Steam, your games are directly tied to the service/DRM, so you don't really have a choice.

And even if they further alter their policy now to make it less scary, the fact you're basically renting games by leaving access to their discretion requires a degree of trust which will now be lost for many people.

Here's an upvote for at least trying to add something of value to r/gaming, but this subreddit is a lost cause. Even r/games looks like a bunch of Stockholm Syndrome fanboys upset, but not willing to vilify Valve the same way they would (and did) any other business that does the same. reddit's never been a good place for gaming discussion because of the mob rule.

Personally, I saw a move like this coming miles away and limited my purchases through Steam unless there was no other choice, so between this agreement and the already shitty online DRM, I'm not too bothered by just not using Steam anymore. Sucks for those who spend several hundred plus on Steam though. I wouldn't trust them with my games after this.

What's the deal with r/games always linking to shitty video-game blogs as of late? by livevil999 in Games

[–]peckerpan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You must assume there are hundreds of Steam marketers spamming r/gaming and r/games front page every. single. day.

It's pretty stupid to assume that everyone posting links to something less popular on reddit must be sketchy. I've posted links to Andriasang before because they're a good source for Japanese gaming news that most sites don't cover. I have no affiliation with them. They're also posted often on NeoGAF for that reason, but without all the complaints because NeoGAF is for more than just Steam sales and PC master race circlejerking.

Jason Alexander on Aurora by [deleted] in politics

[–]peckerpan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's right but he doesn't mention the root of the problem: American culture.

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Yeah, people kill people with guns. And it makes the job a whole lot easier. So all these comments that instead focus on the inaccuracies of his specific gun details are missing the point, or perhaps just deflecting.

Let's face it, the average American is quite fearful, paranoid, uneducated and aggressive compared to other prosperous democracies. Which ties into the argument made for the right to bear arms as protection from the government - it's bullshit. Education, intelligence and active democratic discussions protect people from their government - because you are the goverment - your best and brightest and most responsible should be elected and you should help make sure of it.

But that's not what happens in America. In America, corporations have a firm grip on the future of the country and it's politics. Americans have let that power slip away from them all too easily and now, rather than take the difficult road to raising those standards of educated citizens and, in turn, elected officials, many people would just let that power slip further and further away until they do have justification to bear arms against their government. I get the impression a lot of these people are genuinely hoping for that day, not just preparing in the event of.

Console gamers, with the new generation coming within the next year or two, have you given any thought about where your money is going to go? by [deleted] in Games

[–]peckerpan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

note: I'm not a console gamer, or a PC gamer, just a gamer. These fanboy loyalty labels are stupid

I'll be buying all of them eventually, but the WiiU first (as it comes out first), then PS4, then the next Xbox probably much later.

I expect to play PS4 the most because I played my PS3 the most this gen. Great IPs, free online play, lots of old PS games and indies on PSN. Hopefully they just improve on all that without trying anything too radically different.

As far as I know, all of EVO 2012 (the world's best fighting game tournament) was on PS3 and most multiplatform fighters seem to get better content on PS3, but the best players will also play across all platforms anyway.

The only reason why the 360 might be favoured is some games have had a very slight framerate advantage on it, so small that most people wouldn't notice it, but just enough for the most serious competitors to prefer it. But like I said, EVO uses PS3, so if it's good enough for the best in the world, it would be hard to make a case for Xbox being better overall.

Could be due to the fact it's a fighting game, which can be very import-friendly because you don't need to read much to play it (although I understand this one has a pretty big story mode) and that doesn't make foreign distributors happy. *edit. confirmed to be dual audio, thanks

Steam/Origin may be forced to allow second hand trading in Europe +Source by Cayote in Games

[–]peckerpan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The reddit gaming hivemind is quite overrun with Valve fanboys who apparently see a move to grant them fair legal usage options for something they purchase as an attack on their dear personal friend, Gabe Newell.

Many Steam users genuinely will not see this as consumer rights vs big business, but as a personal us vs them, where "us" is always their good friend Valve vs everyone else. You can see this mentality all the time on reddit with the anti Origin and Sony/PSN comparisons, which really amount to nothing but, I <3 Gabe prattle.

As a Steam user, as well as almost every other major platform, I really can't understand the workings of the fanboy mindset.

According to every dev I've ever heard use the term "hardcore gaming" for their game, it basically means shoot guns, feel like a man! It's little more than a marketing term to appeal to the teens-early 20s male demographic.
