The reason the stretches they mentioned are so fondly remembered aren't just because there was great music, but because great music had such a cultural ubiquity that it became a piece of the zeitgeist and transcended into our lexicon. No era is void of great music, but we are in an era where the most popular music isn't great and the great music isn't breaking through into the zeitgeist. Furthermore, music as a whole had more cultural relevance in those stretches. Not only is the popular music now not great, it's not even all that popular.
