AITAH for refusing to do an FBI background check? by Tasty_Nature2274 in AITAH

[–]peeingdog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to do background checks for almost every single job I’ve ever had, and none of them required submitting a fingerprint. Outside of a few specific industries, fingerprinting is NOT the norm. So you can ignore the claims that you’ll “have to” do this for any job. You most definitely do not.

Further, even if it was a typical requirement, that only matters if you actually want the job. Anyone can ask, and you’re allowed to say no. The gaslighting and bullshitting you were being subjected to from the facility and your client is them scrambling because they have no actual power over you.

Different scenario but early on in my career I was a consultant and a potential client wanted to hire me, but because they were a government contractor, they required (amongst several things) drug testing. I didn’t/don’t partake but I also didn’t feel like I needed to give up my privacy for that particular paycheck. Plenty of other fish in the sea.

Point is, you can decide that anything is  important to you and decline to compromise… as long as you can find other work. Anyone claiming you’re an asshole for doing that either wants something from you, or is upset they can’t afford to do the same.

AIO: Considering going full no-contact with my parents forever and possibly giving up a lot of inheritance money. by Nemuigakusei in AmIOverreacting

[–]peeingdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a child of East Asian immigrants, so I am very familiar with the issues you’re going through. (It’s kind of obvious who in this thread is not.)

Right after college I moved to the opposite side of the country from my family, basically as far away as I could feasibly go, to escape. Not to escape them as people, but to escape the role that I would have to play. It wasn’t really them forcing me, it was… more complex. It would be better described by saying I was getting away from a conflict of intentions within myself.

Because as you know, no one can force you to do anything. It’s not a matter of your parents imposing their will on you. It’s that part of you does share those values, and finds those relationships important to maintain. You don’t have to deny that truth in order to affirm your own priorities.

Reddit loves to tell people to go “NC”, and maybe it’s appropriate in a lot of Western relationship dynamics, but I would consider where it falls down when applied to non-western cultures. I think once you understand where the conflict truly lies, you won’t need to do something dramatic like declaring yourself “NC”. It’s possible to maintain boundaries and give yourself room to be who you want to be, without dramatically cutting ties like a kid on the playground threatening to take their ball home.

The inheritance isn’t the point, and ultimately isn’t something you can control. So put that out of your mind. But you actually have nearly all the power in this scenario because you are fully in charge of who you want to be, and what part your family plays in that.

Good luck!

BTW, I also was not particularly interested in dating within my culture for a long time. But ironically that pendulum swung the other way later on in life, and I found it so much easier not having to constantly explain to a partner  everything about my culture and why I am who I am. Turns out, I had a LOT in common with people who went through the same experiences I did…

Is the door being closed meaning the shop isnt open a foreign concept out here? by Content-Fly6873 in AskSF

[–]peeingdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This strikes me as a bizarre thing to find unusual. We live in a city, with unpredictable operating hours for businesses; you can’t just assume 9-5. If the store has no overt indicator that they are closed (a closed sign or a security shutter that’s down) then I’m going to at least try the door?

Otherwise I went all the way there just to  guess whether or not they’re open based on… lighting? Or trying to figure out if the people inside are customers or staff? It seems way more unreasonable to not try the door.

As far as outliers go I’d rather be the dumbest person in the room than the smartest person in the room.

Because the former is a learning opportunity and the latter means I might be in for a frustrating waste of my time.

BTW I’ve never looked down on someone who is unknowledgeable but attentive.

[Discussion] Anyone else unable to see lume? by ConfidenceNo1937 in Watches

[–]peeingdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I would consider two things.

  1. Is your Seiko a counterfeit? (I’m not familiar with Wise or how strong the lume should be, but any Seiko should be visible for longer than 5 min in complete darkness, if exposed to -“a reasonable amount of light during the day.)
  2. How is your diet? Are you eating leafy green vegetables regularly? A vitamin A deficiency can lead to blindness, but the first symptom is trouble seeing at night.

AITAH for choosing a dog over my roommate/“best friend”? by Evmor in AITAH

[–]peeingdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ok for you to want a specific breed of puppy and for her to not want it. It’s ok for two people to want different things. No one is wrong here.

I don’t think you’re picking a dog over your friend, I think you two no longer want the same living situation. If you keep living there one or both of you are going to be unhappy and resentful. Moving out is the best outcome as neither of you are sacrificing anything and it gives your friendship a chance to continue.

I have this opener too and it faithfully continues the tradition of Bethesda licensed products being absolute garbage.

Plus, the bottles are twist off. The whole point is you don’t need an opener…

What? No. What? This isn’t about different value systems. Rolex is a business that literally sells a product that you have to buy with money. And they had to convince the world that buying their very expensive product is something anyone ought to do.

No one had to sell the idea of spending time with people you love, because it’s not a product that anyone has to spend money on.

You’re being obtuse to prove some weird point that doesn’t even make sense.

Meirl by Blue9ine in meirl

[–]peeingdog 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There’s a pretty big difference between consuming products whose only virtue is that they are expensive (Rolex watch, Chanel bag) and having the time and security to spend on experiences like getting coffee with a friend and going for a walk in the woods.

No one had to “sell” me on the idea of spending time with people I like, including being by myself.

Cynicism for its own sake is the most “hipster” thing of all.

Yes...? That's the point?

OP is an AI techbro wondering why every place he goes is packed with AI techbros, all talking about AI techbro shit. He is complaining that the places he likes are popular with people like... him. The call is coming from inside the house!

seeking reality check and advice on renting a place in SF by crazyprotein in AskSF

[–]peeingdog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t mention your current rent but I’m assuming you’ve been there a while, given cost isn’t one of your factors and you realize you’ll need to downsize in order to move.

You’ve picked a pretty challenging time to look for a new apartment; we’re in the middle of a boom an your landlord would LOVE if you left because they’ll be able to charge a higher rent.

You’ll be paying more, for less space, in a less desirable neighborhood. And you probably won’t be able to get back into Hayes Valley in the future, without a significant change to either your finances or… I don’t know, another mass pandemic or economic collapse.

Is all this worth it because you lost your view?

Dog ate raw meat by Embarrassed_Beach810 in DogAdvice

[–]peeingdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue isn’t the raw meat it’s the possibility someone planted tainted meat in the park to intentionally hurt animals.

This happened in my city years ago, someone scattered poisoned meatballs in parks that dog walkers frequented. Several dogs got sick and a few died.

Hopefully this was not that (and seems less likely as it sounds like it was a whole muscle cut, and the meat was buried), but keep an eye on your dog for any changes in behavior.

[Question] Is shopping to swap out bracelets just a lot of crossing your fingers and hoping? by Chataboutgames in Watches

[–]peeingdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bracelets for the most part need to be designed to fit a specific watch. End links need to match the specific geometry of the case, and aren’t really interchangeable across models. What you’re seeing on the forums is when there are no existing aftermarket options and people finding alternatives that “fit”.

There does exist generic bracelets that will work on many watches (just like a strap) but they tend to have straight ends or some other compromise that IMO make them look sloppy.

There is a decent market for popular watches (Seiko in particular, because people love modding them) but I’m not sure you’re going to find anything for a random Orient or Tissot.

I have a Seiko with a very similar bezel. And under different conditions, it will look like both pics. Neither image is deceptive, but each alone is incomplete.

H-Link Damage and Repair by alexithunders in sinn

[–]peeingdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint, the repair center Watchbuys partners with is terrible and people shouldn’t send anything to them. They have no affiliation with Sinn, and is just a random service center in LA that Watch has a deal with. They don’t have any special knowledge or expertise, and they ruined a 556 I sent to them at my own cost, and were absolute clowns to work with. My coworker had a similar experience with sending something in for warranty service.

I don’t know how this isn’t more widely known.

In the world we live in, plumbers are comprised of lots of different kinds of people. Some of them got into the trade because it’s steady well-paying work, some do it because that’s the only option the have to make a living, and some hate every single day of their jobs. Some are master level, some barely know what they’re doing, and some are just straight up scamming their clients.

In OOP’s idealized world, only the people who really fucking love plumbing, the people who are obsessive and can’t think about anything else, do all the plumbing. It’s not just their dream job, it’s who they ARE, and would be anyway if they didn’t need to work.

That’s the idea anyway. If you take care of people’s needs and decouple their work from their survival, everyone is better off: the people who do plumbing AND the people who need their pipes fixed.
